Candidate: Yes, Harbin is about a thousand kilometres away from Beijing. It takes you about 15 hours to get there by train. It?Ts very cold there in winter, much colder than it is in Beijing. The average temperature in winter is about 20 degrees centigrade below zero. I have experienced minus 30 degrees. It was terrible.
Interviewer: Oh, yes. I can?Tt stand cold weather.
Candiadate: But many people in my hometown like winter, because they can do a lot of winter sports, such as skating and skiing. And it?Ts fun to play in the snow, too. They enjoy winter sports very much, My hometown is famous for its annual ice sculpture festival, which attracts visitors from all over the world. You can see ice houses, ice palacies, ice figures, ice birds, even the Great Wall and Effiel Tower made of ice. You?Tll feel that you are in a totally different world. I like the ice lanterns very much. They are of different shapes and colours. It?Ts fascinating.
Interviewer: How about summer in your hometown?
Candidate: It?Ts very nice in summer there. It?Ts cooler than it is in Beijing. My hometown is a summer resort. You may swim in the Songhua River or relax on an island in the river. I think the average temperature in summer there is about 26 degrees centigrade.
Interviewer: Have you noticed any other differences between your hometown and Beijing?
Candidate: Yes, I think there is some difference I the architecture styles between these two cities. The modern buildings are more or less the same. But the old buildings are different. In my hometown, you can see many buildings of Russian style. The tops of the buildings look like an onion. But these kinds of buildings can?Tt be seen in Beijing. My hometown is influenced by Russian culture in many ways, because some Russians came to this city a long time ago and lived there. For example, bread is called Mianbao in Chinese. But in my hometown, it is called ?ohleb? instead. It?Ts a Russian word. Many streets and shops have Russian names. So Harbin has earned its reputation as ?oMoscow in the East?.
Interviewer: Is there any difference between the food in the two cities?
Candidate: Well, I haven?Tt seen a big difference in the food between these two places. They are more or less the same. They are tasty. But Beijing has many excellent restaurants serving food from almost every part in China and from every country in the world. You can have very hot and spicy food from Sichuan, sweet food from Guangdong, American food, French food, Japanese food, Korean food etc?
Interviewer: How about the difference between the people in the two places?
Candidate: In my opinion, people in my hometown are more straightforward. They say what they want to say, seldom in a roundabout way. So this gives you an impression that they are quarrelsome. I think this character is affected by the cold weather. You know, people have to do things very quickly in cold weather. Another characteristic of the people in my hometown is that they are friendly and generous. Whenever you are in trouble, they will give you some help. When you eat out together, they usually offer to pay the bill for the meal. Once you?Tve made friends with them, they are your friends forever. But in Beijing, I had some unpleasant experiences. I remember I went shopping in a big clothing store one day. I asked for the price of a leather jacket. To my surprise, the salesgirl looked at me for some time and then said it was very expensive. These kinds of things often happen in Beijing. People from other places are looked down upon by the local people in Beijing.
? WHAT FAMILY MEMBERS DO YOU LIVE WITH?
Interviewer: Could you tell me something about your family?
Candidate: yes. There are three people in my family- my wife, my son and myself. My son is 2 years old. He is a lovely and very clever boy. He has my wife?Ts features: same eyes, same nose and same mouth. He goes to a day- care not far from my home. My wife is a university teacher of computer science.
? WHAT ARE YOU STUDYING?
My responsibilty is to design questionnaires and surveys and then analyze the data.
? WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR STUDIES?
The academic vitality and the physical beauty of the university combine to produce the perfect atmosphere in which to study. I major in law. The teaching is good. The teachers have a special approach to teaching. They don?Tt just give lectures and tell us to read books. You know, the whole course is based on a problem- solving approach. I like the really practical orientation of the course. I really enjoy my study in the university and I also make a lot of friends.
? WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT LEARNING ENGLISH?
Almost everyone I know has studied a foreign language to one degree or another. It is said? you will never understand another country until you can speak their language?. I agree because the way people express themselves in their own language gives one a great insight into their culture. I also think that learning a new language will never do you any harm, rather it will be very useful. Right ow there is a big emphasis all over the world on learning the English language, as it is one of the bridges to our future. It has just recently been announced that all employees of government institutions are strongly encouraged to be fluent in English. English is a way to exchange history, ideas and other information with so many different countries. Just think that most leading coutries in the world now have English as their first or second language.
? HOW OFTEN DO YOU USE ENGLISH?
It is very important to use the language as often as you can. ?oUse it or lose it?, as the experts say. Even saying the simplest phrases over and over helps you to absorb new phrases you will learn in the future. The learning process should be in spiral direction, always beginning from a solid base of vocabulary and grammar that you have already accompolished.
Learning English shows initiative, diligence and intelligence.
Apart from that, learning English can be fun. You meet new friends and together you tackle what first seems insurmountable, and yet, little by little you begin to understand, speak, learn and communicate. It can give you a real sense of accomplishment.
