    PhD position on community tagging
    PhD position (1 fte)
    =====================================================

In engineering projects like building a highway several interest groups must be involved and the aim is to achieve a good consensus between the varies interest groups and get a feasible solution. This consensus process is based on discussing various design alternatives often sketched in a spatial representation (e.g. a map). During this process several alternatives are discussed, modified, rejected and adjusted over time. To keep the spatial representation readable, sepereate temporal tendencies requires to aggregate contributions provided by the interest groups according to topic, space and time dimension.

In this PhD project a framework will be developed to access tagged information in a temporal spatial environment on varying aggregation levels to enable the zooming in and out of a map. The challenge is that not much is known on which content will be available, on how the discussion will evolve and which scale the discussion will be performed. Further, the amount of information will make it necessary to pre-process the information to enable fast, web based access. Thus, the main challenge is to provide information in a fast and flexible way without making many assumptions on the information provided by the users and the way users are going to query this information. In this project the idea is to observe the query behaviour of users and self-organize the pre-aggregation levels. I.e., based on the observed user behaviour and a storage boundary the optimal pre-aggregation levels are determined in a streaming fashion minimizing the query response time.

Fully funded PhD position: geoprofile-driven social network enrichment

    The challenge
    -------------
Internet technologies have created a fabric for information exchange far beyond the original intent to share information between humans. It has become a landscape where entities (people, sensors, devices, observatories) generate events bound in time and by location, carving out event trajectories within a domain of activity. We are especially interested in serving space/time understanding in social networks. The proper characterization of the where-and-when of social network member activity in geoprofiles allows the optimization of communication between the members. Collecting, archiving and annotating these trajectories forms the basis for
knowledge extraction and management and for the organization of social communities by mutual interest.

The PhD project aims to provide a toolset for building support systems for a networked community whose members display similar activities in similar locations and want to share content, valuations and experiences about those. Scientific challenges encountered include geo-referenced entity resolution, automatic data integration for content enrichment, information extraction, uncertainty management and data quality improvement, domain-of-activity specification, understanding user activities and routes (geoprofiling), and spatial data processing. An XML-based ETL-architecture will be developed that is based on a spatially enhanced XML DBMS and that includes a toolset to provide for development support with the above challenges when focusing on user-volunteered content.

An important point of focus of this research project is to adequately address accuracy, completeness, ambiguity, conflicts, and trust in volunteered information, geo-referencing of not explicitly geo-referenced information, and matching this against known spatial information. Volunteered spatial-temporal data will come to us in large quantities as semi-structured reports describing local context. These volunteers may not have positioning devices, or the objects described may not have been collocated with such a device, and thus such data may lack precise geo-reference. In temporal and thematic details, the reports may be similarly imprecise.

The objective of this PhD research project is to establish and validate a framework for geoprofile-driven content enrichment and data quality improvement on the basis of user-volunteered content and open spatial data services. The research is part of a larger national research project on Spatio-Temporal Data Warehousing. Validation of the framework is to be organized and executed in co-operation with the company EuroCottage (see http://www.eurocottage.com) in the domain of community building and holiday home location profiling. Co-operation with a concurrently running project on neogeography offers a second domain for validation: international
    development collaboration in agriculture.

In the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EWI) is the place where these three disciplines shape Information and Communication Technology at the University of Twente. ICT is more than communication. In almost every product we use mathematics, electronics and computer technology are present, and ICT now contributes to all of societies' activities. It is no longer about gadgets that we do or do not want to use. The real integration of ICT is just beginning. What we need is more intelligence in our systems and improvement of their natural interaction with humans.

Elucidating molecular morphology following host/pathogen-interactions using imaging techniques
supervisors: Prof. Hans-Peter Saluz, HKI, Dr. Aleš Svatoš, MPI-CE

A great part of our research is devoted to the flow of molecular information during host-pathogen interactions. As model hosts we are using various cell lines, chick embryos in ovo and plants, and the pathogens of our main interest are intracellular bacteria and pathogenic fungi.
The aim of this project concerns the identification and characterization of molecular changes upon host/pathogen-interactions during infection processes. Thereby we will analyze the location and possible alterations of molecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids, metabolites and immunological markers demonstrated within cellular and subcellular structures. This would allow us to get detailed information regarding host-specificity, distribution of pathogens in hosts, virulence, etc. The project will involve highly advanced imaging techniques like hyperspectral imaging, MS-imaging, PET-CT in combination with other molecular techniques.

The project is part of the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) "The Exploration of Ecological Interactions with Molecular and Chemical Techniques" in Jena, Germany. Students holding a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in molecular biology, ecology, entomology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry and neuroethology, with a proven record of success in one of the disciplines and interest in examining ecological interactions, are eligible to conduct a doctoral project within the IMPRS.
The Research School is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, and the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research. The main focus is on the interaction between plants and animals, and their environment, as well as the evolutionary and behavioral consequences of these interactions.
Application deadline is June 26, 2011. For detailed information about the IMPRS, PhD topics offered and application requirements, please visit our website http://imprs.ice.mpg.de/.

    PhD position Infection Biology (m/f)

im Bereich Forschung & Entwicklung, Forschung & Lehre
bei Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, Institut für Experimentelle Innere Medizin

    Eingetragen am: 18.06.11

The Institute of Experimental Internal Medicine offers:

    PhD position (m/f) (TVL-E13/2)

in an interdisciplinary project of Infection Biology.

Helicobacter pylori, the etiological agent of several human gastric diseases, induce the transcription factor NF-kappaB in colonized epithelial cells leading to the release of pro-inflammatory mediators.
The project is based on recent discoveries of novel signaling components of the NF-kappaB signaling pathway in mammalian cells. The successful applicants will define the role of this novel signaling molecules in Helicobacter pylori infection model by integrating molecularbiological, physiological and cell biological analysis.
The research program of the institute encompasses scientific projects on the regulation of the NF-kappaB signal transduction in the pathophysiology of inflammation and tumor biology (e.g. differentiation and cell cycle control). Here, the molecular and cell biological mechanisms of the intracellular signal transmission are of special interest. The institute allows an internationally competitive research by providing state of the art technologies in protein analysis, mass spectrometry and microscopy.
The institute coordinates and participates in a variety of coordinated programs funded by the German Research Foundation (GRK1167, SFB854, SFB779, SPP1365 and FOR521), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (SysTec) and the European Union (Marie Curie Research Training Network).
Further, the institute is member of the interdisciplinary "Research Center Dynamic Systems: Biosystems Engineering (CDS)" funded by the Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt within the "Excellence Program" and the "Magdeburg Center of Systems Biology (MaCS)" funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research within the „FORSYS“ program "Research Units in Systems Biology".
The Otto von Guericke University wishes to increase the proportion of female academic personnel. Women are therefore explicitly encouraged to apply. Handicapped persons with equivalent qualification will be given preference.
