The word health can be used in a number of ways. In the past, health was only the absence of disease or illness. Today, though, health has a broader meaning. These improvements in health con***ions mean that not only can you now enjoy a better life, but you also have a greater chance of having a longer life. Controlling diseases has increased the life expectancy in the United States. Generally, people born more recently have higher life expectancies. Since 1900, the life expectancy in the United States has increased by more than 27 years. It has increased from 47 years for those born in 1900 to 74 years 1981.

Today we tell about visiting places to enjoy the natural environment or ecology. This kind of holiday vacation is called ecotourism.

We begin our holiday in the northeastern United States. We are in the town of Bar Harbor, Maine. We have paid money to take a three-hour trip on a large boat. We will be traveling several kilometers off the coast to look for whales. We hope to see several kinds of whales -- the huge humpback, the finback and the smaller minke.

It was such an exciting time of the year, for me especially. Christmas was just around the corner, the signs of which were already appearing at the malls, and my baby shower was just a week away. Mom was worried about how many people would actually come, considering Christmas was so close. She had worked so hard on planning the perfect baby shower for her first grandchild. She was so tickled, I laughed just watching her trip all over herself planning it.
She had really hoped I would find out the gender of the baby so she could have a pink or blue shower, whichever was applicable. She also wanted to include that tidbit of information within the invitations; at both of her showers she had received a lot of boy items, and of course, she had had two girls.
I knew Mom had gone over her budget on the shower, especially with Christmas right around the corner. I made her promise that she would not buy a shower gift in ad***ion to all she had done. I was worried about the money, but I also had another reason. I had not found out if it would be a boy or a girl, and I wanted Mom to be the one to pick out the special "coming-home outfit" for my child.
December nineteenth, what a day it had been! I will never forget that day or that date. I felt like I had been opening presents for hours, and what wonderful presents I had received. The generosity of my family and friends overwhelmed me. As I replaced the top of the box on what I thought was the last gift, I was handed one more. I hadn''t seen that one. Where had it been? It wasn''t wrapped with tra***ional baby shower paper; it was wrapped with beautiful Christmas paper adorned with angels singing hymns, the words written in gold so delicately on the paper. There was no gift tag attached, but there was a Christmas card. "To my daughter . . . ," it read. Mom had promised not to buy a shower gift, but I had said nothing about a Christmas gift! I gave her one of those "I''m going to kill you" looks, and she just sat there, smugly smiling.
"This one is from my mom," I announced as I opened the gift. Inside was a quilt. I tried to smile as I held it up for all to see, hoping Mom couldn''t see my face. She would know my smile wasn''t genuine; she could read me like a good book, cover to cover. The quilt was not very pretty, you see. It was not a "baby quilt." It wasn''t made of pink, blue and yellow materials; it didn''t have bunnies or bears. It was just a patchwork quilt sewn of materials that were of all different colors and patterns. Holding the quilt up, I noticed a note tucked in the bottom of the box.
Not realizing the note was intended to be private, I set the quilt aside, picked up the note and began reading it. Mom had made the quilt for me. The unmatched materials were remnants of my life she had saved over the years. She had cut swatches of material from items dating back to my first Christmas dress and as current as the shirt I wore to the doctor the day I found out I was finally pregnant. She had accumulated "patches" of my life for all those years to make this quilt for my child.
By the time I finished reading Mom''s letter telling of the "patch" of her old robe - I remembered it well; it was fleece and I used to insist she wear it so I could lay my head on it when she rocked me - and the "patch" of Dad''s flannel shirt I used to put on after my bath, and each and every other "patch" and its meaning, there was not a dry eye in the dining room. I picked up the quilt and held it against me and I cried. To think, just seconds before I had thought it ugly. It was beautiful. It was the most beautiful quilt I had ever seen. This quilt was made of my life and with my mother''s love. She had sewn her love into every stitch. To think my mom could sew!
The quilt now hangs on my son''s wall. It is a reminder of my life, my mother''s love and the wonderful Christmas present I received at my baby shower.

WORLD OF BABIES

About four million babies are born each year in the United States. Some mothers give birth at home. But most babies are born in hospitals or birthing centers.
Tra***ionally, new parents might have read a book or two about babies. But most of their advice probably came from their own parents.
Today the newest, and smallest, Americans are at the heart of many industries. Some needs are still the same. Babies still need diapers to cover their bottoms. But diapers are just one thing on the shopping list.
Babies and young children are big business. They have many needs, judging by one book from Parents Magazine. The book is called ?oParents Baby Gear: Everything You Need to Clothe, Feed, Transport, Protect, Entertain and Care for Your Baby from Birth to Age Three."
There is enough advice to fill more than one hundred seventy pages, from the right clothes to the right toys to the right car safety seats. There is even advice about how to choose a three-wheeled bicycle.
Parents now have more choices of equipment to help keep their child safe. One example is the baby monitor. This device lets a parent listen to a child sleeping or playing in another part of the house.
Another example is the automobile safety seat. In the past, babies often rode in the arms of adults. Or they wore adult seat belts.
Now, all fifty states require that babies under eighteen months of age ride in safety seats to protect them. Some states require special seats for children up to a few years old.
There are booster seats for older children who are still not big enough to wear seat belts.
Safety seats have reduced the number of children killed or injured in road accidents. But special care is needed to make sure that the safety seat is placed correctly in a vehicle.
There is no shortage of advice about pregnancy and raising children. Radio and television programs and Web sites provide all kinds of advice. There are many books, magazines and videos. Parents can get suggestions from publications with names like ?oParents,? ?oParent and Child,? ?oParenting? and ?oExceptional Parenting.?
A number of magazines in the United States began as small publications created at home by mothers. These women wanted to share information about having and raising children.
Two teachers from the Washington, D.C., area started one such a publication in nineteen eighty-two. Deborah Benke and Ann Byrne each had young children at the time. They and some friends produced the first copies of Washington Parent from their homes.
Educators, doctors and mental health experts wrote stories about caring for babies and children. Each month, someone produced a list of local events of interest to families. Soon libraries and stores asked for copies. So did doctors offices and hospitals.
Over time, Washington Parent kept growing. Today, this publication started by friends is thick with stories, color pictures and advertisements.
Not all publications for parents were started by mothers. In nineteen seventy-nine, Jack Bierman became interested in establishing a parents magazine for the Los Angeles area. At the time, Mister Bierman was studying journalism and heading a college newspaper. He was not a father yet. But he said friends with children showed him how hard it was for parents to get important safety advice.
The next year, he and other writers started a publication. It was called Pony Ride: The Magazine for Parents in Southern California. It started small. It had just eleven pages. Mister Bierman had ten thousand copies published. He and his other writers took copies to libraries, stores and offices of children?Ts doctors.
But there were still copies left. So Jack Bierman placed the remaining ones on cars. He knew that many of the cars belonged to parents. How did he know? He chose the parking area of the Los Angeles Zoo.
In nineteen eighty-three, Pony Ride was renamed. It took a more businesslike name: L.A. Parent. Two years later, Mister Bierman and other publishers established a trade group, Parenting Publications of America.
More than one hundred local publications in the United States, Canada and Australia belong to this organization. The group brings publishers together to develop guidelines for their industry. Jack Bierman also created an organization that offers suggestions about children?Ts products.
Children also have lots they can read. The Children?Ts Book Council, a trade group, says four thousand to five thousand new children''s books are published in the United States each year. These include picture books and young adult literature, and everything in between.
Two books that have been popular for many years are ?oPat the Bunny? and "Goodnight Moon." "Pat the Bunny," by Dorothy Kunhardt, contains soft material that feels like a real rabbit.
