    New Zealand ASEAN Scholars Awards

    Vietnam Country Portfolio

    Background

New Zealand is a long-standing partner of ASEAN and the New Zealand ASEAN Scholars
awards is an initiative which will contribute to the commitments made in the Joint Declaration for
ASEAN-New Zealand Comprehensive Partnership (JCP) 2010-2015. The JCP aims to
strengthen New Zealand’s relationship with ASEAN and support the Initiative for ASEAN
Integration to close the development gap for the developing member states.

The New Zealand ASEAN Scholars awards are part of the New Zealand’s official development
assistance to the ASEAN region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, through the New
Zealand Aid Programme, delivers this scholarship scheme.

New Zealand ASEAN Scholars awards empower future leaders with the knowledge, skills and
qualifications to make key contributions to economic, social and political development within
ASEAN nations. 170 New Zealand ASEAN Scholars awards are allocated for eligible students
from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam to undertake post-
graduate study at a tertiary institution in New Zealand.

    Type and Number of Scholarships
The New Zealand ASEAN Scholars awards are for full-time postgraduate level study, i.e.

allocation of 30 scholarships is made available for Vietnamese nationals who wish to obtain a
postgraduate degree in New Zealand commencing 2012.

Successful applicants are entitled to return air travel, full tuition fees, an establishment
allowance upon arrival in New Zealand, a living allowance to cover day to day costs and
    medical and travel insurance.

    English Language Requirements

New Zealand tertiary education institutions set their own admission requirements for English
language proficiency. All applicants should check the IELTS1
    or TOEFL2
    score required for
admission to the New Zealand education institution that they have applied to.
    3

    Fields of Study

Applicants from all fields are encouraged to apply. The suggested disciplines are as follows:

    1
International English Language Testing System – academic stream
    2
As a general guideline, most New Zealand education institutions require a TOEFL score of 575 with
a TWE of 5; or 250 on the computer-based test; or 90 on the internet-based test with a writing score
of 20. Some institutions may require a higher or lower score.
    3
As a general guideline, most New Zealand education institutions require a minimum IELTS3
    score
of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, for postgraduate level study. Some postgraduate qualifications

Good luck.
