Indian Navy received second Talwat class frigate "Trishul" in June 25th,2003.
    FREGATE INS ''TRISHUL''
    Press-Release 25 June 2003
Today Baltiysky Zavod, JSC is commissioning frigate ''Trishul'', the second ship of Project 11356 built by the shipyard for Indian Navy.
Commissioning of three new frigates, which are classified as ''Escort Ships'' in the Russian Navy, does not only enhance India''s defensive potential at sea, but also dramatically effects the layout of powers in Asia. The multipolar world enabled the Indo-Chinese countries to act as independent regional powers, which at times resulted in open confrontation. Therefore, commissioning of ad***ional combatants will level the ground for the conflicting parties and guarantee stability in the Indian Ocean.
    Stages of Construction
24 September 1999 the keel of INS ''Trishul'' was laid on the slipway of Baltiysky Zavod, JSC, and after one year and two months, on 24 November 2000 the frigate was launched.
In August 2002 the Trishul underwent Builder Sea Trials. The first stage of the trials took place in the Gulf of Finland in the range of the Leningrad Naval Base. Thereafter the frigate went to Baltiysk (Kalinigrad Region), where the performance of ship''s propulsion, machinery and weapon systems were tested. The Sea Training of the Indian crew was combined with the Builder Sea Trials.
As opposed to the leadship ''Talwar'', the sea trials program of ''Trishul'' was considerably curtailed. A number of weapon systems represented as prototype models on the first frigate are classified as serially produced on the second one. Serial production codes were assigned *****ch systems as Computer Aided Action Information Organisation system (CAIO) ''Trebovaniye-M'', Anti-submarine Warfare Fire Control system "Purga-11356", Helicopter traversing gear, and other systems.
In late 2002 the ''Trishul'' underwent the State Committee Trials aimed at checking the compliance of all systems with the project technical specification. On 03 April 2003 Director General, Baltiysky Zavod, JSC Oleg Shulyakovsky and Frigate ''Trishul'' State Committee Chairman, Captain 1st Rank Vyacheslav Timoshenko signed the Report on completion of the ship''s State Committee Trials thus clearing the ship for the Delivery and Acceptance Trials, which were successfully completed on 7 May this year.
The Trishul crest The Crest of a ship, akin to the ''Coat of Arms'' of the Army or an ''Insignia'' of the Air Force, epitomises the spirit and ethos of the ship. The word ''Trishul '' finds its origin from the Sanskrit word ''Tri'' meaning three and ''Shul'' meaning a spiked weapon. Consequently, this three-edged spiked weapon resembles a trident. Indian mythology has it that the ''Trishul'' was a powerful and all pervasive weapon of the Lord Shiva, that was effectively used by him to ward off evil. The ''Trishul'' as a weapon has been used ever since then to symbolise the victory of truth and righteousness over evil. According to mythology, surviving the onslaught of the Trishul is impossible. The Crest of the ship depicts a strong arm rising out from under the sea, holding the powerful ''Trident''. The mythological truth of the weapon, when extended to INS Trishul makes the ship powerful in all three dimensions - air, surface and sub-surface. A warship that will be feared for her lethality and brutal power.
    Frigate''s Salient Features and Weapons
The frigate''s mission spans the entire spectrum of naval warfare in all three dimensions of battle space - Air, Surface and Sub- Surface, in Littoral and Blue Waters operations both as a single unit and as a consort ship in a naval task force.
    The ship''s main dimension are: length - 124.8 m, beam - 15.2 m, standard displacement - 3620 t, full displacement - 4035 t, draft at standard displacement - 4.5 m.
The frigate''s main attack weapon is the Surface-to-Surface Missile (SSM) system "Club-N". It is designed to engage surface ships of various classes and types in heavy EW (Electronic Warfare) environment and in the face of intense enemy fire.
The standard set of "Club-N" system is armed with 8 homing missiles with the combat high-explosive semi-armour piercing warhead. The main artillery force of the ship is a 100-mm gun A-190 providing the punch to engage sea and air targets. The target designation sensor suite for A-190 is the firing control system "Puma". It includes a three-coordinate acquisition radar and an opto-electronic channel. "Puma" is capable of target search, acquisition and tracking in the automatic mode.
    The commanding officer
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 Jan 77, Captain SPS Cheema, NM is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla. A specialist in Missiles and Gunnery, during his many years of service in the Navy, he has commanded INS Nishank a 1241 RE class of ship, the missile Corvette INS Khanjar and the Mauritius Coast Guard Ship Vigilant.
