NHỮNG LỖI VỀ HÌNH DUNG TỪ
70. Đặt sai vị trí
Không viết: I have a book new and interesting.
Phải viết: I have a new and interesting book. (Tôi có 1 cuốn sách mới và hay).
NHẬN XÉT:
Nhiều học viên hay đặt sai vị trí hình dung từ, nhất là trong trường hợp có nhiều hình dung từ định phẩm 1 danh từ, chỉ vì quá chú trọng đến thứ tự câu tiếng Việt. Nên nhớ rằng trong Anh ngữ, hình dung từ khi định phẩm 1 danh từ, bao giờ cũng đứng trước danh từ đó.
PHỤ CHÚ: Hình dung từ đặt sau danh từ ở 1 vài trường hợp:
1. Khi định phẩm cho something, nothing, anything.
Ví dụ:
There is nothing new. (Không có gì mới)
He doesn''t like anything unusual. (Anh ta không thích cái gì khác thường)
2. Khi hình dung từ có bổ túc từ.
Ví dụ:
I drink a glass full of wine. (Tôi uống 1 ly đầy rượu)
71. Viết hình dung từ ở hình thức đa số
Không viết:
I have many goods friends.
There are many beautifuls flowers.
Phải viết:
I have many good friends. (Tôi có nhiều bạn tốt)
There are many beautiful flowers. (Có nhiều hoa đẹp)
NHẬN XÉT: Chúng ta cần nhớ luôn rằng: khác với Pháp ngữ, hình dung từ bên Anh ngữ không thay đổi.
72. Viết nhầm THE POORS thay vì THE POOR
Không viết: We have to help the poors.
Phải viết: We have to help the poor. (Chúng ta phải giúp những người nghèo khổ).
NHẬN XÉT: Những hình dung từ dùng như danh từ không có hình thức đa số (dầu chúng có nghĩa tập thể) như "the poor" (những người nghèo), "the rich" (những người giàu), "the dead" (những người đã chết). Trừ: "my dears", "your betters", "my pretties"...
73. Viết lầm hình dung từ ở bậc so sánh
Không viết:
My young sister is more pretty than yours.
My brother is more gentle than yours.
You are more clever than your sister.
This street is more narrow than that one.
Phải viết:
My young sister is prettier than yours. (Em gái tôi xinh hơn em gái của bạn)
My brother is gentler than yours. ( Em trai tôi lịch sự hơn em trai của bạn)
You are cleverer than your sister. (Bạn thông minh hơn chị gái bạn)
This street is narrower than that one. (Con đường này hẹp hơn con đường kia)
NHẬN XÉT:
Theo văn phạm, muốn thành lập cấp so sánh hơn, ta thêm tận er sau những hình dung từ 1 vần (như long - longer, big - bigger) và ta viết more trước những hình dung từ nhiều vần (nghĩa là 2 vần trở lên) (như beautiful - more beautiful).
Nhưng còn những luật trừ bên cạnh vì học viên sơ ý nên mới vội khái quát vấn đề mà sa vào những lỗi như trên. Luật trừ đó là: những hình dung từ nhiều vần tận cùng bằng y, le, er, ow lên cấp so sánh hơn theo luật như hình dung từ 1 vần.

74. Lầm FOOLISH với FOOL
Không viết:
You are fool.
You are a foolish.
Phải viết:
You are a fool. (Anh là thằng ngu)
You are foolish.
NHẬN XÉT: Fool là 1 danh từ và có nghĩa là "thằng ngu", "thằng ngốc", foolish là 1 hình dung từ và có nghĩa là "ngu", "ngốc". A fool = a foolish person.
75. Lầm COWARD là 1 hình dung từ
Không viết: You are a coward boy.
Phải viết: You are a coward. (Anh là 1 người hèn nhát)
NHẬN XÉT: Coward không phải là 1 hình dung từ, nhưng là 1 danh từ. Hình dung từ là cowardly.
76. Lầm TRUE với TRUTH
Không viết: Is it truth that you are ill?
Phải viết: Is it true that you are ill? (Có phải thật là anh ốm không?)
NHẬN XÉT: Truth là 1 danh từ và nghĩa là "chân lý", "sự thật", true là 1 hình dung từ.
77. Lầm HOT là 1 danh từ
Không viết: There is much hot in Saigon this month.
Phải viết: It is very hot in Saigon this month. (Tháng này ở Sài Gòn nóng lắm)
NHẬN XÉT: Hot là 1 hình dung từ, heat mới là 1 danh từ có nghĩa là "sức nóng"
78. Lầm OTHER là 1 danh từ
Không viết: The others boys are absent.
Phải viết: The other boys are absent. (Những đứa trẻ khác vắng mặt)
NHẬN XÉT: Other có thể vừa là danh từ, vừa là 1 đại danh từ. Ở câu trên, other dùng như hình dung từ nên không có hình thức đa số. Ta không thể viết "the other boys", nhưng có thể viết: the others ("những người khác")
