Writing task 2: What are the key problems facing the world’s cities in the 21st century and what can be done for them?

Along with the development of society in the 21st century, more and more problems are brought to our attention, one of which is that the world’s cities in the attempt of enhancing their dweller’s living standard have been facing a plenty of issues. As the matter of fact, the most devil ones are probably urbanization and environmental pollution.
There are numerous reasons why I hold this view, and I would explore a few of the most important ones here. The first problem that I have just mentioned above is urbanization or urban drift, means, the physical growth of urban areas as a result of global change. These days, people move into cities due to the improving opportunities for jobs, education, housing, transportation and so forth. Following the advantages of individuals, the cities itself have been facing many disadvantages. The quality of life, for instance, could not be better as the increase dramatically in the need of accommodation, clean water and sanitation, medicine, education and so on. In ad***ion to these, it can be easy to see that the rates of illness and unemployment would be high as well as the poor standard of public transports, hospitals, schools...All of these obviously lead the living standard of citizens become worse. For these reasons, Governments should act immediately by funding for social services and well-being, building more and more schools and hospitals, ensuring the safe of life, supplying enough power and water in order to improve the standard of living in world’s cities.
The second thing that must be taken into consideration is environmental pollution. In cities, where less vegetation and trees, the majority of sun energy is is absorbed by urban structures and asphalts, so the temperature here always rises higher than in rural areas. It is widely accepted that noise pollution and traffic jam is also ones of the most problems in the world’s cities and it should be tackle effectively and quickly. Moreover, there is the proliferating construction of building and industrial zones as well as factories and plants for manufacturing many kinds of goods, which are negative effects on the life of citizens. Dealing with these problems, there should be many different divided areas for many purposes of people’s lives apart from industrial factories. As well as this, parks should be constructed in everywhere of city with open spaces, green trees, lakes and ponds for citizens to breath fresh air.
From what has been discussed above, we may finally draw the conclusion that urbanization and environmental pollution is the most concern of the world’s cities and there are some solutions which should be implemented now.

It is the time for us to change.
The first thing that can be seen by every person is pollution. Besides the development of industrial, it has led to many negative impacts on the environment such as ozone layer destruction, rising sea levels, the climate change... In recent years, there are many disasters happened all over the world such as floods, earthquakes, tsunamis… which has claimed thousand of lives. The governments have to pay more attention about environmental protection, shown by actions than words, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, investment for research in clean energy. Another important factor that I should mention is that the citizen who lives and directly affected by the environmental pollution. Human have to understand that their activities will impact on the environment, for simple example, in order to decompose a palstic bag, it have to need five hundred years, just think about it.

Another reason why I prefer the argument is ageing population. Nowaday, along with the development of economic and science, the life con***ions are better and better. According to the WHO, the world health organization, the average life of humans has increased from 60 in 1970 to 73 in 2005. However, we can be clearly seen that people in cities are getting older. This will make shortage of labours, and the government will pay more money for health care services, nursing homes... From my own perspective to solve this problem is that the goverments should raise the retirement age for workers, in the other hand, we not only have enough labours but also take experience of these people.

The last thing i have to mention is that the imbalance *** of newborn childs. The research of BBC.co.uk, one of the most popular website in the world, has shown that the difference between newborn boys and girls has been increasing. For example, in Tokyo this ratio is 129 boys per 100 girls, in Beijing this ratio is higher, 135 boys per 100 girls. This will lead to many negative effects for society in the future, there will be many men can not get married. The government should introduce more stringent regulations such as prohibition of ultrasound fetal *** or dissemination to change people's perceptions on this issue.
From what has been discussed above, we may finally draw the conclusion that government and citizen have to act right now to protect our future.

Along with the development of the society, remarkable changes have been taken place in the 21th century, people are facing to many city problems but the high light problems are the rapid surge of population and environment pollution.
According to latest update from http://geography.about.com – one of the most well-known website in the world about population statics, population in the world has been skyrocketed and it is predicted to be 8 billion in 2025. Besides, with the high speed of urbanization, the population density in the cities is more crowded. Consequently, the economic growth is not as fast as the population speed, it causes imbalance due to the demand for life con***ions such as houses, hospitals, school, social services…From my own perspective, the government should have some solution to absorb inhabitants as improving life quantity, focusing on job opportunities in the countryside to help people are better off so that they do not need to move to cities.
It might also be noted that environment pollution are becoming serious and facing humanity. The facts tell that three-quarters of the carbon dioxide in the world, which is the biggest greenhouse gas, is emitted by cities. Moreover, WHO says 3 million people a year are killed by outdoor air pollution and each year 2.1 million people die from diarrheal diseases associated with poor water. This shows that environmental pollution is becoming an increasingly worse problems that needs to be taken care of as soon as possible, not only for the good of the environment but also for the people live in it such as government need to promulgate policies and legislation about environment protection and the people have environmental protective sense.
From what has been discussed above, we may finally draw the conclusion that: there are so hot and popular problems which only can solve by the combination the government and self – citizens

What are the key problem facing the world’s cities in the 21st century, and what can be done about them ?

Along with the development of society, more and more problems are brought to our attention, in which highlighted three major issues : air pollution, depletion of land resource and the rapid increase of population. It could be said that these matters have never been serious before. Now people can not ignore them as they did in the past but they need to face them seriously and find new direction to solve them.
The first problem that can be seen by every person is air pollution. It is a directly result of the dramatically jump of transport vehicles such as: motorbike, cars, trucks, trains,… However this issue can be solved completely if citizen and government are in a company. People should use the public transport or try to use eco-friendly vehicles. In ad***ion to, government need to promulgate laws that prohibit the use of too old vehicles because they are the main reason which exhaust more emissions.
The second thing that must be taken into consideration is the depletion of land resource. Nowadays, population climb more and more and most of them want to live in a city which makes the city overloaded. Thus the shortage of accommodation is essential. The solution for this matter is sky- high building which help us utilize the space and build more flat. This is also a trend of the 21st century.
Finally, the last but not least problem is the rapid increase of population. Today the world’s population surpassed six billion and will reach seven billion mark in just a few years. It is clearly seen that it is the issue which lead to many other problem people have to face. However there are no radical solution for it as people can only limit their population by carrying out family plan. With this method each family only can give birth to one or two babies.
All reliable evidences point to one saying, that is all cities certainly must face and settle these problem to make their lives better. And doing this thing require the contribution of society.

Solving this problem , the administration need to form the plans to protect environment and the health of people as well.
