    PhD â?" Scholarship in Plasticity
Department of Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics Section
A 3-year Ph.D. scholarship is available at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics Section, from mid 2008.
Reinforcement of polymers using carbon nano-tubes or nano-sized SiC particles can be applied to increase the stiffness. For composites, in which the reinforcing fibers are on very different size scales, very high strain gradients in the matrix material near the fibers can affect the overall properties significantly. Higher order continuum theories (strain gradient models) can be used to model the matrix material at the relevant small scale, accounting for effects of boundary layers of constrained plastic deformations around the hard reinforcing fibers. For the relatively low volume fractions used in nano reinforced materials it may prove useful to also add fibers on a larger scale. The effect of reinforcing materials with fibers on different length scales is the focus of this Ph.D. study. The aim is to develop methods for analyzing nano- and micro-reinforced materials, through advanced numerical models accounting for the relevant small scale plastic deformation.
The Solid Mechanics Section at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has a long tra***ion of front edge research within the area of materials mechanics, and we have close collaborations with other strong groups both in Denmark and abroad.
We offer a stimulating environment, focused on research at an international level.
Candidates should have a masterâ?Ts degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the masterâ?Ts degree in engineering.

    Erasmus University
We are looking for excellent candidates for the PhD project.
Title PhD project: Intelligent Trading Agents that Facilitate Decision Making in Multi-Agent Marketplaces using Preference Modeling
PhD supervisors: Eric van Heck, Wolf Ketter
Abstract: Modern business networks and markets are highly dynamic and exhibit a high degree of uncertainty. Under these con***ions business
managers are routinely faced with complex strategic, tactical, and operational decisions; decisions ranging from the macroscopic (i.e. which markets should we enter and when?) to the microscopic (i.e. which products should be packed on which pallet?). Also customers are faced with multi attribute decisions, such as from whom can I book a travel under certain constraints (money, time, quality, etc)? Within this project we investigate how learning agents may be designed *****pport humans in these decision making processes. We define learning agents as software entities that carry out some set of operations on behalf of a user or another program with some degree of independence or autonomy, improve their performance from experience and in so doing employ some knowledge or representation of the userâ?Ts goals or needs.
The candidate must fit in the following profile:
MSc or MBA degree in Business Administration, or Management & Economics, or Information Management, or Computer science & Economics; Excellent study record; International orientation and the capacity to speak and write in English; Affiliation with the IT industry, Commitment and drive to execute PhD research.

Mấy cái nì chả hiểu rì nhưng thôi cứ post lên. Bít đâu lại trúng bác nào đó.
Anticipating environmental impacts of scarce metals supply
    Company Empa-TSL; ETH Zürich-NSSI
Workplace Empa Dübendorf/St.Gallen (60%) and ETH Zürich (40%)
Description Up to date, only few attempts have been made to systematically analyse and represent the interrelations be-tween scarce chemical element demand triggered by emerging technologies, and potential supply-related impacts induced by e.g. complex relationships between main and joint products within the metal production systems (the so called ''Web of Metals'') or changes in mineral ore and end-of-life material qualities.
A PhD-thesis co-supervised by Empa, Technology and Society Laboratory (TSL) and ETH, Natural and So-cial Science Interface (NSSI) shall contribute to bridge this gap by applying and integrating the results of formative scenario analysis, material and energy flow analysis, and prospective Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The goal is to quantify the environmental and to discuss the social and economic impacts of primary and secondary scarce metal production in the context of emerging energy technologies, in particular thin film photovoltaics.
The outcomes of the project will include (1) appropriate life cycle inventory data related to scarce metal pro-duction for prospective LCA and (2) suggestions of appropriate policy measures for environmentally sustain-able primary and secondary scarce metals production and use, under particular consideration of potentially associated trade-offs, as well as of intra- and intergenerational fairness issues.
We are looking for a highly motivated person able *****ccessfully tackle transdisciplinary, complex issues re-lated to a field, which is increasingly coming to the fore of the public and the scientific discourse. He or she will be supervised by Dr. Patrick Wäger (Empa), Dr. Daniel Lang (ETH NSSI) and Prof. Dr. Roland Scholz (ETH NSSI).
Please apply for this position in German or English by mail to patrick.waeger@empa.ch and daniel.lang@env.ethz.ch, including a letter of application, a CV, certificates, representative documents (e.g. master thesis or publication(s)) and two references until April 11, 2008.

Education Candidates shall have a Master?Ts Degree in environmental sciences or in a related field. Basic knowledge in geol-ogy/mineralogy as well as experience in scenario analysis, material flow analysis, modelling and simulation, Life Cycle Assessment, and policy analysis are good but not necessary assets. The candidate must be willing to deal with a highly inter- and transdisciplinary topic which requires integrating natural science, engineering, social and economic aspects in a comprehensive analytical approach.
