RAP / RAI Model 300 (USA)
    comparision drawing: 7.62x51mm NATO (.308 Win) and 8.58x71mm (.416-.338)
    Caliber(s): 7.62mm NATO (.308Win) and 8.58x71mm (.338-.416)
    Operation: bolt action, magazine fed
    Barrel: 610 mm (24")
Weight: 5.7 kg w/o magazine and scope base
    Length: ? mm
Feed Mechanism: 5 (7.62) or 4 (8.58) rounds detachable box magazine
The model 300 rifle was developed by team lead by J.Haskins in the 1981 and 1982 as a long-range sniper rifle for US military. It was probably one of the first of purposefully designed sniper weapons, not a rework from existing military, hunting or sporting rifle. Model 300 also served as a testbed for development of the new long-range sniping ammunition, initially known as .416-.338 (metric designation 8.58x71 mm), which latter was refined by Finnish company Lapua-Nammo Oy and one day became the now-famous .338 Lapua (8.6x70mm Lapua), a true long-range number. About 1983, US Military issued a contract for some 125 model 300 rifles (along with the same number of Model 500 .50 caliber rifles). Model 300 rifle did not appear in large numbers, but it must be noted as a forerunner of many modern designs of sniper weapons, an also as a "parent" rifle for a .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge.
The development team of the model 300 (and model 500) during the time worked under the many "labels" - they began the development as a RAP - Research Armament Prototypes company. Latter RAP became RAI - Research Armament Industries. Next it was purchased by the Daisy and became a Daisy Defence Systems, and finally it was bought by the Iver Johnson.
The model 300 rifle is a manually operated, bolt action, magazine fed precision rifle. It uses steel receiver with a rotating bolt. Bolt has three long lugs that locks into receiver walls. Model 300 rifle can use two different cartridges, .308 winchester and .416-.338. To do switch from one caliber to another one must replace the barrel and a bolt head. Heavy, precision barrel is externally fluted and free floated. The stock is fully ajustable and can be easily removed along with the pistol grip to made the rifle more compact for carry and storage. Trigger is also fully ajustable, and rifle required no disassembly to ajust it. Model 300 featured no open sights. Instead, a quick-detachable scope mount was developed, which required no re-zeroing after it was reinstalled. The scope base also featured a range-ajustable mechanism. Model 300 had no forearm and was intended to be used from folding bipod, which was attached to the forward receiver extension, which also contained a "tuning rod", which was used to ajust the point of impact.

Operation: gas operated, short stroke, rotating bolt; semi-automatic
Capacity: 10 round detachable box magazine
    Weight: 4.31kg empty with telescope
    Length: 1225 mm
    Barrel Length: 620 mm
Max Rate of Fire: 30 RPM
Aimed Rate of Fire: 3-5 RPM
Scope Type: PSO-1 with illuminated reticle
Accuracy: less than 2MOA at 600m
SVD was designed not as a standart sniper rifle. In fact, main role of the SVD ir Soviet / Russian Army is to extend effective range of fire of every infantry squad up to 600 meters and to provide special fire support. SVD is a lightweight and quite accurate (for it's class) rifle, cabable of semi-auto fire. First request for new sniper rifle was issued in 1958. In 1963 SVD (Snaiperskaya Vintovka Dragunova, or Dragunov Sniper Rifle) was accepted by Soviet Military. SVD can use any kind of standart 7.62x54R ammo, but primary round is specially developed for SVD sniper-grade cartridge with steel-core bullet. Every infantry squad in the Russian (Soviet) army had one man with SVD.
SVD is extremely reliable in all con***ions, and designed for heavy battles. It has backup ajustable iron sights as a standart option, as well as a bayonet mount (standart AK-47 bayonet type).
Latest modernisation incorporate rugged polymer stock. Also, for mounted and airborne troops developed variant with folding buttsock and shortened barrel (590 mm). New flash hider/muzzle brake also installed.
All modifications of SVD passed many real battle tests during Afghan war as well as many other local conflicts, including latest Chechen wars. SVD was widely used and copied across the former Warshaw pact countries and still in service with Russian Army and many Russian Law Enforcement agencies (as well in oter CIS countries).

