Scholarship scheme to benefit PhD studentsProfessor Sir Timothy Oõ?TShea, Principal, has unveiled a scheme offering more than 110 new PhD scholarships.
The Principal''s Career Development PhD Scholarships, a Ê6 million funding scheme, is open to UK, EU and overseas students taking research degrees in any field of study.
Close to 60 scholarships will be offered per year for students beginning their study over the next two academic years.
The scholarship scheme includes a package of career training that allows PhD students to simultaneously develop skills in research, and also in teaching, public engagement, or entrepreneurship.
Generous stipend
Each scholarship will cover the home rate of tuition fee as well as a stipend which will increase each year. In 2010-2011 the stipend will be Ê13,500; in 2011-2012 this will increase to Ê14,000; and in 2012-13 it will be Ê14,500.
Subject to satisfactory progress, the awards can cover the cost of studying at the University for up to three years.

The Laboratory for Photovoltaics develops thin film solar cells, based on compound semiconductors.The aim of both PhD projects is to investigate the synthesis of complicated semiconductor materials using low cost electrochemical and annealing methods. The projects will involve synthesis, materials and opto-electrochemical and annealing methods. The project will involve synthesis, materials and opto-electronic characterization.
Profile:
Masters degree in Chemistry or Physics with excellent grades
Solid background in one of the following: inorganic or physical chemistry, soft condensed matter, solid state physics, solar cells

Project Description:
Graduate studies in organometallic chemistry. The project is to develop catalysts for direct functionalisation of hydrocarbons and to heterogenise them by surface anchoring and investigate the catalytic activity in e.g. C-C bond forming reactions. Characterisation will be done using ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) and in situ surface science techniques.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate should have a strong background in Synthetic Chemistry and an interest in developing complimentary skills in Physics and Materials Science. A Masterõ?Ts Degree in Organic or Organometallic Chemistry is desirable. The candidate cannot be a Swedish citizen or be a permanent resident in Sweden.

Project description:
This PhD project will be focusing on improving our understanding of the influence presence and absence of permafrost has on greenhouse gas exchanges (GHG) at high latitudes with particular attention to methane. It will use established measurement sites as well as where necessary establish new sites to study specifically the seasonal dynamics and how they differ in permafrost environments compared to other northern areas. Some emphasis will be on shoulder season and winter processes as our research group recently have discovered some very interesting and poorly understood emission patterns during these seasons in permafrost environments. The project will produce measurement based regional upscale estimates for seasonal dynamics of large scale emissions to be compared with atmospheric observations and modeling. Where appropriate the project will also work on improved process understanding of permafrost dynamics in controlled environment facilities specially designed for such experiments present in the Lund laboratories.
Tasks:
The job will involve substantial amounts of field work during all seasons in cold environments. The work will be focusing on flux measurements of GHGs (primarily CO2 and CH4 but possibly also N2O) using gas chromatographic, IR and laser techniques. Candidates with prior experience with ecosystem atmosphere flux measurements (chamber and/or eddy covariance) under field con***ions will therefore be preferred.
Qualifications:
Master of Science or equivalent in relevant subject, Physical Geography, Ecology, Ecosystem Science, Biogeochemistry, Biogeophysics. Experience with field and laboratory experiments and measurements relating to ecosystem-atmosphere interactions in particular greenhouse gas exchanges is preferred. Master of science or equivalent. Not required but experience with work as research assistant is an advantage and a minimum of 4 years of University studies. Good-excellent is English required, Swedish and advantage.

b] Giới thiệu về chương trình Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng)
Đây là chương trình kéo dài 2 năm thường được gọi là Postmaster, ứng cử viên phải có bằng Master trước khi apply cho chương trình này. PDEng khác với PhD thông thường ở chỗ sinh viên theo học chương trình này thường làm nghiên cứu nhưng nghiêng nhiều hơn về mảng ứng dụng và hướng nghiệp. Chương trình liên kết chặt chẽ với các công ty lớn của Hà Lan, do đó tất cả các sinh viên đều được sắp xếp vào một project cụ thể của các công ty này và trường. HB cho mỗi vị trí PDEng là 1700EUR/tháng (gross) và các điều khoản hỗ trợ khác.
