Description and useful information IMT Institute for Advanced Studies Lucca is an international Graduate School and Institute of Technology instituted with the aim of forming highly-skilled human capital – in specific regards to its PhD programs- in disciplines characterized by their applicative potential in areas like social sciences, economics, management, informatics and cultural heritage.

COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING: The Doctoral Program aims at preparing researchers and professionals with a wide knowledge of the foundations of informatics. It seeks to explore applications to a variety of systems that are changing the perspective of other existing technological applications and that are target of very active research in the international scene. The research activity focuses on key aspects of these systems, such as open-endedness, autonomy, resource sharing, security, and concurrency.


ECONOMICS, MARKETS, INSTITUTIONS: The program seeks to deal with issues in political economy, applied public economics, the functioning of industries and markets, the impact of macroeconomics on productivity and growth.


A distinctive feature of the Ph.D. program is the integration of theoretical, technical, and practical expertise, aimed at educating highly qualified professionals, who analyze, plan, and manage concrete interventions of political economy.


Theoretical methodologies and models are generated and tested, through the systematic investigation of the real world, with a distinctive focus on concrete observation of markets and their actors. At the end of the program, students are able to identify commonalities as well as distinctive characters of economies, markets, and industries.


MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURAL HERITAGE: Programma in collaborazione con il Politecnico di Torino


The Program aims at formalizing in a consistent multidisciplinary course, the specific know-hows needed by researchers and professionals operating at the highest levels of management of culture. The PhD course focuses on the following disciplines: History and Art History; Economics and Management of immaterial goods; Legislation on Cultural Heritage; Technology. Doctoral students will also be given elements of physics and chemistry, strictly related to the field of conservation and analysis of materials. The PhD program integrates a theoretical approach with technical and practical ones, in order to educate both highly qualified professionals operating in the concrete field of cultural policy and researchers who will be active in the field of cultural heritage.


POLITICAL SYSTEMS AND INSTITUTIONAL CHANGE: The PhD in Political Systems and Institutional Change is a multidisciplinary course which analyses, in a comparative perspective, institutions and their historical, political, sociological, legal and economic features. Special attention will be devoted to processes of institutional change. The PhD aims at forming political analysts able to: plan and manage collaborative and integrated processes at the international level; analyse and assess policies and institutional settings at a supranational, national and regional level; confront the specific problems of countries in transition towards democracy and a market economy.

Scholarships: 24 scholarships, 6 for each PhD program, will be awarded, and are equal to about € 13.638 per year for each winner + 3 additional scholarships financed by the European Union through the European Social Fund, by the Minister of Labor, Health and Social Politics and by the Region of Tuscany (one for the Economics, Markets, and Institutions program and two for the Management of Cultural Heritage program) All admitted candidates are provided free meals (lunch and dinner). 11 FEM Fellowships starting on Spring 2011 , Italy

FEM – Research and Innovation Centre welcomes applications for 3-years research fellowships *****pport brilliant and highly motivated students to get the PhD title in the fields covered by the Centre.
We welcome applications from students of all countries. The official language of the programme is English. Applications can be sent from 13 September 2010.
General information
Eleven (11) scholarships are available for PhD research in the fields covered by the strategic research areas of our Centre: Environment and Natural Resources Area , Food Quality and Nutrition Area, Genomics and Crop Biology Area. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their curriculum and of the letter(s) of references. Referee forms sent by the applicants will not be considered.
The grant is for three years and the expected start is February 2011 (Spring 2011 at the latest). The gross salary is 20.000 Euros per year. Students will also benefit of funding for travelling to our projects’ partner institutions as the projects include a minimum period of 6-months-stay at the institution co-responsible for the single PhD project.
There is a general empowerment of the student choice when applying to our PhD research projects. Candidates can postulate for one to three specific projects (see list).
Selected candidates are awarded a 3-years fellowship. The scholarship can be additionally extended for up to 1 year, pending the approval of the FEM PhD Fellowships Committee.
Please note that the CRI issues a specific certificate of attendance, but candidates are asked to register at the doctoral school of the University partner of the project or of another University, in order to get the conferral of the PhD degree. The selected candidate has 1 year time from the start of the contract to register at the University doctoral school. If the candidate fails to register within the first year, the scholarship will be interrupted.

