Bài LISTENING 1 của lớp E36:
    SECTION 1
    R = Receptionist
    W = Woman
    P = Police Officer
R: Good evening, City Police Station. Can I help you?
W: Oh hello, I''d like to report a stolen briefcase, please. Example
R: Just a minute and I''ll put you through.
    Repeat
P: Lost property. Can I help you?
W: Oh, yes. I''ve had my briefcase stolen.
P: OK ... I''ll take some details ... Tell me what it looks like, first of all.
    W: Well ... it''s a soft leather one, you know, not a heavy box-type like a man''s.
P: Mmm ... and how does it close?
W: It''s got buckles at the front ... two of them They''re gold-plated ones. Q1
P: Fine . Was it locked?
    W: No, I''m afraid not.
P: Never mind. Any distinguishing features?
    W: Pardon?
P: Any marks or badges on it that make it stand out? W: Only the brand name. P: And where''s that?
W: It''s on the back ... at the bottom in the left-hand corner. It''s Sagi. Oh and Q2
there''s a scratch ... it''s quite bad but small ... directly above the brand
name. I did it recently putting it on my bike. P: Right, got that. So, what did you have inside the briefcase? W: Well all my papers from college. It''s so frustrating but, thank goodness for
computers, I haven''t lost them completely! P: Yes, you''re lucky.
W: I had my wallet in my pocket so I didn''t lose that but there were also my pens Q3
which I got for my birthday and a novel I was planning to read on the train. P: Right. Where exactly did you lose the briefcase?
W: Well ... I couldn''t believe it. I was standing on the platform ... it was right
next to me. P: You were holding it?
W: I''d just put it down on the floor but I could almost feel it beside me. I was Q4
watching for my tram because sometimes it comes early and then next time I
looked, my briefcase wasn''t there. P: And what time was this?
    W: Ah ... it was ... it must have been about 5.20 ... no a bit later. I''d say 5.30 Q5

because it was just getting crowded and the train normally comes at about twenty-five to six.
P: Right, if you''ll just give me some personal details ...
    W: Yes.
P: What name is it? W: I''m Mary Prescott. P: Can you spell that?
    W: Yes, it''s P-R E-S-C-O-T-T. Q6
    P: And your address?
    W: Flat 2, 41, Fountain Road, Canterbury. Qs 7 and 8
    P: Fountain Road. W: Yes, number 41.
P: And have you got a contact telephone number? W: Yes, it''s 7-5 double 2-3-9.
P: 7-5-double 239. Fine. One last question ?" what would you say the value of Q9
your briefcase is? W: Including the contents? P: Yes, Just a rough estimate is fine.
W: I''m not sure. Well, the briefcase itself is quite new; I bought it last month for
£40. I suppose about £65. The contents are worth about 20 or 25 pounds at Q10
    least.
P: That''s fine. Well, if you could come down to the station tomorrow, you can
sign this form and have a look at what we''ve got here. W: OK, thanks. ''Bye. P: Goodbye.
    SECTION 2
Newsreader: This is the 6 o''clock news for Tuesday 25 November. And first the headlines:
The Prime Minister has promised to help the drought stricken farmers in the Example
northern part of the country who haven''t seen rain for nearly two years. And in
Sydney a group of school children are successfully rescued from a plane which Q11
landed in the sea shortly after take-off. Transport workers are on strike in
Melbourne over a pay claim and the strike looks set to spread to other states. And Q12
on a fashionable note, there s to be a new look for the staff of QANTAS, Q13
    Australia''s national airline.
The Prime Minister has pledged today that he will make two hundred and fifty Q14
million dollars available to help the drought stricken farmers who have not seen
ram for years, get through the next five years. Money that was to have been spent
on the re-structuring of Sydney''s road system has been re-allocated to what the Q15
P:rime Minister described as ''a more worthy cause''. Farmers are to receive
financial assistance to help see them through the worst drought in over 50 years.
Many farmers feel that while the money is welcome it has come too late to save Q16
them and their farms from financial ruin and are angry that the government did not act sooner.
