Ferguson under attack on tactics, transfers
    LONDON, Oct 29 (AFP)
Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has come in for criticism for his tactics and dealings in the transfer market.
Leeds manager David O'Leary contested Ferguson's tactics following the 1-1 draw in their Premiership clash on Saturday saying he had got it all wrong in persisting with his 4-1-4-1.p
"Playing one man up front doesn't suit them," O'Leary told The Sun.
"United are much more of a threat with two up front. Scholes is best coming from deep. Juan Sebastian Veron is not a link man either."
O'Leary also claimed that the Old Trafford draw had convinced him that his side had the beating of United.
"We knew we could have this team on the rack. They are edgy at the back without a doubt." he added.
Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith also cast aspersions on the United back four accusing Laurent Blanc of bringing "a certain amount of confusion" since his arrival.
The French World Cup winner replaced Jaap Stam earlier this season - seemingly to shore up a leaky defence - but Smith said United are now even more vulnerable.
"With goals being conceded at an unprecedented rate and Blanc looking far from sure under pressure, a feeling exists that Ferguson has made a rare error of judgement," Smith told The Daily Telegraph.
"The French veteran has not lent a new dimension to the side by surging forward in possession, neither has he plugged the few gaps that previously existed at the back.
"On the contrary, his introduction has added a certain amount of confusion, rendering the champions more vulnerable to pace on the counter-attack."

Fergie could squander title with changes, says O'Leary
    By Ian McGarry
    [IMG]
David O'Leary has insisted that Sir Alex Ferguson will put the Premiership title at risk if he continues with his controversial new tactics.

Sir Alex: Looking stressed as his side draw with Leeds
    (CliveBrunskill/Allsport)
Leeds were the latest side to provide United with a scare on Saturday when Ferguson needed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to provide an 89th-minute equaliser to prevent United from suffering back-to-back home league defeats for the first time in a decade.
For the second time in five days United failed to score until the manager fielded a second striker and changed the formation from his new 4-1-4-1 to the tra***ional 4-4-2.
O'Leary was scathing in his assessment. He said: 'I don't think playing with only one striker up suits them. The effect is not that different for the opposition because you can have them on the rack and they still have six players who can change the game.
'They have that ability. But I don't think Paul Scholes is a link player. Scholes, to me, has got to come on from midfield. Veron is not playing in the right way and he is a great player. Neither Teddy Sheringham or Eric Cantona are within this group of players and they are the kind you need because Scholes is a great player but not as a link-up man.'
O'Leary said Dwight Yorke was the player he believed had the attributes needed to perform the role, though the striker's often strained relationship with Ferguson has seen him confined to fleeting first-team action.
United's defence remains under intense scrutiny as well and the Elland Road manager suggested he would rather have Rio Ferdinand in his team than any of the four full internationals - Gary Neville, Laurent Blanc, Wes Brown and Mickael Silvestre - who lined up for United.
O'Leary added: 'I think they are edgy at the back without a doubt.'
Ferguson is unlikely to lose any sleep over O'Leary's accusations even though United are continuing to lose goals and points at a rate which would give other managers nightmares. At the same time, one wonders how much longer United will persevere when there is an alternative which provides both goals and comfort.
If his pre-match analysis is an accurate guide then, hell, there is little prospect of a change. Ferguson said: 'We have been under scrutiny with our defence and systems questioned.
'I have spoken about both but I get the feeling not everyone is listening. Criticism is newsworthy but I shall continue to do what I think is right based on a great deal of experience.'
The 'I am right and everyone else is wrong' approach has served the manager and United well. Unfortunately, the recent experience of a team which struggles to convert superior possession into goals also seems to bypass him with the same ease that an opposition striker eludes his defence.
Mark Viduka is not the most deceptive or mobile of forwards and yet he lost both his natural markers in Blanc and Brown before peeling off from Silvestre to open the scoring for Leeds.
O'Leary said he sensed United's nerves in defence but they stem from the fact that Ruud van Nistelrooy is unable to relieve the pressure which builds at the back.
Solskjaer's equaliser from Ryan Giggs' cross a minute from time was hardly unexpected from the moment he replaced Nicky Butt in the 74th minute. But United need more than their super-sub to ensure their status and realise their ambition.
Leeds galvanised their role of realistic contenders and retain the only unbeaten record in the top flight despite having played Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and now United.
For the United decision-makers looking on, there was evidence that O'Leary is capable of changing tactics mid-game to cope with developments. Twice O'Leary tweaked his system and the only mistake he made was not to communicate to his play-ers that David Batty's deployment was not a signal to protect the one-goal lead.
Should O'Leary or any other manager succeed in depriving Ferguson of the championship, they could also expect to become the favourite for the Scot's job.
But success, as Ferguson can attest, comes with its own problems and persuading O'Leary to leave a club where he has just won the title would be another twist in a tale which has some way to run.
United's final Champions League opponents Lille remained one point behind French league leaders Lens after beating Metz 2-0. Lille took full points thanks to a penalty from former Derby and Middlesbrough striker Mikkel Beck and another first-half goal from Gregory Tafforeau.
United are already through and Lille cannot qualify but the French team's coach Vahid Halilhodzic said:'We have now won six out of six at home. We rested some of our players but the beauty of this squad is how well the team react to changes. Our aim is to maintain this form until the winter break.
'So much the better if we can also embarrass Manchester United along the way.'
