Good samples of SoP for EM and Fulbright scholarship

Thời gian gần đây mình có nhận được khá nhiều email hỏi kinh nghiệm về việc apply học bổng trong đó phần lớn các email đều hỏi xin Statement of Purpose - SOP. Trên diễn đàn mình thấy có khá nhiều bạn đã chia sẻ các kinh nghiệm xin học bổng tuy nhiên chia sẻ quá trình viết SOP chưa nhiều, mà đây lại là 1 trong những yếu tố quan trọng của quá trình apply. Nhân tiện hôm nay mình "dọn dẹp" USP tìm lại được bản final của mấy hồ sơ xin học bổng, mình copy lại ra đây để chia sẻ với mọi người. Mình lập topic mới, hy vọng các EMer, Fulbrighter ... cùng vào đây chia sẻ. Nếu có topic nào đã trùng lặp thì mod chuyển giúp mình. Lưu ý mình chỉ chia sẻ về học bổng Erasmus Mundus và Fulbright là 2 học bổng mình đã apply thành công, các học bổng khác có thể có các yêu cầu cụ thể riêng, các bạn nên tìm hiểu kĩ.

1. Học bổng Erasmus Mundus - EM

Học bổng EM thường yêu cầu bạn viết 1 bản Statement of Purpose hoặc Letter of Motivation. Theo kinh nghiệm của cá nhân mình, cả 2 dạng essay trên đều có nội dung giống nhau, để trả lời cho các câu hỏi WHY - Tại sao bạn muốn đi học, What- học khoá này sẽ đem lại cho bạn điều gì, How- Bạn sẽ ứng dụng những điều bạn học được như thế nào. Trong khi viết bạn cũng cần thể hiện bạn là người PHÙ HỢP với khoá học. Sự phù hợp có thể thể hiện ở Kinh nghiệm làm việc, khoá học Đại học có liên quan, hay những đam mê, sở thích mà bạn có.

Về format, Letter of Motivation cần viết dưới dạng 1 bức thư (tất nhiên)! Có mở thư, kết thư cẩn thận.

Dưới đây, tớ post lại Letter of Motivation cho khoá Communication, Media & Cultural Studies. Rất tiếc là khoá này đã close, tuy nhiên các bạn có thể tham khảo cho quá trình apply các course khác!

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my interest in your European Master of Arts in Media, Communication and Cultural Studies programme and would like to explain my motivation in a few words for your consideration on granting me the admission and scholarships.

As you can see from my enclosed CV, one of my most distinctive characteristics is the diversity of experiences I possess. Graduated from Hanoi Foreign Trade University, I have had one year working for a multi-national company and then more than three years working as founder and coordinator of GreenZoom ?" an organisation focusing on the field of Culture and Communication for Community Development. My initiative is launched from a firm belief that a group of young people can make real change to their community by using various methods of communication in development projects. With the spirit of Sharing & Creating, GreenZoom strives to build a Vietnamese community of creative, intellectual and responsible young people aiming to preserve the country?Ts diverse culture and tra***ions, promote cultural exchanges and contribute passionately to the progress of society. During the last three years, GreenZoom has achieved great attention through various development projects, creative workshops and community exhibitions.

As part of my personal and professional development, I had chance to attend various cultural and social exchange programmes and international conferences from Asia to Europe, Latin Amerian, Africa where I once again appreciated the beauty of cultural diversity, the necessity of enhancing and deepening the understanding of country?Ts unique cultural identity and heritage, the importance of developing multimodal communication for development. I think that it has been these experiences that have shaped the person I am today.

As having set my long-term career in cultural studies and communication, I am motivated to work as an active young activist preserving and promoting my homeland?Ts culture as well as making a difference for better futures of community development in Vietnam by applying various ways of communication and media. After three years working in practice and pursuing professional interest in communication, I realized that I am in need of developing my understanding of both theoretical and practical issues relating to the mass media, culture and the new technologies. Now it is high time for me to work out a master plan which I believe would help me bring greater contributions to my organisation particularly and the prosperity of my country generally.

