    Workplace Lausanne, Switzerland
    Description We currently have an open PhD position for the project ?oDynamics in Helium Nanodroplets?
    This project investigates the electronic excitation and photoionization of species dissolved in superfluid helium nanodroplets in order to gain a more profound understanding of the mechanisms governing the dynamics in this finite size quantum liquid. In ad***ion, we plan to make use of the special characteristics of the helium solvent to study fundamental properties of embedded systems, for example electron transfer, or to probe the potential energy surfaces of large molecular systems. To achieve these goals experiments in both the time and frequency domain are performed using nanosecond and femtosecond laser systems in combination with state-of-the-art ion- and electron-imaging techniques. In ad***ion, experiments are planned at the XUV free electron laser in Trieste (Italy) that is current being constructed and is expected to become operational in 2009. More detailed information on the project can be found HERE
    We are looking for a highly motivated and creative person with a masters degree in physics or physical chemistry to work on this project. The University of Antwerp is a knowledge centre with 3.400 employees involved in ground-breaking and innovative research of international standing. The university takes special care to ensure optimum support and supervision of students, and pays constant attention to educational innovation. The University is an autonomous pluralistic institution that is committed to the enhancement of an open, democratic and multicultural society, and it pursues an equal opportunities policy.
    The Department of Transport and Regional Economics of the Faculty of Applied Economics (University of Antwerp) will recruit a full-time:
    Pre-doctoral researcher / Ph.D. student for a research project on
    The influence of congestion and congestion policy on the efficiency of business logistics processes.
    Promotor: Dr. Wout Dullaert, Associate professor of operations and logistics management
    Co-promotor: Dr. Bruno De Borger, Professor of Economics
    This research project aims at examining the impact of congestion and congestion policy on the logistics efficiency of companies. This issue is studied both from an operations research and an economic perspective. To investigate the effects of congestion and congestion policy at the level of an individual decision maker, several OR models will be developed to estimate the impact on (i) an individual link of the supply chain, (ii) on the size and positioning of safety stocks in an existing supply chain, and (iii) on redesigning a supply chain. For the economic analysis, partial equilibrium models will be designed to analyze the effects of congestion and congestion policy on fundamental logistics key performance indicators (e.g. average stock levels, service levels etc).
    Profile
    Candidates should have:
    masters degree in mathematics, commercial engineering, applied economics, civil/industrial engineering, bioengineering or equal;
    a strong interest in operations research and/or economic modelling and the ambition to write a Ph.D. dissertation;
    a strong academic record;
    a good knowledge of English.
    We offer:
    A scholarship in a stimulating research environment, starting as soon as possible until September 30th 2009, to be extended by two ad***ional years after a positive evaluation.