A group of school children who were travelling in a privately chartered Q17
aeroplane from Sydney to Queensland to take part in a musical concert found
themselves swimming for the shore when their aeroplane had to land in the sea
just three minutes after taking off from Sydney airport. The pilot managed to Q18
bring the aircraft and its 50 passengers down safely in the calm waters of Botany
Bay where boats and pleasurecraft were able to come to the rescue of the boys. Q19
The fact that it was a weekend meant that there were hundreds of boats in
the bay enjoying the good weather and this undoubtedly helped the rescue
operation. ''We owe our lives to the skill of the pilot,'' said one of the boys, but the Q20
pilot replied modestly that it was ''all part of a day''s work''. However, all their Q21
musical instruments were lost and they never got to play at their concert.
    SECTION 3
    M = male student F = female lecturer
M: Hello can I come in?
F: Oh yes, come in. How can I help you?
M: I was looking for the Economics office. I''ve been all over the Arts Faculty Example
building looking for it but I could only find the School of Accounting and Economic History. Is this the right place?
F: Yes this is the School of Economics.
M: Oh good. Um, I''m a new student and I was wondering if someone could give
me some information. F: Well I might be able to help. I lecture on that program. What do you need to
    Know?
M: Quite a few things, actually. Firstly, how many lectures a week do I have to Attend?
F: Ah, well, the Economics I course is a double unit so there are two lectures a week and one tutorial. The lectures are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday. M: What time?
F: Let me see ... You know this information is all in the handout which you Q22
should have received yesterday at the orientation meeting. M: Oh, was there a meeting yesterday? I didn''t know about that ... no one mentioned ... F: Yes, there was, but never mind. Now lectures are at four m the afternoon. M: Four''s a bit late. I''ve got a part time job that starts at four thirty.
F: Well, you can''t be in two places at once, can you, and attendance at lectures Q23
is necessary. We expect at least 90% attendance at this university you know. M: 90%! That''s high. Do they enforce that rule? F: Yes, we do. We''re pretty strict about it actually.
M: And what times have been set down for the tutorials ?" do you have that Information?
F: That''s a very well attended course so there''s a number of tutorial times.
Monday, Wednesday and Friday, all at 9 o''clock. Yours will be allocated at Q24
the first lecture. M: Can''t I choose the time?
F: Maybe, maybe not.. You''ll have to talk to the lecturer on the course. Q25
Dr. Roberts is his name. M: Oh, OK.
F: Anything else I can help you with while you''re here?
M: Well, yes, actually. Do you know what the course requirements are? I mean,
how much work is expected for this course? F: Well, you have to complete a tutorial paper. M: What does that involve?
F: Well, it''s a piece of work on a given topic based on some set reading texts.
You''ll have to give a small talk to your tutorial group ... Q26
M: How long does that have to be? F: Oh, about 25 minutes usually. M: I have to talk for 25 minutes?
F: Yes, that''s right. And then you have to write up your piece of work and give Q27
it to the lecturer to be marked. M: Right. And is that all?
F: No. You also have to complete a 3,000 word essay on a topic. M: Can I choose the topic?
F: Yes, usually you can. Q28
M: Right. That shouldn''t be too bad.
F: And in ad***ion to that there is an exam.
M: An exam! What sort of exam?
F: Well, it''s an open book exam. Q29
M: Does that mean I can have the text book with me during the exam? F: Yes, that''s right.
M: And can you give me any idea about the content of the first year of
Economics so that I can get into some reading? F: Well, you''ll be getting the reading list next week when lectures start. All the
books are in the library. M: Yes, but won''t everyone else take them out as soon as they get the reading
    list too?
F: Well, yes, they might. But most of the important ones are held in Closed Q30
Reserve ... that''s a part of the library where you can go to read books but you can''t take them out of the building.
M: What did you call that section of the library?
F: Closed Reserve. However, we do recommend that you buy the core books.