    RT-20 Antimateriel Sniper Rifle (Croatia)
RT-20 antimateriel rifle. Note the reactive counter-recoil tube above the barrel.
RT-20 in firing position. Anyone can wonder if the backblast from the reactive counter-recoil tube (above the barrel) won't tear off the shooters' backpack at the moment of fire...
cartridge size comparision: .50 BMG (top) and the 20x110mm Hispano (below)
    Caliber: 20x110mm Hispano
    Operation: manual operated, bolt action
    Barrel: 920 mm
Weight: 19.2 kg with scope and bipod
    Length: 1330 mm
Feed Mechanism: single shot, manual loading
Maximum effective range: about 1800 meters
The RT-20 was developed in the Croatia in the mid-1990s as a pure anti-materiel and anti-armor rifle. The RT-20 name means "Rucni Top, 20mm", that is "Hand Canon, 20mm". It is one of the most powerful anti-materiel rifles fielded by any army in the world today - the only others design roughly comparable to this monster in the terms of the caliber and effectiveness are the South-African NTW-20 rifle and the Finnish Helenius APH-20 (will be posted at this site later). The RT-20 had been successfully deployed during the war in the former Yugoslavia in the second half of the 1990s. It is manufacture by the Croatian company RH-Alan and is officially adopted by Croatian army.
The RT-20 is built around the very powerful 20mm ammunition, originally developed for Hispano Suiza HS404 anti-aircraft round of WW2 vintage. This ammunition is still used in anti-aircraft guns in some countries for AA guns and generally available in HE (explosive) and AP (anti-armor) loadings, both suitable for anti-material roles. The AP loading also can be successfully used against infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers. The 20x110mm round fires the 130 gram (2000 grains) projectile at muzzle velocities about 850 meters per second. This results in high terminal effectiveness but also imposes a serious problem of excessive recoil forces. The 20mm Hispano round generates about 4 times more recoil when fired from 20 kg rifle, compared to .50BMG (12.7x99mm) round, fired from 10kg rifle (such as Barrett M95). To make the recoil more or less bearable by the average shooter, the Croatian designers developed a quite interesting counter-recoil system, that uses a reactive principle. The system consist of the large reactive tube, located above the barrel. The forward end of this tube is connected to the barrel at about its middle point. The rear part of the tube forms the reactive nozzle. When gun is fired, some hot powder gases are fed from the barrel to the reactive tube and back, forming a back-blast with reactive force that cats again the recoil forces. The large muzzle brake further helps to decrease the recoil. This reactive system, once popular in large caliber (about 80 - 100 mm and bigger) recoilless rifles, almost never had been used in such relatively small weapons. This system, while effective in counter-recoil, has some disadvantages, First, it requires some special firing techniques for shooter to avoid damage from backblast. Second, due to the same reason, it hardly can be fired in confined spaces like the small building rooms, and the RT-20 cannot be fired with structures, such as walls, in close proximity to the rear.. Third, the backblast can create ad***ional spots for enemy, giving away the position of the rifle.
The rest of the system is relatively simple. The rotating bolt locks the barrel by three massive lugs. RT-20 is a single-shot rifle and thus have no magazine. The shoulder rest and the pistol handle with trigger are located under the barrel, so rifle is obviously a bullpup. The RT-20 has no open sights, instead it had an telescope optical sight, mounted on the barrel and offset to the left.
Special thanks to Romeo Streinger for pictures and info.

Truvelo .50 sniper rifle (South Africa)
Truvelo .50BMG caliber rifle - single shot version
Truvelo .50BMG caliber rifle - 5 shots magazine fed version
    Caliber(s): 12.7x99 mm - .50 BMG
    Operation: bolt action, manually operated
    Barrel: 950 mm
    Weight: 16 kg
    Length: 1510 mm
Feed Mechanism: single shot or 5 rounds detachable box magazine
This "heavy sniper" or "anti-materiel" rifle was developed by the South African company Truvelo Armory in the late 1990s. Like many other large caliber sniper rifles, this one is intended mostly for counter sniper role and anti-materiel work against unarmored vehicles, installations etc. The claimed accuracy with appropriate ammunition is 1 MOA, effective range is about 1500 meters but bullet could be lethal at much bigger ranges.
