    Setting New Airlift Standardsõ?Ư
    Airbus Military offers the military air transport world a modern, multi-rôle military airlifter which will replace the ageing fleets of C-130 Hercules and C-160 Transall in service with the air forces around the world. With the A400M, Airbus Military is setting new airlift standards and changing the way in which future military programmes will be managed.
    The A400M, as the new airlifter of the 21st century, will have more than twice the payload and volume of the aircraft it will replace. It will play an essential rôle in enhancing Europe's airlift capabilities, whilst enabling the establishment of common support, training and operational procedures and greater interoperability in multi-national humanitarian and peace-keeping missions.
    The A400M Common Standard Aircraft (CSA) is capable of performing:
    õ? strategic operations (long range, large capacity, high cruise speed)
    õ? tactical missions (soft-field performance, autonomous ground operation, low speed handling, aerial delivery)
    õ? "in-theatre" tanking operations (receiving as well as dispensing fuel)
    The A400M is designed to civil certification standards complemented where appropriate by specific military requirements. The aircraft design incorporates leading state-of-the-art technology including:

    already proven in Airbus

    Performance
    A400M has been designed to provide high strategic mission
    efficiency whilst meeting the demands of tactical operations.
    Speed / Altitude Capability
    The A400M is an economical turboprop aircraft with a cruise
    speed almost as fast as turbofan powered transports.
    Its advanced aerodynamic design, coupled with four
    new generation, high performance turboprops and 8-blade
    propellers provide cruising speeds up to Mach 0.72 at
    37 000ft.
    Field Performance
    For tactical missions, good field performance is a crucial factor for mission success.
    The A400M provides excellent soft field capabilities and requires only a short runway length, both for take-off and landing. In a combat situation where it would land on a semi-prepared forward operating strip and unload all its cargo, the
    A400M would require less than
    3000ft of usable runway.
    The aircraft will be capable of operating into unprepared
    landing strips under adverse meteorological con***ions
    completely independent of ground support. With its 6-wheel
    main gear and high flotation characteristics, the A400M will be
    able to land on soft grass fields over low plasticity clay, a
    performance which far exceeds that of any similar aircraft.
    Aerial Delivery
    For tactical missions, good field performance is a crucial factor for mission success.
    As a tactical airlifter, the A400M is capable of air dropping paratroops and equipment via parachute or gravity extraction. A single load up to 16 tonnes, or multiple loads up to 25 tonnes of total weight, 120 paratroops plus a wedge load of 6 tonnes, up to 20 1-tonne containers or pallets, and heavy, medium, and light stressed platforms can be air dropped.
    The A400M also features simultaneous dropping of paratroops
    and cargo (RAS/Wedge or Door Loads) and Very Low Level
    Extraction (VLLE) of a single load up to 6.35 tonnes, or
    multiple loads up to 19 tonnes of total weight.
    Aerial delivery by gravity extraction can be performed for a
    single load up to 4 tonnes, or multiple loads up to 20 tonnes of
    total weight.
    Range Capability
    The A400M can carry an average military payload of 25 tonnes
    over 3000nm non-stop to military, commercial, or remote,
    unequipped airfields.
    The A400M is also fully equipped for air-to-air refuelling as a
    receiver, and can be converted to the tanker role within 2 hours.

    Cargo Handling
    The entire range of current and anticipated loads defined in the European Staff Requirement are all within A400M's carrying capability. Military loads ranging from armoured combat vehicles and artillery to attack and utility helicopters and civil loads such as excavators and dump trucks can all be accommodated. The A400M cargo box dimensions are optimised for the transportation of heavy vehicles and / or cargo pallets, as well as being easily configured to carry troops, paratroops, or Medevac.
    The A400M cargo handling system allows for pallets and containers to be loaded / unloaded by a single loadmaster, without any special ground support equipment. An optional 5-tonne crane can be installed at the rear of the fuselage allowing loading and unloading of fully loaded military pallets.
    The cargo hold provides enough space to carry nine standard military pallets (88in x 108in) including two loaded on the ramp area. Simultaneously 58 troops can be seated in the side-wall seats. The pallet roller/ restraint system can easily be stowed to provide a flat floor for vehicle loading. Civil pallets (125in-wide) can also be loaded using an optional roller/restraint system.
    The A400M cargo bay can accommodate up to 120 fully equipped troops / paratroops, seated in four longitudinal rows. Paratroops can be dropped from the rear doors or from the ramp. The hold can also be converted for a medical evacuation role (MEDEVAC) allowing
    up to 66 stretchers accompanied by
    10 medical personnel.
    Typical Missions
    There is no such thing as a 'standard mission'. However, many of the A400M's capabilities, both logistic and tactical, can be demonstrated through the use of generic deployment scenarios. . .
    Scenario: Rapid Reaction Force
    Further tension in the Gulf validates the decision to reinforce European troops in the region. There is a strong possibility that further hostilities will develop in the next few days.
    A Rapid Reaction Force consisting of air mobile brigade troops with ad***ional fire support, helicopters and two fighter squadrons is deployed. In all, 7200 personnel, 2500 wheeled and tracked vehicles (including artillery and light armour), 23 helicopters and support material for 24 fighter aircraft are required. The total force of over 17 000 tonnes of equipment is flown to the Gulf within 15 days using 50 A400M transports. All of this equipment can be ready to operate in half a day.
    A number of A400Ms are rapidly converted into tanker role *****pport the deployed fighter aircraft.
