Boring, boring Manchester okay says United skipper Keane

Manchester United skipper Roy Keane believes the English Premiership giants need to be more boring if they are to realise their Champions League dream, it was reported Thursday.

The outspoken Irish midfielder said Tuesday's dour 1-0 win over French side Lille - United's first clean sheet of the season - was good news for Alex Ferguson's squad.
United's defence, which leaked four goals against Newcastle in the league last Saturday, was in need of tightening Keane said - and the shut-out of Lille was a welcome improvement.

"That was important after conceding four goals on Saturday, and sometimes we need to be a bit more like this," Keanes was quoted by several newspapers as saying.

"Sometimes we need to be more boring, if that's the way you want to put it," he added.

Although Ferguson's teams through the years have been characterised by their attacking flair, Keane said he felt the all-action brand of football had been responsible for United's European failures in the past two seasons.

"We can't be winning games 4-3 or 4-0 every week," he said. "We need to be more professional and that's maybe why we have come unstuck in Europe over the last few years.

"You look at Bayern Munich last year at home and 0-0 wouldn't have been that bad a result, but we lost 1-0 to a late winner. We have to realise that a draw isn't the end of the world, and we have to take it," he said.
