    Argentine Football In Capable Hands
    Tuesday 28th January 2003
    By Danny Kazandjian
Argentine football is in pretty good hands if the evidence of this past few days is anything to go by. The Under-20s, who on Sunday became the first South American side to secure their place in March's world championships, have all but been crowned champions of South America. A victory in their final match, against Colombia tonight, will ensure that Argentina head to the United Arab Emirates in March as kings of South America.
Then there is the full national side, who like the Under-20s were the first South American side to qualify for the 2002 World Cup. Marcelo Bielsa and his men are about to embark on a regional tour, which kicks off this Friday in Honduras, with a squad of domestic-based players top-heavy with talent.
Bielsa, who became the first Argentina coach to retain his post after failing to win the World Cup, was criticized last summer for relying too heavily on Argentina's foreign legion - of Bielsa's first choice XI, only River Plate's Ariel Ortega played in Argentina - following the tournament favourite's first round knock-out. It is a testament to Argentina's depth of talent that this locally based squad looks every bit as attractive as the emigre e***ion.
For Crespo, Veron and Batistuta read Federico Insua, Andres D'Alessandro and Leandro Romagnoli. They are members of a youthful and enthusiastic squad, heavily sprinkled with veterans of Argentina's triumphant World Youth Championship victory two years ago, that heads on its travels relaxed and buoyant; much like their coach.
Hey? There must be some mistake there. Bielsa is no laid back soul. On the contrary, known periodically as 'El Loco' or 'the man in the iron mask', he is renowned as a slightly strange man. Introverted, stiff, nervous. It is an image that the ex-Newell's and Velez Sarsfield boss is keen to shake off. "I don't know why they say I'm a stiff technician," he told Argentine daily Clarin yesterday, before adding: "the players don't say that, they have liberty."
Stiff he insists he ain't, yet even now Bielsa remains undeterred that his tactical dispositions during the World Cup were not at fault. When questioned about his refusal to play both Crespo and Batigol together Bielsa is not for turning: "The majority of goals in the world are originated in play from the wings. And therefore I prefer to have presence on the right and left. I maintain that to play two centre-forwards, such as Batistuta and Crespo reduces the play on the flanks. The elimination in the World Cup has nothing to do with the rigid distribution of players on the pitch".
Maybe not, but the same 3-4-2-1 formation remains, just as it did in Saitama when the Albiceleste defeated Japan 2-0 in the first match since Bielsa's surprising reprieve. The same attacking policy that served Argentina so well in the World Cup qualifiers - "Argentina attacks with six players," declares Bielsa - is adhered to, with newcomers such as D'Alessandro maintaining that, with Bielsa, "we are learning many things." Argentine football is in good hands.

Batigol Gets Last Shot At The Big Time
    Tuesday 21st January 2003
    By James Ellaby
Argentinean legend Gabriel Batistuta arrived at Internazionale today, ready for his final fling in Serie A, where he has been one of the biggest stars of the last decade, most famously with Fiorentina.
'Batigol', as he is known around the world, is now 33 years old and has struggled to maintain his high standards in the last two seasons, which is why Roma are willing to let him leave on loan until the end of the season. He joins Inter as cover for injured compatriot Hernan Crespo.
As he was unveiled by Inter, he paid tribute to club president Massimo Moratti, and promised to pay him back in trophies: "I'm here thanks to Moratti. I feel as if I need to repay him for the great esteem in which he has always held me. I have joined Inter with the clear idea of winning the Scudetto. That is all that I am thinking about. They have signed me so that I can help them to win honours."
Batistuta had been linked with moves away from Italy, to England or Turkey, but now claims that he would not have left Roma to go anywhere other than the Nerazzuri: "Only Inter had the ability to convince me to leave the Giallorossi in mid-season. I had other offers but I turned them down until Moratti gave me the chance to win the League with Inter. I've come close to joining this club in the past but I'm here now."
Despite his poor goalscoring form in the last two seasons and in the 2002 World Cup, Batistuta should still have a few more years at the top and was keen to stress that: "Maybe time is not on my side but I still have the enthusiasm of a youngster who wants to prove himself, and evidently there are people at Inter that understand football. People who have decided to ignore the words of my critics."
Batistuta's career started at home in Argentina, where he played for Newell's Old Boys, River Plate and Boca Juniors, before moving to Serie A with Fiorentina in 1991. He spent nine seasons at La Viola, and established himself as one of the world's top strikers, scoring 168 goals in 269 games. At international level, he has been just as prolific, netting 57 times in 78 matches.
He left Fiorentina as they began to plummet towards oblivion, but after a good first season at Roma, his powers seem to have been on the wane, and he is no longer a first choice there. This loan spell is vital for Batigol if he is going to extend his time at the top. The clubs who were after him this month are not of the level he has been playing at in his career, and only a return to form in his time at the San Siro will convince the big names to come back in for him

    Argentina Edge Violent Megaclasico
    Friday 24th January 2003
    By Danny Kazandjian
Argentines may be green with envy when they glance at Brazil?Ts five World Cups, but when it comes to youth level it is the famous blue and white shirts that have the edge. Argentina, a winner of a record four Youth World Championships and three of the last four tournaments continued their regional predominance over their bitter rivals last night in the Under-20s South American Championships.
In a bad tempered, niggling affair in the Domingo Burgueno Miguel stadium in Maldonado Hugo Tocalli?Ts side edged the Brazilians 1-0 in world football?Ts ?~megaclasicô?T, the title given to any match between these two passionate adversaries. The victory enabled Argentina to break the three-way tie at the top of the final table and now stands alone above Brazil and Paraguay, who they play tomorrow evening, as group leaders.
The top four sides qualify for the World Youth Championships in the United Arab Emirates which begin in March, and although Brazil are virtually guaranteed of joining Argentina in the Middle East, their hold on any bragging rights has been relinquished. And not just because of the result. The manner of their defeat was comprehensive, with only Argentinâ?Ts profligacy in front of goal preventing total rout. Argentina, who have improved game by game as the tournament has progressed (in the first stage they sneaked two 1-0 wins on the back of mediocre performances before losing to lowly Venezuela) were the best team and deserved the victory.
Individually and collectively, the Albiceleste were a level above their opponents. Brazil, having breezed through the first phase by scoring 15 goals without conceding, singularly failed to unlock Argentinâ?Ts defence, led by Gonzalo Rodriguez, with Argentine keeper Gustavo Eberto not called upon to make a single save in the first half.
Argentina turned in a virtually perfect first half, controlling the ball and the tempo of the play, relegating the indecisive Brazilians to a secondary role, one of chasing and harrying. Carlos Tevez and Fernando ****naghi led the line superbly, while the match-winning Marcelo Carrusca on the left was the best player on the field. In the middle of the park, the combative Mascherano and Colace turned the midfield into a prohibited zone for their Selecao counterparts.
Frustrated by their inability to gain a foothold on the game, the Brazilians turned to violence. In the first half three were booked, with Dagoberto and Wendel only remaining on the field due to the Paraguayan refereê?Ts leniency.
In the second period Argentina lost some of its clarity, but just as Brazil were able to win a little more possession, they found themselves a goal down when Carrusca powered in from his left flank and shot past Jefferson in the Brazilian goal.
Towards the end of the game Brazil?Ts frustration cost them one player when Felipe Melo lashed out at Tevez, and a second when Wendel received his second caution. As Argentine daily Clarin put it, Brazil, not knowing how to win, showed that they did not know how to lose either.
