    Abstract
When the number of bits per symbol is odd, the peak and average power of transmission can be reduced by using cross quadrature amplitude modulations (QAMs) instead of rectangular QAMs. However, since perfect Gray coding is not possible for cross QAMs, using Smith-style Gray coding, this paper derives the exact bit error rate (BER) for cross QAM constellations over ad***ive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading channels.

    Abstract
Based on a Karnaugh map style Gray coding of constellations, we derive a recursive algorithm for the exact bit error rate computation of generalized hierarchical M-ary pulse amplitude modulations (PAM) over ad***ive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and fading channels. We also show how this algorithm can be extended to generalized hierarchical quadrature amplitude modulation constellations (square and rectangular). For the AWGN case, these expressions are in the form of a weighted sum of complementary error functions and are solely dependent on the constellation size M, the carrier-to-noise ratio, and a constellation parameter which controls the relative message importance

Summary:This paper describes an investigation of direct torque control (DTC) for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. The analysis of PMSMs shows that the increase of electromagnetic torque is proportional to the increase of the angle between the stator and rotor flux linkages and therefore fast torque response can be obtained by increasing the rotating speed of the stator flux linkage as fast as possible. The implementation of DTC in PMSM drives is discussed and the switching table specific for an interior PMSM is derived. The proposed control is implemented on a prototype PMSM, which has a standard induction motor stator, and the experimental results show that the torque response is extremely fast. It is also demonstrated that the position sensor is not essential for the inner torque control loop of PMSM drives with DTC

Summary:This paper deals with the performance analysis of the field oriented control (FOC) of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive with a PID (proportional plus integral plus derivative) in DC link voltage control and fuzzy PID for speed control in closed loop operation. A mathematical model of the PMSM drive has been developed by considering each accessories of the model to analyze both the steady state and transient performances of the PMSM drive system. The current controlled inverter feeding power to the PMSM motor is powered from a PWM current controlled converter. The advantages of the integrated PMSM drive are demonstrated. The PID voltage control takes care of the constant DC link voltage to feed the inverter. The fuzzy controller provides a better response to the drive system specially in the steady state con***ion. The state space model developed in terms of derivatives of winding currents, DC link voltage, supply currents, rotor speed, and rotor position are simulated to obtain the required information. Summary: In this paper a self-tuning PID controller based on generalized minimum variance method is applied to the permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) speed control system. The proposed method has approximate minimum variance properties, and can guarantee the stability of the close-loop system by pole-assignment, which is based on the discrete-time mechanical equation and dynamic model of the q-axis current control loop of the PMSM drive system. The complete vector control scheme using the self-tuning PID is implemented in real-time based on a digital signal processor (DSP) for a surface PMSM. Comparing conventional PID regulator, the proposed self-tuning regulator makes the speed control of the PMSM drive more robustness and high performance. Experiments are carried out at low and high speeds, results verified the efficacy of the proposed method.

Summary:Rotor speed in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) suffers from accuracy due to variation of motor parameters such as stator resistance, stator inductance or torque constant. The conventional linear estimators are not adaptive. Neural networks (ANN) have shown better results when estimating or controlling nonlinear systems. In this paper an artificial neural network based high performance speed control system for a PMSM is introduced. The rotor speed of the PMSM can be made to follow an arbitrarily selected trajectory. The main purpose is to achieve accurate trajectory control of the speed, when the motor and load parameters are unknown. The unknown nonlinear dynamics of the motor and the load are captured by the ANN. The performance of the identification and control algorithm are evaluated by simulating them on a typical PMSM motor model.

Summary:Research has indicated that the permanent magnet motor drives, which include the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and the brushless DC motor (BDCM) could become serious competitors to the induction motor for servo applications. The PMSM has a sinusoidal back EMF and requires sinusoidal stator currents to produce constant torque while the BDCM has a trapezoidal back EMF and requires rectangular stator currents to produce constant torque. The PMSM is very similar to the wound rotor synchronous machine except that the PMSM that is used for servo applications tends not to have any damper windings and excitation is provided by a permanent magnet instead of a field winding. Hence the d, q model of the PMSM can be derived from the well-known model of the synchronous machine with the equations of the damper windings and field current dynamics removed. Because of the nonsinusoidal variation of the mutual inductances between the stator and rotor in the BDCM, it is also shown that no particular advantage exists in transforming the abc equations of the BCDM to the d, q frame. Hence the solution of the original abc equations is proposed for the BDCM

