    Sergiu Comissiona
    Music Director and Conductor
Acknowledged as one of the most experienced and dynamic conductors of our time, Sergiu Comissiona returns for his seventh summer with the Asian Youth Orchestra, fresh from a season of critically acclaimed concerts across the United States and around the world.

Named Music Director and Conductor of the Asian Youth Orchestra in 1997, succeeding Yehudi Menuhin, Maestro Comissiona is also Music Director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Chief Conductor of the Orquesta Sinfonica de R.T.V.E., the radio and television orchestra of Madrid.

His 17 years as Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony were marked by innovative programming, compelling performances and enthusiastic audience response. A highly popular figure in Baltimore to this day, Maestro Comissiona is also Conductor Laureate of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Until recently he was Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1978-1982 he was Music Director of the American Symphony Orchestra. Previous music directorships include the Houston Symphony and Gothenberg Orchestra of Goteborg, Sweden.

In ad***ion to appearances at many of the world's most prestigious festivals, including Tanglewood, Aspen, Saratoga and Wolf Trap, Sergiu Comissiona has conducted frequently at the New York City Opera, both as guest conductor and Music Director.

A prolific recording artist, Maestro Comissiona has conducted many acclaimed recordings, mostly with the Baltimore and Vancouver Symphony orchestras. He can be heard on Deutsche Grammophon, Philips, London and the Pro Arte labels with the London Symphony, l'Orchestra de la Suisse Romande, the Houston Symphony and the Israel Chamber Orchestra, which he founded.

A strong proponent of music education, he is an honorary member of the Swedish Academy of Music and founder of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's national competition for young American conductors.

Sergiu Comissiona and his wife Robinne, both born in Romania, became American citizens on July 4, 1976, at a special Bicentennial ceremony at Fort McHenry on the Baltimore harbor.
    Leila Josefowicz
    Violin Soloist

At the age of 22, Leila Josefowicz has won the hearts of audiences around the world with her dynamic virtuosity and honest, fresh approach to the violin repertoire.

She came to national attention in 1994 when she made her Carnegie Hall debut performing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. Her debut recording of the Tchaikovsky and the Sibelius concertos followed immediately on Philips Classics. Since then, she has appeared with many of the world's most prestigious orchestras including Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, London Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus and Orchestre National de France. She has collaborated with such eminent conductors as Sergiu Comissiona, Seiji Ozawa, Valery Gergiev, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Charles Dutoit and Kurt Sanderling.

Recent engagements in North America have included appearances with the St. Louis, Atlanta, Toronto, Detroit, Montreal, Houston, National, Dallas, Cincinnati and Vancouver symphony orchestras, a tour with the Brandenburg Ensemble, and recitals in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and at the Kennedy Centre. Equally in demand in Europe, she has recently performed in Vienna, Berlin, Zurich and London, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Yuri Temirkanov. Her recital scheduled included concerts at the Concertgebouw and in London's Wigmore Hall.

At the invitation of the Osaka Festival in 1995, Ms. Josefowicz's first Japan tour included sold-out performances in Tokyo and Osaka. In 1998 she returned to Asia performing in Korea, Japan and China, making her debut with the NHK Symphony Orchestra.

An exclusive Philips Classics recording artist, her debut recording was followed in 1996 by an album of unaccompanied violin works by Bartok, Kreisler, Ysaye, Ernst and Paganini, Solo. Bohemian Rhapsodies, a collection of violin works with orchestra was released in 1997. Her first sonata recording, For the End of Time, was released the following year. Her most recent recording, released in February 2000, includes the Mendelssohn and Glazunov concertos with the Montreal Symphony, Charles Dutoit conducting.

Leila Josefowicz has been featured on many television programs in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. At the age of 10, her performances on the NBC television special America's Tribute to Bob Hope brought her immediate recognition. Other appearances have included a PBS special Evening at Pops with John Williams and the Boston Pops. She has also performed at evenings honoring Leonard Bernstein and Sir Georg Solti.

