    Hi everyone,

Recently I have been interested in literature of english language. I wanted to buy some books to read but I was lost in the forrest of english authors. To be frank, I am more familiar to Russian or French literature but not English one.. Ultimately, I just can name a few prominent authors. I hope you will recommend me some major figures and their works of English literature. One point to add, I am a fan of classic novel and poetry. Thanks.

    3. The love of the King - (forget the author)

    5. Many works of Hermann Hesse
    .........
    Hope you enjoy

I like great novels (fiction). Great in both size and value. For example, War and peace and Les miserables ( I am reading english translation now), Con đường đau khổ (A. Tôn-tôi), Đèn không hắt bóng ( Cao Xuân Hạo dịch, bản tiếng Việt)
I like ''buffalo authors'' slow, deep, and powerful (it is the same way I like 3B great German music composers). Greatness is it. I read Hermingway ''s works but I dun really like them very much. What impressed me is his ''good'' English.
Thanks for recommendation. I will read them.

I like Đèn Không Hắt Bóng too. Read it some years ago, cried when Naoe left Noriko and all the tragedies of his life
I don''t read lots of classics... but well, I''ll just list some authors/books that you may like. Not all of them are from English-speaking countries, but you can find their work in English translations
    - Dostoievsky
    - Victor Hugo
    - Turgenev
    - Tolstoi
(Sure you love the ones above For poetry I like Olga Bergholz. )
Several of the most famous authors (you can Google for full list of classic authors)
    - Mark Twain
    - Charles Dicken
    - Edgar Allan Poe
    - Bram Stoker
    - Jules Verne
    - Daniel Defoe
    - The Bronte sisters
    - Shakespeare
    - F. Scott Fitgerald
    - Honore de Balzac
For poetry, I''d recommend Walt Whitman and Robert Frost. After seeing the movie "Dead Poets Society", I wanted to read more poetry, but it''s harder than prose.. you know..
Some of my favorites (not all of them are classics)
    - Guy de Maupassant
    - Emile Zola
    - Somerset Maugham
    - Paulo Coelho
    - Milan Kundera (totally in love with his work for now - he''s from Czech)
    - Virginia Woolf
    - Haruki Murakami (absolutely awesome - highly recommended: "Norwegian Wood". I love this book!!!)
    - Yasunari Kawabata (I read "The House of the Sleeping Beauties" - I''m pretty sure that this book inspired Gabriel Garcia Marquez to write his latest book, "Memories of My Melancholy Whores".)
    Some other good reads:
    - The Centaur in The Garden ("Con nhân mã ở trong vườn" - Trịnh Lữ dịch) -- Moacyr Scliar.
    - Life of Pi (same translator) -- Yann Martel (coloufulday recommended it already - it''s a really good one )
    - Having Our Say (The Delany Sisters) - one of my most favorite memoir/autobiography/oral history books. Memoirs are interesting - some people don''t like them though.
The latest memoir I bought is "Memoir of A Dutiful Daughter" by Simone de Beauvoir. This one has real literary value, not only a story retold by a famous figure to attract readers. Though, I must confess, that I was curious to see how the relationship of hers with Jean Paul Sartre affected her life and writing. Jean Paul Sartre is a good author too.
Last but not least... also recommended by colourfulday (she/he has nice taste - Hermann Hesse. The three I''ve known so far are Steppenwolf, Narcissus and Goldmund, and Siddhartha. In Vietnamese translations, other books by Hermann Hesse I''ve seen are Câu Chuyện Dòng Sông, Hành Trình Về Phương Đông, and Tuổi Trẻ Băn Khoăn. Dunno if they translated any others.
Sorry that my suggestions are not so organized... Sat nhớ ra thì viết vô thui à Have fun reading!!!