Summary:The energy-shaping and maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) principle is used to develop the model and position control of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) in this paper. Firstly, based on the port-controlled Hamiltonian (PCH) systems theory, a PCH position control model of PMSM is established. Secondly, using energy-shaping and MTPA method, the control strategy of PMSM is presented when load torque is known and unknown. The control problem of the PMSM is reduced to the solution of a partial differential equation. The partial differential equation can be transformed into a set of general differential equation by assigning desired interconnection and damping matrix. Finally, the equilibrium stability is also analyzed. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme exhibits good position control and load disturbances attenuation performances.

Summary:Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are widely used in industrial drives due to their simple structure, high efficiency and high factor. Variable speed system of PMSM based on vector has owed an important position where has seriously requirement for celerity and precision. Firstly, the controlling characteristics and working principles of PMSM are analyzed, and the PMSM precision mathematical models are established based on the dq reference coordinates by strict analysis and calculation. The fuzzy model reference adaptive control method uses the fuzzy basis function expansion to represent the unknown parameters and change the identification problem from identifying the original unknown parameters to identifying the coefficients of fuzzy basis function expansion. The stability and convergence properties of the controller are ensured. The results of the simulation based on Matlab and dSPACE experiment show the fuzzy adaptive speed controller has high control and parameter track performance

Summary: The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has been widely used in many accurate servo control systems as it has excellent control qualities, large torque coefficient, small ripple torque, and so on. However, the model uncertainty of PMSM has an important effect on the accuracy of control systems. In this paper, the dynamic model for PMSM systems is established in an experimental method. The adaptive model following control law is presented for the position servo system of PMSM, and the motor velocity signal of the adaptive controller is estimated with the velocity observer. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the adaptive control method and show that the position of the PMSM can follow the output of the reference model well.

Summary:This paper addresses the problem of uncertainties in practical permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), and proposes a simple adaptive internal model within the current feedback structure as a solution. Due to the time varying nature and the high bandwidth property of uncertainties in a practical PMSM drive system, the internal model is simply chosen as the estimated uncertainty function, which adaptively varies with different operating con***ions. Subsequently, the frequency modes of the uncertainty function are embedded in the control effort, and a robust current control performance is yielded. Furthermore, the inclusion of the estimated uncertainty function provides an efficient solution for torque ripple minimization in PMSM drives. This is because the frequency modes of the disturbances to be eliminated i.e., the flux harmonics, are included in the stable closed loop system. As a result, the controller can introduce a very high attenuation gains at different frequency modes corresponding to the flux harmonics. To provide a high bandwidth estimate of the uncertainty function, a simple adaptation law is derived, in the sense of Lyapunov functions, using the nominal current dynamics. Comparative evaluation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme under different operating con***ions.

Summary:The paper introduces the crucial technical difficulty of the low-speed and high-torque gearless drive system is the waveform sinusoidal design of internal potential electromotive force in the Permanent Magnetic Synchronous Machine (PMSM), thereby reduces the ripple torque of PMSM of transmission systems. The paper take the low-speed and high-torque Permanent Magnetic Synchronous Machine of 12 type pumping units drive system as an example, through theoretical analysis and calculation of specific project, MATLAB software is used for the optimum design, ANSOFT software is used for the finite element analysis of the air gap magnetic field, no load back electromotive force and the torque of teeth groove. The distortion rate of the sine waveform of internal potential electromotive force is reduced to less than 3%, the steady running frequency of PMSM reaches 0.2Hz under the rated torque.

Summary:This paper deals with the analysis and hardware implementation of a fuzzy precompensated proportional-integral (FPPI) speed controller for vector controlled (VC) permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive using a digital signal processor. The power circuit of the PMSM drive consists of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based voltage source inverter (VSI) and the gate driver circuit. The hardware of control circuit has current sensors and interfacing circuits. The FPPI speed controller, rotor speed estimation using sensed position signals, the vector controller and PWM current controller for the control of VSI are implemented in assembly language of DSP-ADMC401. The simulation model of the drive system is developed in MATLAB environment with simulink, PSB and FLC toolboxes to analyze the performance of PMSM drive system. Simulated results are validated with test results of the PMSM drive for starting, speed reversal and load perturbation
