    PhD researcher

    Job description
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Innovation of vehicles by reducing their weight and hence fuel consumption and associated CO2 emission, can be realized by developing advanced high strength steels, like transformation or twinning induced plasticity steels (TRIP or TWIP). However, protection against corrosion is vital in such applications. Therefore modern high strength steel sheets are coated with zinc by hot-dipped galvanizing. Successful application of such a zinc coating relies on preventing oxides other than iron oxides to develop on the steel surface prior to hot-dipping with zinc. To this end, an annealing process must be devised such that in the beginning selective internal oxidation of alloying elements occur and at the end reduction of iron oxides. A numerical model will be developed which describes the oxidation and reduction phenomena upon annealing of advanced high strength steels. This includes a comprehensive assessment of the thermodynamics and kinetics involved. In the modeling work, the relations with steel composition and microstructure are addressed. Aspects of multi-element oxidation and non-equilibrium thermodynamics will be covered in the theoretical approach. In order to validate the theoretical work, experimental studies are foreseen, such as oxidation and reduction kinetics using thermogravimetry, composition and microstructure determination with electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis etc. The numerical model translated into a computer program must deliver the annealing process parameter windows and for the steel alloy design the compositions limits.

    PhD Researcher
    (Zuid-Holland), Materials innovation institute M2i

    Job description
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Intergranular corrosion is a very important problem in the application of metals. This type of corrosion is the preferential attack of the grain boundaries or closely adjacent regions without appreciable attack of the grains themselves, and is caused by a difference in the corrosion potential between the grain boundary-region and the adjacent grain. This type of corrosion is frequently found in a range of Al alloys that are important for aerospace and the automotive industries. As the corrosion is related to the chemistry at the grain boundary and starts on a nanoscale, it is necessary to perform in-situ oxidation experiments in an electron microscope to monitor the amount of corrosion and the valence of the formed metal ions.
The PhD student will investigate with a transmission electron microscope (TEM) the local corrosion of several industrially important and will perform in particular electron energy loss spectroscopy in the TEM with subnanometer spots as a function of position relative to grain boundaries and (nanoscale) precipitates. These experiments will be done quasi in-situ and in situ. In the quasi in-situ corrosion experiments the student will use a vacuum transfer holder with repeated exposure of the specimen in a special corrosion chamber. For the continuous corrosion experiments the student will use a MEMS-based in-situ specimen stages. Also specimens exposed to corrosion environments prior to the TEM sample preparation will be studied (ex-situ post-mortem experiments).
The student will collaborate with several industrial partners. The student will work and interact with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers consisting of physicists, chemists and mechanical engineers on a regular basis, within both industry and academia.
    Requirements
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The PhD candidate should have an MSc degree in chemistry, materials science, or metallurgy, should be enthusiastic about the collaboration with industry (Corus), should be willing to put much effort in designing and improving experimental set-ups and should consider the electron microscopy work on the corrosion of industrial alloys (with complex microstructure) as challenging.
