Steel Wall – American Tank Destroyers!

    16 March 2011
Battle actions on the fields of Europe in the beginning of the WWII, so-called “Blitzkrieg” period, and really tremendous success of the German tank troops clearly demonstrated to the U.S. military command that the role of tanks was underestimated in the pre-war period. Moreover, the fact that U.S. Army had no tanks and anti-tank weaponry was evident. No, I don’t want to say that there was no antitank weapon at all, U.S. Army was armed with antitank guns (and these guns were not worse than in other countries). But the quantity was really insufficient and they were dispersed to infantry units. There were no specialized anti-tank units in the U.S. Army at that time.
The building of the first experimental anti-tank forces launched in 1941. Based on ideas of general McNair (it is strange that it was based on his ideas – such forces were formed in European armies and proved their effectiveness in the first period of WWII), who considered that creating of a highly-mobile and well armor-protected self-propelled artillery was preferable for antitank actions than tanks themselves. And it was not for nothing that the phrase “Seek-Strike-Destroy” became unofficial motto of tank destroyers. General McNair’s doctrine also had certain advantages – it did not require changes in the structure, tactics and equipping of the existing Army (I’d say bright-n-cheap idea). Anti-tank units supposed to be deployed to the most dangerous armored approach routes, prevent tank breakthrough, creating a powerful anti-tank defense by concentration of anti-tank weapons. Considering the German strategy of mobile armored attacks, this tactics was more effective than tra***ional anti-tank defenses.
    ***
But this had raised the question of appropriate vehicles creation. These vehicles supposed to have powerful weapons, capable to destroy all types of enemy tanks, and have proper strategic and tactical mobility. The works had been deployed in several directions. World of Tanks new American tank destroyers (TD) tree represents the projects of tank destroyers developed on base of track chassis.
From October 1941 till May 1942 the works on creation of tank destroyers on the chassis of M3 “Stuart” light tank and M3 ”Lee” medium tank were carried out. The projects were given the resignation T18 and T24.
    ***

T18 was originally designed as a self-propelled gun of infantry support. It was armed with 75-mm Howitzer installed in a spacious, fully enclosed armored hull. The development was started in October 1941 and finished in May 1942. The project was abandoned because of the emergence of more advanced M8. While speaking about battle service on the fields of World of Tanks we should mention that T18 will be a worthy representative of the second level tank destroyers, despite it was developed on the chassis of M3 “Stuart”. First of all, T18 is a closed-type tank destroyer and its armor plating will make it really hard nut to crack. But, as it always happens, everything has the opposite side of the coin – the weight of the armor plating will affect the speed characteristics and maneuverability of this tank destroyer. The types of the mounted weapon will also be an important factor in choosing the tactics used in battles.

    ***
As for T24, it was an anti-aircraft gun M3 mounted in a hull with open top. For this purpose was used the chassis of medium tank M3 “Lee”. After the construction of several prototypes (including the prototype with anti-aircraft gun M1918) the project was closed in April 1942. The reasons for the project closure were unsatisfactory characteristics of mobility and, in ad***ion to that, the project had no rotating turret (although standard tank destroyers of this period has no rotating turret at all).
    ***
Right after these two projects the development of two more was started: T82 and T40. These projects were, in fact, a continuation of its predecessors.
    ***
T82 was designed on the base of M5A1 tank chassis (the development of M3 “Stuart”). It was armed with 105-mm light Howitzer M3A1 mounted in lightly armored hull with open top.
By August 15, 1944 two prototypes of T82 were complete, but the lack of interest on the part of the U.S. Army led to the cancellation of the project on June 21, 1945 (the best time to lose interest is the end of war). And now about T82 in World of Tanks – this self-propelled anti-tank vehicle of the third level is direct opposite of his predecessor. The hull with open top will significally increase the view range. Developed on base of M5A1 and lightly armored (what should sound like a death sentence), this vehicle will have high speed characteristics and a chance to get out of enemy fire. The type of weapon mounted on vehicle will determine the tactics of battle and vice versa. The use of heavy weaponry in conjunction with speed characteristics will allow you to appear in right place in appropriate moment and seriously damage the enemy with close-in fire – this tactics is very risky due to lack of armor protection, but very effective, as it will allow you to destroy the enemy combat unit with a single shot. If you’re not a “DESPERADO” and not used to risky actions attacking the enemy at short range and advantageous angle, while enemy shells whistling near – “bush-ambush” tactics is your choice. Yes, this tank destroyer can be used in this role too. You just need to mount anti-tank gun of small caliber, but high armor-piercing capacity. The damage is not as significant, but this tactics is more secure. So, shoot from long distances, if our position was spotted – quickly change the position. But remember the main thing – this tank destroyer is incredibly allergic to the pieces of metal flying at high speed, so you’d better avoid a meeting with them in all possible ways.