You''ll find them useful and you''ll need them for the exam. M: Yes, I suppose I will. But what is the focus of the course?
F: Well, the course at this university has a vocational focus, that is a focus on Q31
preparing its graduates for work, so we''re orientated very much towards employment.
M: So my chances of getting a job are good?
F: Well, provided you get good results.
M: Well look thanks for your time. You''ve been really helpful.
F: That''s fine. See you next week then.
    SECTION 4
    Lecturer:
Good morning and welcome to the University of Westlands. My name is Marcia
Mayhew and I''m the co-ordmator of the Bachelor of Social Science degree. This
morning I''d like to tell you about the structure of the university and about some
of the requirements of the degree that you''re about to enter. The Bachelor of
Social Science is in one faculty within the university, that is the faculty where I Q32
work, known as Arts and Social Sciences. Here on this campus we also have the faculties of Architecture, Law and Science and Technology among others. It''s important to know something about the structure of the faculty because, as you go through your course, you may need to call on members of the staff to help you.
At the top of the faculty we have a dean and below the dean we have three Q33
divisions; each division has a divisional head and your degree is located in the
Division of Social Sciences. Within each of the divisions, there are the departments
and each of these offers the different degrees. For instance two of the departments
which offer the major subjects for your award are Sociology and Psychology. Each
has a departmental head but for practical purposes the people you are going to
see the most of are myself as co-ordinator of the social sciences degree and the
actual lecturers who are teaching the subjects that you are taking. For instance in
the first semester you''ll be doing four subjects psychology sociology history and Q34
    economics.
If you have any problems or difficulties, not that I''m anticipating you will, but
you never know, then you should go and see your lecturers. For instance, you
may find that you can''t meet a deadline for an essay or perhaps you re having Q35
problems with attendance. These seem to be the two most common problems that Q36
    students face.
If your lecturers are unavailable, you can always come and see me in my office.
I''m available on Wednesday and Thursday mornings and on Friday afternoons Q37
Outside these hours, perhaps you could ring the secretary and make an appointment.
Now you''ll note that all of the subjects which you undertake in the first year
are composed of lectures and tutorials. A lecture is about an hour long and a
tutorial usually runs for about two hours. A lecture is rather like what I am doing
now where one person will talk to all of you together on a subject. We do ask you
to try to attend the lectures.
A tutorial is perhaps where most of the learning occurs at a university. You will
be divided into groups of between 12 and 15 students and each week one of you
will have to present a piece of work to the group as a whole and then the group
will discuss what you''ve said. It''s this discussion, this exchange of ideas, which Q38
really constitutes the basis of university learning, in my view. Listening to lectures
in many ways is just giving you information that you could access for yourself in
the library but the discussion at the tutorial is very important. This doesn''t mean that you shouldn''t go to the lectures though!
Other factors to be particularly concerned about are the structure of essays and
delivery of written material and in particular I would like to mention the question
of plagiarism. Plagiarism is taking other people''s work without acknowledging it,
that is, without saying where it comes from. Of course all essays are based on
research done by other people but you must remember to attribute the work to the Q39
original writer. And while it''s a good idea to work with other people don''t hand
in work which is exactly the same as your friend''s work because we will notice! If
you don''t acknowledge the source of your information then you run the risk of Q40
failing the subject or in very serious cases you might be denied entry to the university.
Last but not least, stay in touch with us. If things are getting you down, don''t Q41 tests
go and hide. Come and talk to us about it. That''s what we are here for. Right, global
thank you very much for coming along today.

    You should say:
    Where you met them
    What subject they taught
    What was special about them
And explain why this person has influenced you so much.
Of all the lecturers at school, I like Mr. Long best. He is my teacher of English in the 12th grade.
He is a fifty ?" year old man of medium stature and good personality. Having much experienced and ability in his profession, he has performed his teaching job very successfully. His lectures were always lively and easy to understand. He also has great affection for his students. He often gave us valuable assistance and advice on our studies and behaviour. Although he was kind and open ?" minded, Mr. Long was sometimes very serve with lazy and disobedient students. Under his teaching, we made good progress in our studies.
