This guy is trying to do smt at the lowest cost possible :-)
But everything comes with a price. In order to really "master" a language, you need to "drown" yourself into that language environment. That is, to temporarily forget your native or natural speaking habits to indulge in a new world of culture.
What you can do if you cant go to USA or Canada (much the same accent) is watch Yankees saying and imitate that.
CNN and other media is a good source. But trying to figure out which accent is "pure" american one is really problematic.

    Is this so???
Speaking with American accent means one should sound like a native American speaking? What r you talking about here?
This time you''re overconfident Not everyone can have totally American accent with having no accent from your own language. Don''''t ever think you are able to mock them...you don''t even know it if you''''re being mocked, so be careful!
That''s why there are differences between those who don''t and who do? not only in the way they speak, but also in their living experiences.
However, as a matter of fact, even though one has been in America for several years,it''s not certain that he can speak well! For those, I wonder why they are even there!
    Peace everybody!

Thankx for the ****load of your accent-adopting exeperiences but remember diff. people place diff. values on things. Some think they must get the best of IT skills before they ever make any effort to improve their accent, some wish to do cooking extremely well before they can think of doing anything else. Some think English is the last thing in life they spend much time on. A great many go to America NOT just to study English, because in their opinion, English is just nothing as compared to other skills that they need to get that shall change their status, like IT skills that help them get a better job, etc... Don''''t ever try to think that everbody else places the same value on English as students majoring in English. Are you blind to this fact???? So it''''s completely fine if one can''''t adopt AE after studying in the US for several years but if one has learned loads of other important things like living experiences, fresh and new knowledge, etc.... Remember English is just one thing, one thing out of mountains of other things to do in life... So it can''''t be as important as nearly all of you assume, though it''''s very important ''''cause it helps you through the maze of knowledge, etc... It''''s completely outrageous to see sb getting proud for nothing but just English,... completely outrageous...
Are you really blind to the fact that English is just one out of thousands of subjects one ever has to learn in a life???? IT, biochemistry, literature, cooking, drinking, ****ing, etc.....

    To love_undercover_xxxx,
Please forgive my old pal, devastated, for being too touchy and volatile. He sometimes takes things personally though he possesses a number of different handles/nicknames. He''s learning vocabulary to prepare for some standardized test and one of his methods is using the words he''s learned on this Club to master them. I''m not sure if he wants to impress anyone but THAT is a very effective way to master new words. Another thing about this guy is that he knows a lot yet enough to preach English, therefore he chose to either verbally attack or challenge cool members who are/have been to English speaking countries to sharpen his skills AND somehow satisfy his ego. However, he CAN be a nice guy who''s willing to help people around. The Club would be quite boring without him around and I''m getting sad as I knew that he might be leaving very soon.Anyway, personally I think he shouldn''t have been so rude with you like that. He made a mistake and I hope you forgive him for making that stupid mistake.
P.S: Come on, everyone, peace on earth and on the Club please! We are hear to learn, to make friends and to have fun, NOT to fight! Unity will set you free and make our Club stronger than ever. Cheers.

Personally i dun think dat CNN is a good source of "vivid American English" ''coz the language is standardised be4 being broadcast. de least formal source on TV may be movies (esp. those about the American society / lifestyle), i recommend

To devastated: I completely disagree with ur opinion. To me, u hve overemphasized on learning English as a subject of studying. U should know dat when u r an Eng speaking country, u learn English very naturally i.e. u even dun know dat u r learning E: u got 2 know daily-used words (then ur voc. is widened), u get familiar to expressions (then listening skill is upgraded). Then those words n expressions easily come 2 de tip of ur tongue, ready 2 B expressed out (speaking skill). Remember, all this happens naturally and invisibly. Thus, it''s no doubts 2 say that one''s English competency develops notably after a short time living in an E speaking country (living, not studying E. of course when studying E there , it''s much better because grammar n de writing skill receive more focus).
Even at the very meaning of the word "learning E", Eng-learning isnt a subj dat requires much time and energy. Obviously, u learn when native speakers correct ur mis-usage, from reapplying native speakers'' words n expressions to familiar situations/contexts, from automatically replacing ur way of speaking with that of the native speaker and so on.
In short, u shouldnt compare English with "thousands of subjects one ever has to learn in a life" and try to prove a silly saying that one cant have good (or master) American English after such a long time as 2 years or some