Truvelo .50 uses a simple metallic "backbone" on which all other parts are mounted. Massive receiver is made of steel, rotating bolt of the Truvelo design has two frontal locking lugs, and one rear locking lug, pluck ****ing handle that acts as a second rear locking lug for most solid lock. Heavy, free-floated barrel features a large muzzle brake, which is a must-have item when firing powerful ammunition. Truvelo .50 rifle is available in simple single shot configuration or equipped with large removable box magazine that holds 5 rounds for faster practical fire rate.
Rifle has no conventional stock and is intended to be fired from bipod only. The butt is fitted with recoil pad and is mounted on the aluminium alloy "backbone". Ad***ional vertical grip is located under the adjustable cheek pad for more comfortable hold. Rifle has no open sights as a standard, but is equipped with the universal rail / scope mount at the top of the receiver.

Hôm nay giới thiệu tiếp hàng của Nam Phi
20 mm version 14.5 mm version
    Caliber 20 x 83.5 mm MG151 14.5 x 114 mm Russian
    Operation manual bolt action
Barrel length 1000 mm 1220 mm
    Weight 26 kg 29 kg
    Length 1795 mm 2015 mm
Feed Mechanism detachable box magazine, 3 rounds
Maximum effective range 1500+ meters 2300+ meters
This rifle was designed in the early to mid 1990s by South African arms designer Tony Neophytou, who also took its part in designing the Neostead combat shotgun. Initial development was under the Aerotek name, and later the Mechem division of the DENEL Group, a major South African arms manufacturer, purchased all rights for this design. In the 1998 South African National Defense Forces adopted this weapon and began to purchase it in some numbers. It is also offered for export sales. The NTW-20 is a long range anti-materiel rifle, developed to reach out across wide plains of South African landscape and to deliver substantial firepower in a relatively compact, two men portable package. It is available in two versions, 20mm and 14.5mm, and could be easily converted from one variant to another by simple replacement of the barrel, bolt, magazine and scope, which will take about 1 minute in the field con***ions. These two versions had slightly different applications: 20mm version, built around WW2-era German MG-151 aircraft gun round, can deliver high explosive, fragmentation or incendiary shells with good accuracy, so a relatively "soft" targets could be disabled by the blast and / or fragments. When the long range and armor penetration is an issue, the 14.5mm version comes into the play. It is built around another WW2-era round, Soviet 14.5mm high velocity, armor-piercing cartridge, developed for PTRD and PTRS anti-tank rifles and still widely used in Russian KPV / KPVT heavy machine guns on armored cars and in anti-aircraft mounts. While probably not so accurate as the specially developed .50BMG (12.7x99mm) rifles, mostly due to unavailability of the "match grade" ammunition in the 14.5mm and 20mm, NTW-20 offers significantly more terminal effectiveness than any .50BMG rifle / round combination. 20 mm version could be most effective against targets like parked aircrafts and helicopters, command and communications equipment, radar cabins, fuel dumps, unarmored cars. 14.5 mm version will be more effective against armored personnel carriers or relatively large "soft" targets at extended ranges. Anti-personnel work is by no means a primary task for this huge rifle.
NTW-20 is a manually operated, rotating bolt action rifle. The barrel is locked by the rotating bolt that has 6 lugs. The barrel along with the receiver could recoil inside the chassis frame against combined hydraulic and pneumatic damping system. Large two-chamber muzzle brake also helps to keep recoil at the acceptable level. NTW-20 is fed from the detachable box magazine, that is inserted from the left side and holds 3 rounds. The rifle could be disassembled and carried in two man-portable packs, each weighting about 12 - 15 kg. One pack carries the frame, stock, butt and bipod while the other carries the barrel, sighting equipment
and magazines. NTW-20 is equipped with a 8X magnification, long eye relief telescopic sight on the quick detachable mount. No open sight are fitted by default. The folding bipod is mounted under the receiver, and a non-folding frame above the receiver serves as a carrying handle and a scope protection bracket.