Mr. Long is admired and loved by his colleagues and students. He has such an influence on me as he is really a shining example to all of us.
    PART 3
    Discussion topics:
    Developments in education
    Example questions:
How has education changed in your country in the last 10 years?
Along with the change in policy, Vietnam has allowed development of semi-public, private, and people-funded school in ad***ion to public ones. The purpose of this policy is to create favorable con***ions for all people to participate in managing education, overcoming the existing authoritarianism in the management of education.
With the support of the United Nations, the World Bank, the United States, and other concerned nations, since 1999, education in Vietnam has begun to take on reforming projects toward a market oriented but still under socialist direction.
What changes do you foresee in the next 50 years?
In the next 50 years, Viet Nam would offer free education for 1st -12th grade to reduce inequalities. Besides, the government should raise teachers?T salary and benefits to a comfortable, compatible level to reduce corruptions and increase motivation. Finally, we should implement renovated educational programs that focus on independent thinking and characters building.
    A national education system
    Example questions:
How do the expectations of today?Ts school leavers compare with those of the previous generation?
Nowadays school leavers are expected to have a general knowledge of work and a good working attitude. Some skills like those required to make decisions and to analyse are regarded as important by many, but are only applicable to employees holding major positions. It is good enough for high school leavers to start with basic skills. However, the present curriculum in Viet Nam prepares pupils for academic studies, not equipping them with general skills and knowledge for work
What role do you think extracurricular activities play in education?
Extracurricular activities, such as sports, drama, music, scouting, dance, and various clubs, are an important part of the educational experience of many students. Most studies find that children who participate in these activities are more successful academically than those who don''t. It''s not clear whether this is because the brighter, more energetic students are also the ones who participate more in extracurricular activities, or whether the activities themselves boost students'' academic performance. Probably both are true.
Extracurricular activities offer other benefits as well. For a child who is not gifted academically, the chance to excel in the arts or in sports, for example, can make a huge difference in self-esteem. Many extracurricular activities teach real-world skills, such as journalism, photography, or debate, which can lead to lifelong interests, even careers. Teens and preteens who devote themselves to service projects, such as food drives, book drives, or neighborhood improvement projects, learn that they can make a difference and contribute to society. They also learn teamwork and leadership skills that may be even more important in the long run than some of the academic subjects they study.
Extracurricular activities also play a role in reducing drug and alcohol use and irresponsible ***ual activity in older children and teens, especially those who otherwise would be on their own after school. It''s not only a matter of keeping the kids busy. The self-esteem and sense of purpose that children can get from serious involvement in extracurricular activities may help raise their aspirations and give them a reason to say "no" to risky behaviors.
As important as the activities themselves are the relationships young people can build with the committed adults who direct the activities. In a groundbreaking study of children growing up in Hawaii, it was often the presence of this sort of supportive relationship, either with parents or with another adult--that made the difference between success in life and later unemployment or even legal problems.
Different styles/ methods of teaching and learning
    Example questions:
What method of learning works best for you?
I have found that I am primarily an au***ory learner; hearing something a couple of times works the best. Otherwise reading the material over at least twice (time permitting) works well too. I think it also depends on the material you are trying to study. It''s also helpful to sometimes draw out diagrams or pictures.
How beneficial do you think it is to group students according to their level of ability?
    1. Students come to a more complete understanding by comparing with others.
    2. Having to explain to others encourages elaboration.
    3. Students with better skills serve as models.
    4. Discussion of controversial topics promotes more sophisticated thinking.
    5. They''re usually more motivating

    PART 1
The examiner asks the candidate about him/herself, his/ her home, work or studies and other familiar topics.
    EXAMPLE
    FESTIVALS
? Tell me about the most important festival in your country.
Tet Nguyen Dan (The Lunar Year) has become so familiar, so sacred to the Vietnamese that when Spring arrives, the Vietnamese, wherever we may be, are all thrilled and excited with the advent of Tet, and we feel an immense nostalgia, wishing to come back to our homeland for a family reunion and a taste of the particular flavours of the Vietnamese festivities.
