Wounded Marines sit in front of the altar of an An Hoa Church after their unit came under a Communist mortar attack 5/16 while trying to reach the besieged American outpost at Con Thien. The church, located two miles south of Con Thien, was being used by Leathernecks of the 1st battalion, 9th Marines, to house their dead and wounded as the push continued to break through the Communist ring
Con Thien có phải là Cồn Tiên không?

March -16- 1968- marked the anniversary of one of most gruesome acts committed by the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War--
    [IMG]
the My Lai massacre,by United States soldiers of as many as 500 unarmed civilians. Newspaper published photographs of the My Lai massacre in December 1969. It was prosecuted for "The quality of lacking" but misbehavior against Move quickly later dropped. Military mission was clear: search and destroy the My Lai.

Typical soldiers in the Army of the Republic of South Vietnam.

These were the folks we were trying to protect from "Communist Aggression" from the North (or so we were told). The real story is much more complicated. Safe to say that this was a civil war between North and South Vietnam and like quick sand we stuck our foot in and got swallowed up.

The fellows with the black pants are *********. Otherwise known as "Charlie". The term ********* is short for Vietnamese Communist Guerrillas. Generally these were South Vietnamese communists and nationalists who wanted foreigners out of their country.

You can tell these were NVA soldiers as opposed to *********.
These fellows were dressed in uniforms and sometimes wore pith helmets. ********* usually wore the tra***ional Vietnamese black outfits made of silk. Many of the NVA were hardened veterans who fought against the French in the French Indo-China War. Some were actually WW2 vets. Some of these soldiers had AK47 assault rifles in ad***ion to the Romanian made SKS. In 1966 the AK put us at a disadvantage because all we (advisiors) were using were M2 carbines and M1 Garrand

They were killed in a battle near An Khe in the Republic of South Vietnam. These were worthy adversaries that we had to respect. Remember, they defeated the most powerful nation on earth in a war of attrition.

"Body Count" was part of the what we had to do to "prove" to the American press that we were doing our job.

Only problem was even after 12 hours of laying in the hot humid jungle the corpses began to stink something fierce. A pair of rubber gloves from graves registration also helped in picking up the decayed bodies.
