    Overview
    The Intelligent Energy Systems (IES) is seeking a PhD to widen the scientific activities in the program.
    The IES program has recently been established at Risá DTU in order to strengthen and focus the research in this field. The programs contribute to research in energy systems with a high degree of stochastic energy, interconnected to other energy systems, architecture, technologies and systems. Modeling of electricity markets, using high level mathematical methods, taking into account the stochastic nature of renewable energy is one of the key elements. The research is carried out in corporation with other universities, utilities and industry, and participation in international activities will be expected.
    The test facility SYSLAB is an experimental platform for research verification and demonstration in a real life power grid, able to run in islanding mode. SYSLAB consists of interconnected sites on the Risá DTU Campus with e.g. battery/storage, wind turbines, generators and loads. The integrated PowerFlexHouse serves research of strategies for Demand control and Technology verification. The facilities are currently being extended. SYSLAB is a part of the Danish Consortium PowerLab.dk and projects for close integration between the four labs are under implementation.

    Job description
    Flexible and controllable distributed electricity resources (DERs), including generating, consuming and storing units, provides the option to contribute with power system services, necessarily to maintain proper operation of the power system õ?" increasing with the amount of intermittent power generation like wind and solar. The contributions from the individual DER units may be modest, but the aggregated contribution from many DER units can be significant. Voluntary responses to broadcasted dynamic power prices is a simple, but stochastic and indirectly mechanism for control of many units. The PhD study will be part of a newly started project, FlexPower, investing this opportunity.
    The specific topic of the PhD is to develop, implement and experimentally evaluate control algorithms based on dynamic power prices for selected components of the Risá DTU experimental power system, SYSLAB, including forecasts of power generations, power consumptions and power prices.

    Job description
    Socio economic and technical evaluation of intelligent energy systems requires system-wide power system models. The stochastic optimization model Wilmar (wilmar.risoe.dk) is designed for modeling of power markets with a high share of fluctuating renewable power production. It has been used in several international wind integration projects such as the European Wind Integration Study (EWIS). The Wilmar model has hourly time resolution, but it is also important to model and analyse up and down regulation of power production within the hour and the associated intra-hour power markets. The topic of the PhD scholarship is to develop a model for intra-hour power markets with 5 minute time resolution that can interact with the Wilmar model. Such a model is already under development in corporation with the Danish TSO Energinet.dk, and the PhD will use existing work on the topic as a starting point.

    PhD scholarship
    Micro Mechanical Damage Tolerance Improvements of Composites
    Technical University of Denmark
    A PhD scholarship is available at DTU Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark in the field of micro mechanical modelling of composite materials for wind turbine blades. The department has well-established research activities within material modelling and composite mechanics. The present scholarship is partly funded by the Danish Centre for Composite Structures and Materials for Wind Turbines (www.DCCSM.dk) supported by the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation.
    Project description
    As the size of wind turbine blades increases the strength requirements on all length scales become increasingly demanding. DCCSM aims at bridging from nano to structural scale, and to connect the individual scale levels using optimization, making it possible to optimize a composite component on the nano scale using structural performance criteria. In this PhD project focus is on the micro mechanical damage modeling of composites. Often failure initiation occurs as delamination cracks propagating between two adjacent plies, making the concept of cohesive zone modeling a powerful and well suited approach to model through-thickness reinforcements in terms of stitching or Z-pins to mitigate delamination. These are promising methods often applied in composite laminates *****ppress delamination, and micro mechanical modeling and improvements of such reinforcements are also the focus of this PhD scholarship.
    Specifically, the aim of this project is to develop an efficient numerical analysis approach using cohesive zone techniques to realistically study failure of composites. The developed analysis approach has to be validated against experiments. The following topics have been identified as the most important:
    * Finite element modeling
    * Cohesive zone modeling
    * Material anisotropy
    * Plasticity
    * Experimental techniques
    The project should result in a numerical micro mechanical tool capable for implementation into analysis models on larger length scales.
    The expected start date is 1st November 2010.
    Qualifications
    Candidates should have a master''s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master''s degree in engineering. Strong skills in solid mechanics, finite element modelling, programming in Fortran/Matlab and a keen interest in experimental techniques and commercial FE-software packages, e.g. ANSYS and/or ABAQUS are needed. Also, fluency in speaking, reading and writing English is important.
    Approval and Enrolment
    The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