? What special food and activities are connected with this festival?
Eating is important on the new year holidays. On the last day of the old year, the preparation of food to offer to the ancestors is of special significance. Dishes to offer to the ancestors differ in the Northern, Central and Southern parts of the country, depending on our respective weather con***ions at the time and on different local agricultural products available. What is common in all regions of the country during Tet holidays are the varieties of soups, and fried, boiled, and stewed dishes. In the North, the menu for the Tet banquet includes pig trotters stewed with dried bamboo shoots, boiled chicken, carp cooked in salted sauce, jellied meat, and kohlrabi, cauliflower or onion fried with pig skin or lean pork. Thus, the menu includes meat, fish and vegetables. In ad***ion, there are two other items that can not be missed: Banh chung (square cake made of glutinous rice, pork and green beans wrapped in the dong leaves and boiled) and pickled onions. As one eats much meat during Tet, one should eat some sour pickled onions to facilitate digestion.
? What do you most enjoy about it?
The Giao Thua is the most sacred point of time, the passage from the old to the new year. It is popularly believed that in Heaven there are twelve Highnesses in charge of monitoring and controlling the affairs on earth, each of them taking charge of one year. The giao thua is the moment of seeing off the old chieftain upon the conclusion of his term and welcoming in the new one upon his assumption of office. For this reason, every home makes offerings in the open air to pray for a good new year.
After the giao thua is the start of the new year with many customs and practices, amusements and entertainment, all of a distinct Vietnamese folk culture.
? Do you think festivals are important for a country? Why?
All the festivals that we celebrate have some profound meaning in it and they have some pragmatic purpose also. There are some other purposes also that a festival serves and usually you will find that people meet each other along with their families and thus improve their social life.
    PART 2
You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes.
You have one minute to think about what you?Tre going to say.
You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
Describe a film or a TV programme which has made a strong impression on you.
    You should say:
What kind of film or TV programme it was, e.g comedy
When you saw the film or TV programme
What the film or TV programme was about
And explain why this film or TV programme made such an impression on you.
Some years ago, when we were dating with each other, my husband and I went to August Theatre to see an old American film, whose name was ?oLove Story?. We liked this film because of its interesting plot, and because we could see our favorite movie stars in it.
When we arrived, the theatre was crowded with people. We bought our tickets and entered the hall just in time for the film. It was about 2 young lovers, who were wonderfully happy together, but in the end destiny led them to a tragic death.
All the spectators felt sorry for them. Some even wept for their misfotune when the film came to the end. The story of their sufferings also moved me deeply. Moreover, I was most impressed by the clear pictures, the good music and especially the excellent performances of the actors and actresses.
?oLove Story? is really one of the best films I have ever seen.
    PART 3
    Discussion topics:
People?Ts cinema ?" going habits nowadays
    Example questions:
Do you think the cinema has increased or decreased in popularity in recent years?
Cinema has always been a trendy type of amusement for many decades. They really help to relieve one from stress and slot in with other people. In recent times, there has been a rise in the trend of private cinema viewing. A lot of families, groups, friends, and business colleagues frequently hire cinemas for private viewings where they can enjoy themselves with no interruptions, disturbance, or noise created by huge crowds.
In your opinion, will this trend continue into the future?
In my view, cinemas will continue to be popular in the future because people of all ages will always seek for them to get enjoyment.
Making a film or TV drama of real/ fictional events
    Example questions:
What are the advantages and disadvantages of making films or real-life events?
How important do you think it is for a film ?" maker to remain true to the original story?
Censorship and the freedom of the film-maker/ TV producer
    Example questions:
Should films and television be censored or should we be free to choose what we see?
How do you think censorship laws will change in the next 20 years?

Bài Listening Vocab của lớp E35 (The Media)
    Recording 19a
Good morning, my name is Dan Taylor and I''m Professor of Sociology here at Manly University.