Looking for a name from a large pool of different programmes, I chose The Erasmus Mundus MA in Media, Communication and Cultural Studies for its unique, interdisciplinary and inter-university features which enable students to attend courses at two universities in different countries.
Firstly, considering that the focus of the programme is on Media, Culture, and Communication, taking this course will help me explore the most recent developments of multimodal communication as well as extend skills of multimedia production. Within the course?Ts duration, I will be equipped with numerous approaches and applications and given opportunities to design, produce and analyse media messages in a variety of contexts. From what I have found out at the Comundus website as well as via correspondence with programme?Ts professors, I believe the combined skills and knowledge the course offer will give me valuable resources to take home and contribute for my own organization growth. Therefore I consider this Master program a stepping stone to my future career success.
Secondly, the Master?Ts program offered by a consortium of leading European higher education institutions would give me the possibility to learn with famous scholars and excellent students and at the same time, gain precious experience with other perspectives and cultural practices. As communication and culture strike me as one of the most exciting areas of research today, I appreciate the chance to broaden my network, meeting and exchanging views with peers from around the world. Besides, being familiar with living and working in a multicultural international surroundings, I am eager to quickly adapt to new environment, to accept and appreciate differences, to learn from others and easily get connected in a network.

Thirdly, having a passion for traveling and understanding different cultures of the world, I do hope that, through this master course, I am able me to get an in-depth understanding and real experience of European society where beholds the vibrant cultural and historical significance as the epicenter of civilization. I have come to Europe one year ago as a visitor, this year I hope to come back as a student.

In conclusion, ?olearning, sharing, networking, and leading?-those are four elements that I would like to apply for Media, Communication and Cultural Studies Master course . Upon return to Vietnam on completion of my study, I strongly believe that the advanced knowledge and skills I have will affirm me for better contributions to my organisation particularly and my country generally.
I well understand the great pressure and challenges that will be presented to me when studying in such a distinguished program as yours; but given a chance, I am determined to overcome any obstacles to achieve my goals.

Khi apply học bổng Fulbright, ngoài việc phải viết SOP, bạn còn phải viết Study / Research Objectives. Study / Research Objectives trả lời cụ thể cho câu hỏi What - Bạn muốn học cái gì, kế hoạch học tập, nghiên cứu của bạn.
Bạn sẽ nhận thấy là có 1 vài điểm trong Study / Research Objectives có thể đã nhắc tới trong SOP tuy nhiên khi viết Study / Research Objectives thì phải sâu hơn và cụ thể hơn!

During the last three years, I have been working as coordinator for GreenZoom community development organisation. This opportunity had provided me with the practice in the field of social development, which I decided to pursue as a lifelong career. After three years working in Vietnam, I realized that now I am in need of developing my understanding of both theoretical and practical issues relating to this field. Thus, I would like to take a Master course in the US in social development in order to be equipped with advanced knowledge and analytical tools that make me qualified for my future success.
The very first objective of my academic endeavor in the United States is to master innovative research and pedagogical methods in social development. Taking a course in this field will get me solid and multidisciplinary understanding of development and its functional dimensions. Through the core curriculum, I aim at deepening my understanding of social and community development theory and practice, social policy in development, program management and evaluation and specialised studies in international as well as community development. This may include brief history of community development; the changing nature of community work, the concepts of culture in relation to community work in developing societies, and the dynamics of communication, including cross cultural communication, working with interpreters, human rights documentation and advocacy?In which I plan to specialize deeply in Communication for Development; to understand and critically assess the role of communication for and in development projects.
By the end of the course, my expected outcomes are to master different ideological approaches to community work; explore analysis of the impacts and outcomes that these approaches might have on communities and examine alternative models of research, consultation and needs analysis, planning and sustainable service delivery in order to address changing and emerging needs in the field. Specifically, regarding communication for development as the focus of my master study, I expect to get broad knowledge of different theories and current research in communication and development, and in-depth understanding of the integration of both tra***ions and their practical application.
Considering the fact that community development is still in early stage of development in Vietnam and lack of national professionals often means more difficulties for development projects in the country, it is obvious that the combined skills and knowledge the course offers will give me valuable resources to take home and contribute for my own organization growth.
Secondly, within the course?Ts duration, I target to make a penetrative study of examples of successes and challenges in community development being faced today in Asia, Africa, Europe, and America. I hope to develop my professional skills, experience and contacts through practical training, field projects, internship applying and evaluating methods and models of development. During my sencond year in the US, I plan to enrich my experience by taking an internship in an American development agency if possible. These critical academic and practical skills will enable me and other Vietnamese colleagues with whom I will share my knowledge upon return home to gain renewed strength and insight in understanding the nature of community development in both international and national context.
Thirdly, I would like to go to the US to experience learning with well-known scholars and excellent students and at the same time, gaining precious experience with other perspectives and cultural practices. I also appreciate the chance to broaden my network, meeting and exchanging views with professors and peers from around the world. Being familiar with living and working in a multicultural international surroundings, I am eager to quickly adapt to new environment, to accept and appreciate differences, to learn from others and easily get connected in a network. I personally think that these kinds of connection serve as a very helpful channel for the exchange of viewpoints, knowledge and experience sharing, consultancy and cooperation in large-scale projects.
On completion of my study, I am going to continue my career in community development, to combine theory and practice and apply international experiences in the field. The knowledge and skills that I gain from the course are essential for field practitioner in developing country like me in order to provide more effective assistance to local counterparts and communities in planning, implementing and evaluating development programs.
I know that there is a long road to travel before achieving my goal and there are so many things out there for me to learn as entering the field of Development. Therefore, I strongly believe a Master course in the US will affirm me for better contributions to my organisation particularly and my country generally.

