    PhD Call for Applications

    Presentation

The Luiss University in Rome, Italy, invites applications for its Doctoral Program in Political Theory. Successful candidates will begin the program in Fall 2011, with three semesters of taught courses, and will be expected to complete their theses within three years. The official language of the program is English (knowledge of Italian is not required). Eight positions are available this year, four of which are funded by a three-year scholarship of 11,000 euros per year.
    Program and requirements

The Doctoral Program in Political Theory is interdisciplinary, and covers four main areas of study: philosophy (ethics and applied philosophy, political and social philosophy, and issues in contemporary philosophy), political theory (ethics of international relations and human rights theories), law (international law, humanitarian law, and international criminal law), and politics and economics (international political economy, development policies, sustainability theories, international relations, and theories of globalization).
Approximately twenty faculty members, including both Italian professors and foreign visiting professors, currently teach on the program, and there are more than thirty doctoral students, half of which are foreign. The program thus has a strongly international character.
Applicants are generally expected to have majored in an area of the social sciences, humanities, or philosophy, although those with degrees in other disciplines may also be considered on the basis of their curricula vitae and research proposals. Successful applicants will begin the program in the Fall semester of 2011, by following three semesters of taught courses. Each semester lasts approximately three months, and students will have approximately 6-10 hours of classes per week during these three semesters. All courses are taught in English.
    Applications

Applications must be presented in the format indicated in the ‘Requirements and applications’ section of the Call for Applications (bando di dottorato). They must be marked ‘Application for the PhD Program in “Political Theory”’, and sent to the following address:
    Ufficio Dottorati di Ricerca
    Direzione Didattica e Ricerca
    Luiss Guido Carli
    Viale Romania, 32
    00197 Rome
    Italy
The deadline for applications is May 30, 2011. (Applications postmarked on or before this date will be accepted.) Applications sent by registered mail must include a return receipt - that is, a form to be compiled by the recipient to confirm the receipt of the application. (Since many countries have their own procedures in this regard, please check this carefully with your local post office.) Only applications sent by registered mail before the above deadline will be considered. With regard to this, compliance with the deadline will be indicated by the postmark of the accepting post office.
In order to apply, the applicant must submit the following:
    • Official transcripts of his/her undergraduate degree and, if appropriate, also his/her Master's degree
    • A writing sample of 5-10,000 words
    • Two reference letters from university professors or recognized experts
    • A curriculum vitae
    • A short research proposal of up to three pages.

The University of Trento is now inviting applications from qualified candidates for 22 PhD Scholarships in its three PhD programmes:

PhD in Economics and Management (9 scholarships) The programme focuses on the fields of decision sciences, organization, human and natural resource management with special attention to methodologies used in a behavioural approach to economic studies. Such an approach is increasingly adopted to generate predictions about market dynamics, particularly in the fields of finance, natural resources and tourism, and consumption, as well as to design organizations and institutions.

PhD in Local Development and Global Dynamics (4 scholarships) The programme focuses on theoretical knowledge of the new characteristics of local development in the context of globalizing societies and on the processes through which the new emerging global codified knowledge has to be re-contextualized and combined with local specificities. Since researching local development in all its complexities requires mastering subjects that range across a wide area, the first year of the programme has a decidedly interdisciplinary character, while subsequently allowing students acquire specialised research skills in their chosen major, also at some of the partner universities.

PhD in Sociology and Social Research (9 scholarships) The programme has a long-standing tra***ion of emphasising theoretically informed empirical research. During the programme, the students will learn how to systematically combine theoretical reflection with qualitative and quantitative empirical research. To this end, it provides an in-depth study of sociological theory by means of direct and detailed comparison of the classic texts and the contemporary debates, as well as by the professional-level teaching of the methodology of social science research and the main techniques of research and empirical analysis.

All programmes are conducted in English and will be taught by members of the university’s multi-national faculty. No tuition fees are charged and the scholarships are adequate to cover living expenses in Trento. Scholarships will be augmented by 50% for authorised research periods spent abroad.
