1. Indefinite Pronouns as Subjects
1.1. Singular Indefinite Pronoun Subjects take SINGULAR verbs
(each, either, neither, one, no one, nobody, nothing, anyone, anybody, anything, someone, somebody, something, everyone, everybody, everything)
eg: Each does a great deal of work around the office.
1.2. Plural Indefinite Pronoun Subjects take PLURAL verbs
(several, few, both, many)
eg: Both do a great deal of work around the office.
1.3. Some indefinite pronouns can take either Singular or Plural verbs
(some, any, none, all, most)
eg: Some of the sugar is on the floor. (sugar is uncountable --> verb is Singular)
eg: Some of the books are on the floor. (books are countable --> verb is Plural)
2. Compound subjects joined by ''AND'' are always Plural
eg: A pencil and an eraser MAKE writing easier.
3. With compound subjects joined by ''OR / NOR'', the verb agrees with the subject NEARER to it
eg: Neither the President nor the Senators HAVE found a solution.
4. Collective nouns (eg: group, family, jury, crowd, team, ...) can take Singular or Plural verbs, depending on meaning
eg: - The jury HAS awarded custody to the grandmother.
- The jury (members) HAVE been arguing for five days.
5. Titles of single entities (eg: books, magazines, countries, ...) always take SINGULAR verbs
eg: The Grapes of Wrath TAKES a long time to read.
6. Plural Form Subjects
6.1. Plural form subjects with a singular meaning take a SINGULAR verb (eg: news, mumps, physics, mathematics,...)
eg: Mumps is a contagious disease.
6.2. Plural form subjects with singular or plural meaning take a singular OR plural verb, depending on meaning
eg: - Politics IS an intersting topic. (--> politics is SINGULAR)
- The politics of the situation WERE complicated. (--> politics is PLURAL = the many aspects of the situation)
6.3. Plural form subjects with a plural meaning take a plural verb (eg: trousers, scissors, jeans,...)
