Ph.D. position in atmospheric water vapour at University of Bern
    Tuesday 23. September 2008
Company Institute of Applied Physics, University of Bern
    Workplace Bern, Switzerland
Description Water vapour is an important climate variable and it plays a key role in several issues of atmospheric processes such as radiation, chemistry and dynamics. Accurate, height-resolved measurements of atmospheric humi***y are difficult to obtain. The change in concentration of five orders of magnitude from the ground to the stratosphere means there is no standard instrument that will measure everywhere.
Our research aim is the realisation of vertical profiles of atmospheric water vapour from the ground up to the mesosphere. This aim shall be achieved by the exploration, cross-validation, by merging, and refinement of different measurement techniques and optimized retrieval techniques, by using data from different instruments, such as microwave radiometry, balloon sondes, ceilometer, lidar etc.
The vision for this project is the realisation of a water vapour profiling ?osuper sitê? in Switzerland by combining available infrastructure at Bern (IAP, Univ. of Bern) and Payerne (MeteoSwiss). This research is part of the Europen COST project WAVACS (water vapour in the climate system).
For this task of an integrated profiling technique we are looking for a highly motivated Ph.D. student who has a strong interest in atmospheric processes, is interested in measuring techniques and in numerical estimation techniques.

Education Candidates should have a Master or Diploma degree in physics, environmental or earth sciences or equivalent

    PhD Student ''Computer Vision''
Amsterdam, 1098SM, (Noord-Holland), University of Amsterdam

    Job description
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    PhD Student ''Computer Vision'' (2x)
The appointee will perform research on colour in computer vision and in particular on image segmentation, object recognition and image understanding.
    Requirements
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    University Graduate
    õ? MSc in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics or Mathematics;
õ? Preferably some expertise in the field of computer vision or colour.
    Ad***ional information about the job:
There is a huge increase in the amount of digital image and video information. This calls for advanced feature learning and visual recognition techniques. Furthermore, as the digital information becomes more and more available in colour format (images, videos and movies), there is an increasing demand for the use and understanding of colour information. Although colour has been proven to be a central topic in various disciplines (ranging from art, humanities, biology to physics), colour in computer vision and the pictorial information exploration thereof has largely been ignored so far. This study resolves this.
The central topic of this study is to investigate novel computational methods which are essential for visual recognition i.e. image segmentation, object and scene recognition and image understanding. Theoretical models are studied to express colour semantics from both a physical as well as a perceptual point of view. These models are the foundations of new theories for visual exploration which are tested in practice by large scale experiments.

    PhD student Sensor Data Management
Enschede, 7500 AE, (Overijssel), 38 hours per week University of Twente

    Job description
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    PhD student Sensor Data Management.
    Project description
In this internal project a decentralized sensor data management infrastructure for e-science applications is developed. In e-science scenarios a data management infrastructure is used to e.g. run models, calculate correlations or interpolations between sensor data. This processing is based on different data classes like e.g. streaming sensor data or static map data. The combination of these different data classes and their properties related to update and insertion behavior requires a new state model for data management.
Since sensor data are collected, maintained, and shared by different organizations a sensor data management is decentralized. The decentralization introduces new challenges on performing data management operations resulting in state changes of the data collection. In particular, the aim is *****pport state changes on a local system in the decentralized sensor data management which are also valid on a holistic view of the sensor data management. Finally, the new state model and the corresponding state changes have to be applied on the physical level, which introduces challenges on the performance optimization.
This research has a clear application domain, which provides clear research questions. These questions provide substantial theoretical challenges, while the proposed solutions can be evaluated in the application domain again.

Ph.D. Research Assistantship to Explore the Potential of DSP for Digital Terrain Elevation Data at the Netherlands Defense Academy and Delft University of Technology
With todayâ?Ts digital signal processing capabilities, it becomes possible to optimize the performance parameters of a navigation system for a particular set of intended applications. The Netherlands Defense Academy and the Delft University of Technology are providing an opportunity of a Ph.D. research assistantship to explore opportunities in the field of Terrain Reference Navigation (TRN) by using digital signal processing techniques that were originally developed for the acquisition and tracking of GPS signals. The goal of the research is to contribute to the creation of a design framework which can be used to match technology and processing concepts to a particular set of navigation system performance requirements. The focus lies on exploring the potential of various digital signal processing concepts for matching a set of distance measurements with a stored database of the environment.
The candidate should hold a Masterâ?Ts degree in electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics or any other relevant study with substantial knowledge on data processing. Research will be conducted both at the Netherlands Defense Academy and at Delft University of Technology. Leaders of the project are established researchers in the field of applied mathematics, geomatics and electronics. Contact Prof. P.J. Oonincx, Netherlands Defense Academy, at [pj.oonincx AT nlda.nl]. More information about the Netherlands Defense Academy can be found here.