Ms. Josefowicz is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music where she studied with Jaime Laredo and Jascha Brodsky. She studied chamber music at Curtis with Felix Galimir and participated at several Marlboro Music Festivals. In recent seasons she has collaborated with Martha Argerich, Tom Hampson, Jaime Laredo, Sylvia McNair, Andras Schiff, Mitsuko Uchida and Andre Watts.

A recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1994, Leila Josefowicz performs on the 1739 "Ebersolt" Guarnerius del Gesu violin. She resides in Florida with her husband, the conductor Kristjan Jarvi, and their son, Lukas.

    Cecile Licad
    Pianist

The artistry of Cecile Licad is a blend of daring musical instincts and the superb training of a "musician's musician." Her natural talent was honed by three of the greatest performer/pedagogues of our times: Rudolph Serkin, Seymour Lipkin and Mieczyslaw Horszowski (all at the famed Curtis Institute of Music). Serkin became a strong mentor and father figure as well as teacher. Listening to the fourteen-year old Cecile perform, he remarked, "When I was her age, I could not touch what she is doing."
Ms. Licad began her piano studies at the age of three with her mother, Rosario Licad, in her native Philippines, and later studied with Rosario Picazo. At the age of seven she made her debut as soloist with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Philippines.

Ms. Licad's large repertoire as an orchestral soloist ranges from the classical works of Mozart and Beethoven, to the romantics and moderns: Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Schumann and Rachmaninoff; Debussy, Ravel, Shostakovich, Prokofieff and Bartok. She has been welcomed by audiences across North America, Europe and the Far East.

As one of the youngest musicians to receive the prestigious Leventritt Gold Medal in 1981, Ms. Licad won immediate international recognition. She has appeared regularly with orchestra such as the Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, National Symphony, London Symphony, London Philharmonic, Bayerisches Rundfunk Orchestra de la Suisse Romande. She has also performed with the orchestra of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Cincinnati. In Asia, Ms. Licad has performed with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Tokyo's NHK Symphony and her native Philippine Philharmonic. Among the conductors with whom she has collaborated are Claudio Abbado, Andrew Davis, Charles Dutoit, Kurt Masur, Sir Neville Marriner, Zubin Mehta, Eugene Ormandy, Seiji Ozawa, Andre Previn, Mstislav Rostropovich, Gerard Schwarz, Sir Geroge Solti, Michael Tilson-Thomas, David Zinman and Pinchas Zukerman.

As passionate a chamber musician as she is a recitalist and orchestral soloist, Cecile Licad has made television appearances with Mstislav Rostropovich, and has performed with ensembles such as the New York Chamber Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Guarneri Quartet, Takács Quartet, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and Music from Marlboro. During the 1998-99 season, she appeared as guest soloist on tour with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in Leipzig, Hamburg, Dusseldorf and Cologne, among other European cities. Ms. Licad has performed in recital with Murray Perahia, Peter Serkin and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg with whom she has appeared at Lincoln Center, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, and Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center.

Ms. Licad's summer festival appearances have included Tanglewood, the International Music Festival of Seattle, Mostly Mozart Festival (in both New York and Tokyo) and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.

As a recording artist, Ms. Licad has recently released a new CD of three works by Ravel: Le tombeau de Couperin, Gaspard de la Nuit, and Sonatine, on the Music Masters label. Previous solo recordings for Sony Classical include a disc featuring Schumann's Carnaval, Papillions and Toccata in C Major, which was released to critical acclaim. Another Sony CD which reached the top of the Billboard charts was Ms. Licad's debut recording of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 in c minor, and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini in with the Chicago Symphony conducted by Claudio Abbado. For Angel/EMI, she has recorded a sonata album with Nadja Salerno-Sonnenbery. Her most recent recording is a CD of the Chopin Etudes, Op. 25, which joins an earlier all-Chopin CD and her top of the Billboard classical chart disc featuring Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Saint-Saens' Piano Concerto No. 2 with Andre Previn conducting the London Philharmonic, which won the Grand Prix du Disque Frederic Chopin.

During the past year, Ms. Licad returned with her son, Otavio, to live in New York after years of residing in Europe. Her performances retain the hallmarks of her early youth - boldness with great sensitivity - and she now possesses a new standard of excellence and refinement.
