Bayern crash out of League Cup
Preetz ends Bayern's hopes of title
Since its introduction in 1997, the DFB League Cup has been won by only one team. This year the trophy will feature a name other than Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga champions were defeated 1-0 by Hertha Berlin on Wednesday evening at the semi-final stage of the competition.
The 15,600 spectators in the Rosenaustadion, home of fourth-division FC Augsburg, were not treated to a full-strength Bayern side. Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld had left five players in Munich (Lizarazu, Pizarro, Sagnol, Scholl and Sforza) for supplementary training, and was unable to call upon the injured Jancker and Jeremies.
The starting line-up presented two of Bayern's close-season signings. Pablo Thiam played in the centre of defence and Niko Kovac in midfield. An impressive attacking formation featured Giovane Elber, Roque Santa Cruz and Alexander Zickler.
Ottmar Hitzfeld had reassured us that this was more than just a friendly and this became apparent right from the kick-off, with both teams full or running and commitment.
Despite impressing with precision passing in midfield, the Berlin side were outplayed by Bayern during the first 20 minutes with strength on the flanks and a composed build-up. The Bavarians failed to convert a number of half-chances, however, and Berlin's confidence grew. In the 33rd minute, a delicate chip from Deisler beat the offside trap and Alex Alves, with only Kahn to beat, fired the ball over the bar.
Stefan Effenberg stated in today's 'Sỹddeutsche Zeitung' newspaper that Sebastian Deisler "has a crucial year ahead of him." Midfielder Deisler got his year off to a great start in the 39th minute when his precision cross was met by Michael Preetz, whose diving header steered the ball past Kahn.
A powerful header from Roque Santa Cruz met Hasan Salihamidzic's curling cross from the right after 44 minutes. This was Bayern's best chance of the first half.
Ottmar Hitzfeld's side emerged after the break and continued to attack a Hertha Berlin side bent on defending the 1-0 lead. Elber headed over the bar and then Paulo Sergio, who had replaced Michael Tarnat (he had broken a little toe), was unlucky to have a shot saved at the feet of goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly.
The Berlin side waited to pounce on the break. Another accurate through-ball from Deisler reached Alves, who was once again foiled by Kahn. Three minutes later, Preetz hit the post with a powerfully directed header. Bayern increased the tempo once again during the final 20 minutes, but to no avail. After the game, Stefan Effenberg agreed that this was a match of missed opportunities and that more chances needed to be converted in the future.