Candidates are sought who possess a Master's degree in Engineering or Computer Science, with a strong background in Robotics Manipulation, and an interest in undertaking innovative, ambitious, high-risk/high-payoff research enterprises. The cosmopolitan research environment requires mastering the English language in both speaking and writing. Gradually acquiring the basics of the Italian language will make the experience of living in Italy more enjoyable, but is not required.

Documents described in point 1) must be attached to the online form through the online procedure. Candidates who do not attach the required documents will be excluded from the procedure.
The abovementioned certificates and documents in foreign languages (except for English and French) must be translated and sworn by the appropriate diplomatic authorities or Italian consulates abroad, and must conform to the current legislation in the country of origin.
If it is not possible to provide the /dichiarazione di valore/ (statement of value) , at the time of application, candidates must follow the procedure set out above, attaching a personal declaration duly signed, by which they undertakes to provide the requested documents as soon as possible (see Enclosure B). Minimum-time functions (Reference: ESR4)

• Description of the subject: In the theory of partial differential equations of Hamilton-Jacobi type arising in Optimal Control, semiconcavity can be expected to hold for some classes of viscosity solutions or value functions, under certain assumptions such as convexity and coercivity of the Hamiltonian or a strong type of con*****ability. Semicon**** functions are known to have several significant regularity properties, such as the almost everywhere twice differentiability and the availability of precise estimates on the set of nondifferentiability points. Such properties are inherited from analogous properties of convex functions. The semiconcavity of a function may be seen as the combination of two distinct properties: 1) local Lipschitz continuity and 2) a kind of external sphere condition on the hypograph, which we call in the sequel proximal smoothness. Property 1) is a consequence of the coercivity/con*****ability, while 2) is associated with the structure of the problem. For minimum time problems, 2) is implied by a certain interplay between the con*****ed dynamics and the target.

In this project area, we shall investigate regularity properties of the value function for minimum time problems, and solutions of related partial differential equations. We shall, in particular, examine whether proximal smoothness of the epi/hypograph of value functions or of viscosity solutions holds, under conditions which do not imply the Lipschitz continuity of these functions. It is likely that such investigations will require consideration of higher order con*****ability conditions, in the spirit of the Kalman Rank Condition or of Chow’s theorem.

Numerical schemes for Hamilton-Jacobi equations (Reference ESR5)

Description of the subject: A major difficulty in solving Hamilton-Jacobi equations is the high computational cost involved, when the state dimension is large. Hamilton-Jacobi approaches are seldom used in the practical applications, even though this method has the great advantage of providing global optima. When the value function is continuous, several numerical schemes are available for the solution of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, including Semi-Lagrangian, Markov Chain, ENO and WENO schemes. These schemes are known to be inefficient for the approximation of discontinuous solutions, however; there are only a few proposed techniques for dealing with numerical schemes in this case. The aim of the project area is to bring together four teams in the network (Rome, UBT, UPMC and Inria) to share their expertise concerning the numerical solution of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. The teams will develop algorithms, and supporting analysis, for problems where the solution is possibly discontinuous. They will also synthesize the latest advances in scientific calculus, to improving existing numerical methods for the continuous case.

• Semi-Lagrangian methods (SL) / Fast Marching Methods (FMM)

SL schemes are based on the coupling between an integration method for ordinary differential equations and an interpolation technique which makes it possible to compute the value at the foot of the up-wind characteristic. In order to deal with high-order methods and discontinuous solutions, we plan to use advanced interpolation techniques (ENO, WENO, ...) balancing the relative errors in the above two steps of the discretization. Also, an analysis of time-space adaptive schemes for first and second order Hamilton-Jacobi equations and the corresponding a-posteriori estimates will help to reduce the number of unknowns in the discrete problem, while retaining adequate accuracy of approximation.

• Antidiffusive methods.

Classical monotone schemes have convergence properties but their drawback is that they are diffusive. They are therefore not suitable for computing discontinuous solutions or for application to problems involving long-time evolutions. Recently, some antidiffusive methods have been introduced, using ideas coming from schemes for conservation laws. Very sharp antidiffusive behavior has been established numerically. A rigorous convergence proof is available, however, only in very particular cases. These methods are still in an early stage of development and carrying out a general and rigorous analysis is a challenging research area.
