    Job description
    Function title: 10-12 PhD positions in Economics and Business available at SOM, the graduate and research school of the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Groningen (The Netherlands).

    SOM offers an excellent environment for candidates interested in high-quality research. The focus of SOM?Ts research activities is on economics, econometrics & finance; marketing; international economics, business & management; operations management & operations research; HRM & organisational behaviour; management accounting; business & information systems; and innovation management.

    General Information
    On 1 September 2008 SOM?Ts PhD programme will start. The aim of the programme is to turn out highly qualified researchers. For this purpose, SOM offers several PhD positions to excellent candidates who recently graduated. The graduate will work on an individual project, leading to a doctoral dissertation. In the initial period, students are offered courses in relevant fields and research methods. The courses in the PhD programme are taught in English. During the remaining period, PhD students will work on their thesis. Work on the dissertation is carried out under supervision of SOM fellows. Supervision is close and the PhD students are encouraged to present papers at international conferences.
    After the first year there will be an assessment of the candidatê?Ts results and the project?Ts progress. Part of that is that the PhD student will have to defend his/her research proposal. Based on this, it will be decided whether a project will be continued.

    Required education/skills:MSc or MPhil in a relevant field
    Fluent in English (written and spoken).

    Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
    Duration of the contract: Four years

    SOM offers two types of positions:

    Employee status
    PhD candidates will have an employee status and receive a starting salary of approximately , 2000 gross per month. This salary increases yearly to achieve the final salary of approximately , 2550 gross per month. PhD candidates with an employee status at SOM are expected to contribute to teaching for on average 15% of their time.

    Ubbo Emmius scholarships
    PhD candidates (international students only) will receive a so-called Ubbo Emmius scholarships of approximately , 1450 gross per month and do not have the employee status. They do not have teaching obligations.
