Although the band members had gone their separate ways since leaving Deep Purple, the Mark Two lineup had come together for a reunion in 1984. Producing the first original Deep Purple material in almost a decade, they were hugely successful with the release of Perfect Strangers and the follow-up tour, headlining once again in stadiums across the world.
Sadly, the magical part was short-lived. "Musical differences", that bane of groups everywhere, were quite evident by the second studio release from the reunion lineup and fans noticed that the same old Mk. 2 standards were being re-tread for concert duty. Gillan and Blackmore were clearly coming apart again, ultimately resulting in Gillan being fired in 1989.
The Mk. 2 reunion sound is dominated by Blackmore's guitar playing, and his playing is more reminiscent of his later Rainbow releases than anything else. This is not necessarily in and of itself bad, but does affect matters of taste for DP fans everywhere. The work on their studio releases is good, but not as monumental as it was in the heady days of 1969-1971.
