    Workplace Lausanne, Switzerland
Description We currently have an open PhD position for the project ?oDynamics in Helium Nanodroplets?
This project investigates the electronic excitation and photoionization of species dissolved in superfluid helium nanodroplets in order to gain a more profound understanding of the mechanisms governing the dynamics in this finite size quantum liquid. In ad***ion, we plan to make use of the special characteristics of the helium solvent to study fundamental properties of embedded systems, for example electron transfer, or to probe the potential energy surfaces of large molecular systems. To achieve these goals experiments in both the time and frequency domain are performed using nanosecond and femtosecond laser systems in combination with state-of-the-art ion- and electron-imaging techniques. In ad***ion, experiments are planned at the XUV free electron laser in Trieste (Italy) that is current being constructed and is expected to become operational in 2009. More detailed information on the project can be found HERE
We are looking for a highly motivated and creative person with a masters degree in physics or physical chemistry to work on this project. The successful candidate is expected to make active contributions to the research that is being carried out in a small team. Experience with lasers systems, vacuum equipment or imaging techniques is desirable but not required. The position will be for a maximum period of 4 years, with a starting salary of CHF 50''000 per annum.
Interested candidates can apply by sending their CV, grade transcripts, and contact information of 3 references to Dr. Marcel Drabbels at Marcel.Drabbels@epfl.ch

    Workplace Zẳrich Hảnggerberg
Description The Centre for Cultural Studies in Architecture has been awarded two Swiss National Science Foundation PhD Scholarships (full-time, for three years). The researchers will work on a project concerned with in-depth research on decision-making processes in the field of design competitions. We suggest that research on competition procedures must consider specific characteristics of processes. In competitions, various levels of communication and technologies of representation are intertwining: images, text, models, and spoken discourse. Since there are no direct bridges between diverse realms of society such as politics, aesthetics, law, economy, science, communication between those fields must be established by some kinds of couplings; and design competitions constitute such platforms for communication. From this we conclude that we need adequate concepts in order to deal with the mentioned properties: whereas the intertwining of technologies of representation in competitions decision-making can be referred to actant-networks (Latour), we conceptualise the competition as a platform for communication with the notion of ''folding''. The project will be based on a theory of social complexity (Assemblage Theory, ANT, Deleuze). The project''s inquiry into contemporary competition processes will be organised in three tracks which also define the two PhD projects. The Project combines (1) a survey of competitions in order to trace the topology of sets of problems, procedures, networks, and solutions (PhD 1); (2) (participatory) in-depth analysis of ongoing competitions in order to analyse the folding of diverse fields in design competitions as they evolve (PhD 2); and (3) focused conceptual and methodical development which aims at further developing õ?~tracing'' and õ?~mapping'' of assemblages (Post-doc reseacher).

Education The successful candidate is interested in the field of social complexity, disposes of strong analytical skills and holds a master degree in the field of urban planning, urban geography/sociology, architecture (with research experience), or a similar degree. Please indicate whether you prefer to work on the mainly quantitative track (PhD 1) or on the mainly qualitative track (PhD 2). For further information please contact the leader of the research group Dr. Joris E Van Wezemael (vanwezemael@arch.ethz.ch).

Entrance upon as soon as possible
Remarks We offer the opportunity to participate in a research project in the emerging field of systematic research on design-competitions and to graduate at PhD level at the ETH Zẳrich. The Project starts a.s.a.p. Project duration is 3 years. Applications should be made with full CV, a recent publication, and a covering letter saying why you would like to apply and two references.

Description The PhD project is integrated in the recently funded CCES project:Advanced Process Understanding of Complex Hazards (APUNCH)The research focuses on the geotechnical and erosive processes leading to dyke breach in levees located along the Rhone, working in conjunction with a parallel project on full scale field monitoring of an existing levee. Centrifuge modelling of dyke response, including eventual breaching, will be carried out to investigate the response of embankment dams due to a variety of weather con***ions and eventual erosion. The field case will be modelled and a parametric study will be carried out on a range of levee cross-sections. A contribution towards validation and calibration of numerical codes for breaching will also be made.
Education The successful candidate will have graduated at the top of their University with a Bachelor''s degree in engineering sciences or civil engineering and specialisation at Master''s level in geotechnical engineering, or with a Diploma equivalent to a Masters, also with geotechnical specialisation. He/she will be able to speak, understand and write English in a scientific manner to a high standard. Some competence in German will be helpful, otherwise it is expected that the successful candidate will improve their linguistic competence. He/she will have practical skill for laboratory work, and in particular, will have significant ability/potential in mechanics and analysis. Competence in unsaturated soil mechanics will be advantageous. For further information please contact Prof. Dr. S.M. Springman (sarah.springman@igt.baug.ethz.ch).

    PhD Position in Physics/Materials Science
    Company Paul Scherrer Institut
    Workplace 5232 Villigen / Switzerland
Description The Paul Scherrer Institut is a centre for multi-disciplinary research and one of the worldõ?Ts leading user laboratories. With its 1300 employees it belongs as an autonomous institution to the Swiss ETH domain and concentrates its activities on solid-state research and material sciences, elementary particle physics, energy and environmental research as well as on biology and medicine.
Our team at the Swiss Light Source (SLS) at the Paul Scherrer Institut concentrates on the understanding of magnetic and electronic properties of solids, both on the nanometer and atomic level. This covers topics such as the dynamical switching of a magnetic domain, the interaction between a ferro and an antiferro magnet as well as metal-insulator transitions in oxides. As part of the Swiss Light Source, we develop and operate instrumentation dedicated to study these topics using x-rays.
    Education Your tasks
You will investigate how electrons are getting localized when transition metal oxides (manganites) transform from a metal to an insulator, and how this relates to the occurrence of a proposed electrical polarization. Your work will directly aim on the interplay of orbitals, magnetic moments, electron localizations and the crystal structure. This work may have impact on the understanding of colossal-magneto resistance, superconductivity, multiferroicity and other interesting phenomena in perovskite related materials.
To study these effects you will perform x-ray experiments (resonant and non-resonant diffraction as well as absorption) as a member of a small team. Experiments will be performed at the SLS with unique experimental equipment and at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble.
    Your profile
You have a master in physics and enjoy working in an interdisciplinary, internationally oriented environment and you can easily integrate in a small team. A good command of English is required.
You will be registered as a PhD student at the ETH Zurich. The working place is PSI, Villigen.