Our modern society often prides itself on its free press and. with access to the Internet and cable television the news is broadcast 24 hours a day. However, we have just completed a study which reveals that the general public is increasingly ill-informed today. For this pro)ect we compiled a list of what we considered to be the most significant current affairs stories and then we assessed how these stories were reported by newspapers and radio and television networks. Alarmingly, we found that as many as 25 significant news stories were either under-reported or omitted from the news altogether.
It would seem that the media today seeks to entertain rather than inform the public. I define censorship as anything which interferes with the free flow of information in our society. And this would seem to be what tabloid journalism is doing. They are effectively censoring important news stories on the basis that they may not be interesting or entertaining enough. One example is the widening gap between the rich and the poor. This is a major problem in big cities today and yet you are unlikely to find a reference to it in any news headlines. Instead, you''re more likely to find stories about the latest celebrity, with important news content relegated to the back pages.
    Recording 19b
Teacher: Would you like to be famous?
Student: I think a lot of people want to be famous nowdays and that''s why reality TV is so popular. But I wouldn''t like to be famous at all. Being famous nowadays simply means that you''re in the tabloids a lot and you''re followed by the paparazzi everywhere you go. I''d find that very intrusive. Famous people have no privacy at all in any part of their life. Their life also seems to be very superficial because they spend all of their time going to parties and trying to look glamorous. It all seems very artificial to me - they just don''t seem to be part of the real world at all.
Teacher: Hmm. Do you think famous people have a positive or a negative influence on young people?
Student: I think they should have a positive influence on young people, but many of them don''t. Some personalities are good role models and use their celebrity status to encourage people to think about important issues, but we often see photos of famous people behaving badly.
Teacher: Nowadays we have access to the news 24 hours a day. What effect does this have?
Student: I think it can affect us in both positive and negative ways. On the one hand, it''s very convenient to be able to catch up with what''s happening in the world at any time of the day or night, no matter where you are. But on the other hand, this kind of news can give you a distorted view of what''s happening, because even minor news stories are given more importance than they perhaps should have.

A Oh hi. everybody. It''s Julia here. It''s Thursday afternoon. I''m just ringing to remind you that I''m coming for dinner on l''riday night. I''ll be there about 7.30. See you soon.
B Johnson''s Repairs here. Your DVD player''s now working and ready for collection. You''ll need to pay £45 for the work that''s been done. Bye.
C This is the university bookshop here. I''m afraid we haven''t been able to obtain the book you ordered on Asian Economies as unfortunately it''s out of print. Sorry about that.
D Dr Boyd''s surgery here. I''m afraid we''ll have to cancel your appointment tomorrow as unfortunately Dr Boyd has the flu. Could you come on Monday at 3.30pm instead?
E Hello, this is Sam. Message for Ian. We''re having a farewell party for Prof. Hall on Saturday. You know he''s going to China for two years. Give us a call on 98184078.

RFCFPnoNisr Good morning. City Aquarium, Georgina speaking. TEACHER Oh hello. I''d like some information
about the cost of visiting the aquarium. RECEPTIONIST Certainly.
TEACHER I''m thinking of bringing a group of people to the aquarium. What would be the cheapest way of doing that? RECEPnoNist Well... you have a couple of options.
The standard price for a ticket for a child is $14. TEACHER OK.
RECEPTIONIST But they must be under 15 years of age. Otherwise they rank as an adult, in which case it would be S27 for a single admission.
    Right. I see. Well ... they''re all over 15, I''m afraid.
So it would be the adult entry fee then. But the good thing about this ticket is that there''s no hooking required. Yes. That''s an advantage, but I think that''s a bit expensive for us. quite honestly. Is it possible to get a student concession? These people are all studying English here at the moment and they''re on a bit of a budget, if you know what I mean.
Yes. Students can get in for S19 a head.
Oh, OK ...That''s about a30% reduction.
isn''t it? I suppose that''s not bad, when
    you think about it.