Mình sẵn sàng giúp tư vấn cho các bạn trong quá trình apply học bổng (đặc biệt với hai học bổng mình nắm khá rõ là EM và Fulbright), hoặc nếu bạn muốn comment về SOP, Study Objectives.... Tuy nhiên mình lưu ý là trước hết bạn phải chuẩn bị cẩn thận, hiểu rõ yêu cầu của học bổng mà bạn apply, đọc hết các thông tin trên website. Mình sẽ không thể trả lời các câu hỏi chung chung như "làm thế nào để được học bổng?"; "viết SOP thế nào cho tốt???".
Lời khuyên là nếu có điểm gì bạn chưa hiểu sau khi đã đọc kĩ các thông tin, hãy viết thư thẳng cho Contact Person trên website của học bổng đó.
Các bạn cần tư vấn có thể gửi email cho mình về địa chỉ duongnt.gz@gmail.com (Thư gửi có tiêu đề, họ tên và nội dung cụ thể).
Thời gian để apply các học bổng chắc còn dài. Mình chuẩn bị hồ sơ chưa đến 2 tuần đã xong rồi, Fulbright chỉ mất có 2 ngày thôi. Thế nên các bạn cứ yên tâm chuẩn bị 1 hồ sơ tốt nhất có thể nhé!

Hoan nghênh ý tưởng và sự chia sẻ của mellypink. Mình nghĩ rằng bác Mod nên thống nhất mở các threat tham khảo những bài đã thành công trong việc apply học bổng của các thế hệ đi trước như sau:
- Mô tả con đường mà mỗi người xin được học bổng (chia sẻ kiểu như mục Đôi điều Tản mạn í)
- Personal Statement hay Statement of Purpose (SOP) hay Motivation Letter;
- Letter of Reference (LOR);
- Research/Study Plan, Research/Study Objectives;
Còn mục nào nữa quan trọng thì mọi người bổ sung nhé. Hi vọng rằng box Du học của chúng ta sẻ có đầy đủ các thông tin để mọi người tham khảo. Biết đâu ngày nào đó chúng ta viết được cả sách để bán ra thị trường nhỉ?

Đã Vote, xong thấy vẫn cần phải nói cám ơn. Mặc dù mình chưa dự định làm hồ sơ nhưng mình nghĩ sễ kinh nghiệm của bạn sẽ rất có ích cho những người đang cần. Không nhiều ngưòi đã thi đỗ còn quay lại sẵn sàng giúp đỡ người khác như bạn. Chúc bạn thành công.

cám ơn chị Mellypink lắm lắm, ước gì biết chị sớm hơn từ hồi t7 í, để em nhờ chị ngắm ngía giùm em cái Endevour. Anyway, neu fail, e lai bước tiếp chặng đường và nhờ vả chị. Những SOP này rất co ích cho bọn em hoc hỏi, trước đây em search được vài cái cua bọn CHina thui, chả co SOP cua anh chị nào để xem mô tê thế nào...
