The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), an international postgraduate institution based in Thailand, invites recent doctoral graduates of exceptional promise to apply for fellowships to give them the opportunity to undertake further research on a full-time basis. AIT has faculty members and researchers from about 40 countries and excellent laboratory facilities in a convivial environment.

AIT has available postdoctoral fellowships for financial year 2005. These fellowships will be awarded to those whose proposed research projects have a high potential of impact in the areas selected by the Schools for support, with the accompanying expectation that the lifelong careers of recipients will be marked by significant contributions to teaching and research in science, technology, engineering and management. AIT makes the awards based on the quality of research projects proposed by applicants along with the previous records of applicants.

Each fellowship will cover a duration of six months up to one year, to be awarded not later than 15 January 2005, with a stipend of Baht 30,000 per month, and a research grant to cover the conduct of research. A round-trip economy airfare from the city of origin to Bangkok will be provided. There will be no ad***ional provision for travel expenses of family members. Postdoctoral fellows will be provided office space and access to the Library and other academic facilities of AIT.

Remote sensing and GIS

Construction process simulation

Nanotechnology in material engineering

Offshore structure

Structural health monitoring

Risks and hazards in earth science

Real-time flood control operation modeling

Managing pesticides in integrated vegetable-fish farming systems

Applied genetics and bioinformatics

Renewable energy resources and technologies

Environmental biotechnology

Poverty reduction and sustainable development

People, forests and sustainable livelihoods

Poverty-environment nexus in the urban environmental management context

Entrepreneurship in technology-based firms

Career management and organizational performance

Trade flows among countries and regions

Privatization/restructuring of industries

Assessment of technological resource and capabilities: threats and opportunities

Knowledge transfer and knowledge management in high-tech industries

Telecommunications technology and public policy

Responsibilities of Postdoctoral Fellows

Postdoctoral fellows are expected to reside on the AIT campus and participate in Institute activities during the appointment.

Postdoctoral fellows will be expected *****bmit a report and give a presentation of completed research.

Eligibility

The postdoctoral fellowships are open to all Asian nationals.

Applicants are required to have earned a doctoral degree from a reputable university other than AIT within the last five years by the time of application. Only those already engaged in a teaching and research career or those planning such a career are eligible to apply. They should have some proven interest and/or records of excellence in research, particularly publications in peer-reviewed international journals.

Application

Applicants should submit a complete application consisting of the following: 1) official transcripts of grades; 2) curriculum vitae (including academic degrees with dates of conferral, discipline and institution, and a recent photograph); 3) list of publications and reprints of best publications; 4) three letters of recommendation; 5) doctoral dissertation abstract; and 6) detailed plan of research.

The full application package in hard copy should be received by 15 November 2004. Only successful applicants will be notified.

Qualified individuals with external funding who wish to be attached to the Institute to do research are most welcome to apply.

Con***ions of Appointment

An AIT postdoctoral fellow shall not hold another comparable fellowship concurrently. Each postdoctoral fellow is expected to devote full time to the research program for which the fellowship was awarded.
