    Description In the Fracture Mechanics/Lightweight Materials and Structures Group of the Institute for Building Materials (IfB) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH-Zẳrich) a PhD position is available in the field of Experimental Micromechanics of Cement.The goal of this SNF-funded project is to measure slow (subcritical) crack velocities in cementitious materials inside an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM). The project involves the development of a loading stage for the ESEM, in-situ measurements of slow crack velocities under a wide range of environmental con***ions, and digital image correlation of the in-situ experiments to characterize processes in the crack-tip region.

    Education The candidate should hold a Masters Degree (or equivalent) in one of the following fields: material science, experimental physics or geo-physics, applied mechanics or civil engineering, with a keen interest in developing and conducting advanced and high-precision laboratory experiments.The SEM-Laboratory at the Institute for Building Materials has State-of-the-Art equipment (a FEI Quanta 200-3D FIB/SEM Dual Beam and a FEI Quanta 600 ESEM). Our staff is international and the working languages are German and English.

    - Enclosures to the hard copy of the applications:

    Description The University of Lugano invites applications to the Organization and Management Theory stream of the PhD program in Economics. Students interested in the broadly defined areas of organization and management theory (OMT), organizational behavior (OB) and business strategy and processes (BPS) are particularly encouraged to apply.
    Successful candidates will join the Center for Organizational research (CORe), the new project-based research center created within the Faculty of Economics. Current research interests represented within the CORe include, but are not limited to, demographic models of organizations in industry, processes of inter-firm mobility, decision-theoretic and ecological models of market entry and organizational survival, system dynamics models of organizational and business processes, the analysis of social networks within and between organizations, simulation models for the study of industrial and corporate change, theories of organizational emergence, growth and innovation.
    Education The position is fully funded by the University of Lugano and by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Admission to the Ph.D. program is highly competitive. Admission decisions are based on the candidates'' background, interests and potential for academic achievement. To satisfy the minimum criteria for consideration, applicants must have completed a Master degree in economics, sociology, management, statistics or a closely related field prior to joining the program. The official language of the Ph.D. program is English. Knowledge of at least one of the Swiss national languages is considered an advantage.

    The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg is the first institute of the Max Planck Society dedicated to engineering sciences. Its objective is to bridge the gap between basic research and industrial applications.     Project: Stochastic Modeling of Cell Populations
    The fundamental understanding of cell populations is still limited. In the project stochastic modeling
    techniques (kinetic Monte-Carlo) shall be employed to enhance the understanding of the dynamics of virus replication in cell populations. The project will be carried out in close cooperation with the href="http://www.mpi-magdeburg.mpg.de/research/groups/bpt">Bioprocess Engineering Group (Prof. U. Reichl) who will provide experimental data.

    A qualified candidate is interested in applied interdisciplinary research and has an academic background in a relevant scientific subject, such as engineering, physics, or computational biology. Previous experience in scientific computing, modelling of complex systems, Monte-Carlo is highly desirable.

    The payment is on the basis of the German Public Salary System (TL-V E13 East). The initial contract has a one year term. Prolongation to a total of three years is intended.     Applications are invited by well-qualified applicants for an MSc (by research) and PhD position in the application of statistical machine learning techniques to anomaly detection in software appliances (firewalls etc).
    Supported by a major manufacturer, the project will involve the development of new approaches for predictive modelling of measured signals, adaptive learning and inference of fault con***ions. The project is supported by a dedicated hardware testbed and as part of the project the developed detection approaches will be implemented in order to evaluate performance in realistic environments.

    OFFERING OF 4 YEAR PHD SCHOLARSHIPS IN BIOINFORMATICS IN TARRAGONA (SPAIN)
    The research group SIPOMICS (SIgnal Processing for OMIC Sciences) is seeking candidates to grant two 4-year PhD scholarships at the Electronic Department of the Rovira i Virgili University of Tarragona (Spain).
    The main research topic of the scholarship can be classified under the general term of Bioinformatics (Signal Processing for Biology). In the thesis, the main tasks of the phD candidate will be the development and application of advanced signal processing algorithms and artificial intelligent data analysis methods to handle data from biomedical instrumentation such as High Resolution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (HR-NMR). The research will be clinically oriented to apply the algorithms to real biomedical applications.
    The research group is tightly related to a Metabolomic Platform recently created which is equipped with state of the art 600 and 500 NMR machines with Cryoprobes and HR-MAS probes for the measuring of biofluids and tissues.
    Tarragona is a medium city (100,000 inhabitants) with a Me***erranean climate and many recreation opportunities (nice beaches, theme parks, touristic resorts and facilities). It is located 100 km Southwest of Barcelona (1 hour drive) and it is well communicated by train, highways and even low cost flights from its own airport.

Their research programme, leading to the degree of PhD, will focus on investigating, developing and validating mathematical methods for guaranteeing cost/performance levels in Optical Burst Switched networks through use of analytic network resource modelling, multi-objective non-linear optimisation techniques and design and implementation of discrete-event simulations.

    We are looking for a PhD student in mathematical ecology, to study evolution in response to exogenous ecosystem changes such as exploitation and climate change. A major part of the work will consist of the development and use of mathematical and computational tools.
    The position is a joint appointment by the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science and the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, and the PhD student is expected to work with and take relevant courses at each of these departments. Depending on the direction in which the PhD student takes his or her research, the position may lead to a degree in mathematics or ecology.
    For this position, strong quantitative skills and an interest in ecology and applied mathematics are required. Candidates need a university Bachelor degree, with a minimum of 120 ECTS in relevant fields such as mathematics, physics, computer science, or ecology.
