RA position at the University of Akron:

Fund: $13,000 initially, and $16,000 after completion of Candidacy Examination. Ad***ionally, Free Tuition (tuition fees will be remitted)

Time Commitment: Minimum THREE YEAR commitment is required to complete a Ph.D.
Start Date: January 2008 or soon after

Academic Requirements:
Masters Degree in Structural Engineering/Concrete Materials along with a Bachelorõ?Ts Degree in Civil Engineering. Potential students with no Masters Degree will also be considered if they are within the top three to five in their respective classes

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) rehabilitation, strengthening and related
structural work

Dr. Ying?Ts research on urban/regional air quality is focused on the following areas:
(1) Urban/Regional air quality modeling ?" Advanced air quality models are used to study the emission, transportation, chemical transformation of airborne pollutants. Current research is focused on the study formation of secondary nitrate and organics under different emission, geographical and meteorological con***ions to improve model predictions. Process analysis tools are incorporated into the air quality models to gain insights on the contribution of each simulated process to the overall pollutant concentrations.
(2) Source apportionment of airborne particulate matter ?" Advanced source oriented air quality models are used to determine the source contributions to particulate matter and attribute the effect of different sources on visibility, climate change and human health. Correctly and efficiently determining the source contribution to particulate matter is important for policy makers to design efficient emission control strategies.
(3) Parallel Computing - Clustered workstations running GNU/Linux (beowulf system) is used as a powerful and flexible computing environment for the air quality model simulations. More efficient parallel algorithms are developed to accelerate the air quality model calculation.
Research Assistantships
I currently have one research assistantship available for a student interested in working in my research group as part of his Ph.D. degree. Candidates with backgrounds in atmospheric science, and/or environmental engineering are encouraged to apply; Computer programming in a high level language skill is essential. Basic knowleges of UNIX/Linux Operating System, computer hardwares and a flavor of FORTRAN language is desired but not required. Thật ra em thấy sang đến bên này rồi thì ông GS nào, kể cả assistant prof hay các GS tầm cao hơn đều có fund ổn định cả (em chỉ nói đến trường Columbia). Ông nào cũng cần người (khoa Chemical Engineering) và mỗi ông có thể fund đc cho 2-3 người. Tuy nhiên thì demanding của GS rất cao, và em cũng ko nghĩ là sinh viên VN đủ trình độ đáp ứng đc những yêu cầu mấy ông ý cần ngay từ lúc apply. Đó chính là 1 trong những điểm khó khăn nhất (tức là 1-2 năm đầu phải có fund để đi học-có thể xin TA thay vì RA trong thời gian này). Em chỉ nói riêng về Chemical Engineering thôi nhé. Nói lại 1 lần nữa ko các bác lại chửi là em ko biết gì. Bởi vì em thấy trình độ sinh viên mình chưa đủ rộng và bao quát đủ các lĩnh vực mà các GS bên này cần. Thật ra thì ngay cả graduate student bên này cũng ko đủ trình đâu à. Ko biết trong 2 năm tới thì bọn nó có đủ trình độ ko . Thôi em nói bừa, các bác có góp ý gì thì giúp em nhé. Vị trí RA là 1 trong những vị trí available nhất trong university đấy à

Các bác lập ra topic này hay quá, thêm một cơ hội cho mọi người được học tập ở US. Các thông tin trên kia tuy không thật sự đúng với chuyên ngành của em (xém tý nữa thì trúng), nhưng rất hữu ích. Hy vọng sau này sẽ có thêm thông tin và đặc biệt là các kinh nghiệm apply cũng như học tập, NC của các bác đang học bên US. Anyway, thanks.

@Tropical_Jungle: hình như bác TJ đang học civil tại TAMU fải không ạ?
Em cũng là dân civil eng., đang làm Ms về Geotechnical ở Korea, đến cuối 2008 thì xong, và đang định đào tẩu sang US.
Ở Zachry Department of Civil Engineering_TAMU của bác có cái PhD position nào liên quan đến Geotechnical không? Nếu có thì post để lên em apply nhé (chắc là contact thôi chứ apply cũng không kịp ). Em hiện giờ đang là RA cho Prof ở lab, nhưng không biết có giống RA bên US không?

Anh rể em hồi cách nay 9 năm có học ở TAMU,ổng giới thiệu trường này cho em. VÔ xem thấy ngành Master về Marketing của Mays Business School at Texas A&M khá hấp dẫn. Anh/Chị nào biết tin về TA/RA lĩnh vực management thì ới em 1 tiếng trên ttvnol nhé.Em hậu tạ 10 sao Em vẫn đang trong quá trình tìm hiểu thông tin. Chắc năm 2008 mới apply cho khoá 2009.

Tớ không dám chắc về điều này, vì Zachry Department of Civil Engineering ở Texas A&M rất lớn. Xét về qui mô, nó là khoa Civil Engineering lớn nhất nước Mỹ, vậy nên mình ít biết về các division khác. Tuy nhiên, theo tớ nghĩ, ngành Geo- ở A&M không thuộc quản lý của khoa Geoscience thì phải, các ngành liên quan đến địa lý và địa kỹ thuật thuộc 1 khoa riêng và phát triển khá mạnh. Nói vậy thôi tớ không dám sure 100% về điều này, nên thử tìm hiểu thêm xem, tớ cũng sẽ hỏi han, nêu có thông tin gì thêm tớ sẽ post lên đây.