    ***
T40, in its turn, was a kind of follow-on version of its predecessor. The gun was mounted in the hull with open top, as in T24, but set lower (deeper in hull), thus improved the protection of the crew (but the word “improved” is not exactly the match – this improvement allowed to protect the crew somehow). However, we cannot speak categorically about its battle qualities and participation of these vehicles in the game. This tank destroyers have no obvious advantages over the same level vehicles of other nations but better view range and a bit better armor plating (particularly the bottom of the front armor plating became legendary among our players). But the open top of the hull makes the crew almost unprotected from artillery shots, and high silhouette makes the vehicle more visible. This aspect is really big disadvantage while using the tactics of ambushing. Not OUTSTANDING characteristics of maneuverability and speed minimize the chances to leave the battle “ASAP “, if the situation not in your favor. Types of weaponry available for mounting will allow it to destroy all the types of targets (all those crawling “metal-boxes” with guns) as for the tank destroyers of USSR and Germany of the same level. Preferable types of tactics to use are ambushing and conduction of distant battles from cover positions, as for the tank destroyers of other nations. However, you must also remember that the stealth characteristics are much to be desired, and speed-and-maneuverability characteristics of your vehicle will not let you leave the battlefield in a convenient moment.

    ***
The experience of the successful 105-mm howitzer mounting on tank chassis in April 1942 (our old friend “General Lee”) persuaded the top of the U.S. Army of the need for placement the gun with high muzzle velocity on the same chassis. It was decided to use the chassis of M4A2 medium tank of the early series. 76-mm cannon on the basis of anti-aircraft gun of the same caliber mounted in a turret, which in its turn borrowed from a heavy tank T1 (also known as M6), and the whole project was designated T35 (here we can compare it with LEGO). But U.S. Army commission decided to go the other way – at its request the height of the hull was reduced and armor plating was mounted at higher angles of inclination. After new faceted turret was mounted the name of the vehicle was completely changed into T35E1 and after it passed into service it was designated into T10. According to the documents, serial production of M10 “Wolverine” began in September 1942. The M10 vehicles you will face on the battlefields of World of Tanks will have high mobility characteristics and armor plating for the vehicles of its level (for example, its German opponent StuG III has significantly thicker armor plating). Rotating turret will be a great advantage as if your trucks are torn that will not mean that you turn into a helpless target and the enemy can shoot with impunity in your sides or your back. Another big advantage of this vehicle is really powerful top cannon that can pierce the armor of armored vehicles of higher levels. This cannon requires the mounting of the turret with a larger counterweight. In fact, Wolverine will get the cannon at level higher than its opponents – tank destroyers of other nations. And again – larger range of view as an advantage of the turret with open top. As for disadvantages, here we can mention the turret with its open top once again, that makes the crew more vulnerable and the height of the vehicle that significally reduces the stealth characteristics. However, we think that the advantages of this tank destroyer reduce all its disadvantages in full amount. All the types of combat tactics fit this tank destroyer: direct support of tanks on the battlefield, using it as an offensive weapon apart from tanks, firing from cover at long range, as well as the tactics of tank ambushes, taking into account the stealth characteristics. Rotating turret is quite indispensible in urban battles. We can speak with all confidence about the universality of this vehicle.