To be eligible for that price they do
    need to show a passport.
OK. I''ll remember that. And do I need
to hook if I''m bringing a group?
How many of you are there?
Why? Are there group prices as well?
Oh yes. If you have a minimum often
    people.
So how much does that work out at? Well, there''s a flat fee of $250 for a group of ten.
Um ... that''s even more expensive! Yes, but you do get the added benefit of a guided, tour.
Yes. I''m sure it''s very interesting but it does still seem to be quite pricey for our students.
Um ... Also, I should tell you that if you want to come as a group, you''ll need to buy the tickets in advance. Right. Look... I think we''ll just come down on our own.
Can I give you a word of advice? Yes. Sure!
Well... for S4 you can buy a copy of the guidebook and that basically has all the information in it that you need. It has a full plan of the aquarium and information on all the different fish. Oh, what a good idea! Yes, you can get a copy at the gift shop here. Do you know where that is? Is it near the entrance to the building? No ... not exactly at the entrance. It''s actually beside the cafe. Oh. I think I know where you mean. Thanks. 1 might pop down this afternoon and pick one up and then 1 can give the students my own little tour. What time do you close tonight?
    Recording scripts

Good morning! Golden Wheels car rentals. How can I help you? Yes, good morning. I''d like to make a booking for a car. please. Can I just get your name, sir? Yes. Frank Moorcroft. Could you spell that please? Yes. Frank F-R-A-N-K Moorcroft M-double 0 -R-C.-R-O-F-T. And the address? My home address? Yes. please. Wc need a home address. OK. It''s number 26. Lake Road. Richmond. Right... and could I get your home telephone number there? Yes. Sure. Well... the area code is zero-two, and the number is ... let me think... three-three, no, sorry. I haven''t learned this number yet, urn, it''s three-six-eighi-seven-four-five-dQublezerQ. Thank you. And do you have a current licence, sir?
Yes, I do. But it''s not an Australian licence. I haven''t had time to get that organised since I arrived here.
Oh ... well, you do need an Australian one if
    you''re living in this country.
Oh. but I have an international licence. That
    should be OK, shouldn''t it?
Oh. that''ll be fine. We''ll just need to see it
when you pick up the car. Right, now what
kind of car were you looking for?
Well... I''ve got my wife and our three
children with me and quite a lot of luggage
    so...
So you''ll need a station wagon or a ... I don''t mind what make it is. but I''d like a four-door car... it''s much easier with the kids, or maybe even something larger. Well, if you go up to a six-seater. you''ll be into the next price bracket. No thanks.
And when do you need the vehicle?
Well, I''d like to pick it up in the morning, if
    that''s possible.
Not a problem. Let me just note that on the computer. Collect... car... on the ... 23rd ... of June.
No. Tomorrow''s the 24th of lune. not the 23rd.
Oh. of course, it is. I''m sorry.
    And what''s the rental cost?
Well, the rate is S70 a day if you have it for
more than three days. Otherwise it''s S90 a
    day.
We''ll need it for a week.
    Well, then it''ll be $70 a day ... That''s S490 all
    up.
And where would you like to collect the car. sir? At our Melbourne city branch? No. Were arriving by plane so we''d like to pick it up from the airport. Yes, certainly. At approximately what time? The flight gets in at 11.00 in the morning, so by the time we''ve collected our bags. I''d say we''d need the car at around lunchtime. Right. I''ll make sure it''s available for you then. And do you require any other special equipment? Maps? GPS? That sort of thing? Yes, actually, we do. Thanks for reminding me. We have a nvo-year-old so she needs a child''s seat. Can you organise that? Certainly can. I''ll see that there''s one in the car for you.
And what about insurance? Is the car fully insured?
You''re partially covered, but we do recommend that you lake out extra cover, in case you have an accident. Otherwise you''ll have to pay the first SI .000 of any repairs. What do you think?
Oh ... I suppose I''d better have the extra insurance. Belter to be safe than sorry! Ciood idea. I''ll get thai organised for you too.
