    "Reds" demolish city rivals

There could hardly have been better weather for the 194th Munich derby between the "Blues" of 1860 and the "Reds" of Bayern, with a cloudless sky, a pleasantly warm 25 degrees and golden sunshine greeting 69,000 spectators to the Olympic Stadium, every last ticket having been sold weeks ago.
By the end of a one-sided game, it was the Bayern fans celebrating in the glorious autumn weather, as they had seen their team destroy the "Lions" 5-1. In the second half in particular, the champions turned on the kind of form that brought so much success last term, and at the final whistle no-one could argue with the emphatic margin of victory.

The German champions had only had two days to recover from Wednesday's Champions' League fixture in Rotterdam. Nonetheless, Ottmar Hitzfeld chose to make only two changes to the side, preferring Owen Hargreaves and Roque Santa Cruz to Pablo Thiam and Claudio Pizarro, who started on the bench.

The last few matches have frequently seen Bayern take the lead early on, but on this occasion it was the other way round. After only 10 minutes the "Lions" were 1-0 in front, Daniel Bierofka firing an unstoppable shot past Oliver Kahn from the edge of the box into the bottom left-hand corner.

The "Reds" were struggling to play their way around the "Blues" packed defence. Even Bayern's wing play was bringing precious little reward. So when an equaliser did come, it owed a lot to assistance from the 1860 rearguard. Giovane Elber caught Torben Hoffmann dawdling in his own penalty area and cleverly laid the ball off for Santa Cruz to gently lob the onrushing Simon Jentzsch in the 28th minute.

Not a minute later Hasan Salihamidzic had an excellent opportunity to put his team in front, but instead of attempting to beat Jentzsch in a one-on-one situation, he chose to pass and the chance was lost.

Bayern were now clearly the better side, taking a tight grip on the game and carving out regular scoring opportunities, the best in the 43rd minute when Bixente Lizarazu's shot from 18 metres brought an excellent fingertip save out of Jentzsch.

But shortly afterwards the Lions' keeper could do nothing to prevent the unmarked Thorsten Fink turning home Hargreaves' cross for Bayern's second in the psychologically vital 45th minute.

The second period opened with chances for both sides from corners. First Santa Cruz nodded the ball narrowly over on 49 minutes, while at the other end Hoffman's header three minutes later was only just wide.

Bayern were increasingly finding space for swift counter-attacks and one of these soon bore fruit. On 54 minutes Hargreaves walzed down the right flank, held up play cleverly until Hasan Salihamidzic had got into position, and delivered a perfect cross for the Bosnian to bulge the rigging with a powerful header for a 3-1 lead.

With the game now firmly under control, Hitzfeld's men slowed the pace without ever ceasing to look dangerous. Indeed Oliver Kahn only had one more serious shot to deal with when Daniel Borimirov tried his luck from long range on 78 minutes.

But Bayern were still hungry for goals, and after a well-rehearsed free-kick routine Elber notched a fourth with 10 minutes to go. Substitute Claudio Pizarro crowned a masterly display on 85 minutes from the penalty spot for an emphatic 5-1 final scoreline.