It should be mentioned that in October 1942 when it was decided to redesign the 90-mm anti-aircraft gun in an anti-tank gun (following the Germans experience of their 88-mm remakes). And somewhere in the beginning of 1943, M10 “Wolverine” tank destroyer was equipped with this cannon as an experimental vehicle. But it was too long and too heavy for the existing turret (a small miscalculation). In the spring of 1943 a modified version of the T71 with a new turret was presented. The demonstration was so successful that soon was signed up a contract for 500 units. In June 1944 it was accepted into service under the designation M36 “Slugger” or “Jackson”. While speaking about in-game characteristics of this tank destroyer we can compare it with M10 “Wolverine” with ease. The same advantages along with more powerful armor plating and weaponry able to hit almost all types of armored targets, makes this tank destroyer a very dangerous opponent. One of the worth noting innovations is the possibility to mount a turret with closed top. It will allow to gain better protection of the crew. Of course it will reduce the view range. If we compare “Slugger” with the tanks of the same level, we can point out a bit worse armor plating, but better stealth characteristics. Methods of the tactical deployment are also flexible as for his predecessor. That makes this battle vehicle indispensable in tank support, and quite viable in a single-use and in fight one on one.

T28 and its improved version T95 – both vehicles are prototypes of super heavy self-propelled artillery systems. They belong to the class of tank destroyers armed with 105-mm T1 cannon and frontal 305-mm armor plating. This vehicle is quite often referred *****per-heavy tanks. Works on this project were conducted from September 1943, but had not been completed by the end of the WWII. As a result – its production was limited to two prototypes completed in December 1945 and January 1946. T28/T95 is the second vehicle in weight after super-heavy “Maus” tank. It could be a very long story if we start to talk about its creation, you’d better see it with your own eyes – you will understand everything without technical descriptions (well, it is REALLY HEAVY vehicle). T28 and T29 are vehicles of the VIII and IX level as well. First of all, a few words about T28. This vehicle will have incredibly powerful front armor plating. It is almost invulnerable to frontal attacks. Moreover, in comparison with vehicles of the same class it will have well armored sides too. This tank destroyer will be really “tough nut to crack”. But everything has its price – T28 will have low characteristics of mobility and passing ability. As you understand, there is no reason to talk about its maneuverability characteristics, as we have nothing to discuss. Various types of weaponry available for mounting on this steel giant will be able to destroy almost all types of armored vehicles represented in game. Its characteristics will influence the tactics of playing. T28 will be the perfect vehicle for direct heavy tank support on the battlefield and for operating in battle formations. But do not think that this vehicle is invulnerable – a single T28 or left without support becomes an easy target for “big guns” of the enemy tanks and tank destroyers due to its size. And this is a real “PRESENT” for the enemy artillery units. Shoot down the tracks, immobilize it and do not get into the fire area of T28 gun – main methods to destroy this steel monster. But before that you should cut it off from the main forces or destroy its covering vehicles.
And all mentioned above is applied to T95 in the same way. Doubled tracks will provide it with the best passing ability in comparison with T28, but T28 will be more convenient to shoot at (and its tracks too). Ad***ional armor plating of the T95 sides and its large angles will make the difficult task of hitting the side of T95 even more difficult if not impossible at all. Mounted top level gun will not leave a chance to rescue to no “lucky” armored vehicle who get into the crosshairs of T95. This steel monster can be compared only with the legendary “Maus” and arouse fear with its presence on the battlefield.

*****m up all the information described above one can say that the forthcoming American tank destroyer tree will bring a lot of new tactical, balance and fun features in the game. Considered to be the only true for tank destroyers the tactics of tank ambushes and long range fire from cover will retain its relevance. But American tank destroyers will bring new tactics such as direct support of tanks in combat (or at least will make this tactics more popular). Rotating turrets will allow players to use them apart from combat orders and as offensive weapon. It is also hard to overestimate the positive qualities of rotating turrets along with deadly anti-tank guns in urban battles, where tank destroyers of classical layout face great difficulties in taking the fire-position and maneuvering. High silhouettes of American armed vehicles will force all players to use “in-cover” tactics less than before that. That will make World of Tanks more dynamic and entertaining.
