    AC-130 GUNSHIP
    Mission
The AC-130 gunship''s primary missions are close air support, air interdiction and force protection. Missions in close air support are troops in contact, convoy escort and urban operations. Air interdiction missions are conducted against preplanned targets or targets of opportunity. Force protection missions include air base defense and facilities defense.

    Features
These heavily armed aircraft incorporate side-firing weapons integrated with sophisticated sensor, navigation and fire control systems to provide surgical firepower or area saturation during extended loiter periods, at night and in adverse weather. The sensor suite consists of a television sensor, infrared sensor and radar. These sensors allow the gunship to visually or electronically identify friendly ground forces and targets any place, any time. The AC-130U employs synthetic apertures strike radar for long-range target detection and identification. The gunship''s navigational devices include the inertial navigation systems and global positioning system. The AC-130U employs the latest technologies and can attack two targets simultaneously.

    Background
The AC-130H''s call sign is "Spectre." The AC-130U''s call sign is "Spooky. " The U-model is the third generation of C-130 gunships. All gunships evolutionized from the first operational gunship, the AC-47.

The AC-130 gunship has a combat history dating to Vietnam. Gunships destroyed more than 10,000 trucks and were cre***ed with many life-saving close air support missions. During Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada in 1983, AC-130s suppressed enemy air defense systems and attacked ground forces enabling the successful assault of the Point Salines Airfield via airdrop and air land of friendly forces. The AC-130 aircrew earned the Lt. Gen. William H. Tunner Award for the mission.

AC-130s also had a primary role during Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989 when they destroyed Panamanian Defense Force Headquarters and numerous command and control facilities. Aircrews earned the Mackay Trophy for the most meritorious flight of the year and the Tunner Award for their efforts.

During Operation Desert Storm, AC-130s provided close air support and force protection (air base defense) for ground forces. Gunships were also used during operations Continue Hope and United Shield in Somalia, providing close air support for United Nations ground forces. Gunships also played a pivotal role in supporting the NATO mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The AC-130H provided air interdiction against key targets in the Sarajevo area.

In 1997, gunships were diverted from Italy to provide combat air support for U.S. and allied ground troops during the evacuation of American noncombatants in Albania. Gunships also were part of the buildup of U.S. forces in 1998 to convince Iraq to comply with U.N. weapons inspections. More recently, both aircraft have been employed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Gunships provided armed reconnaissance, interdiction and direct support of ground troops engaged with enemy forces.

Đây là hình ảnh chiếc AC-130A:

On 15 December 1964 an entirely new weapons system was introduced into combat in Vietnam. The first AC-47 gunship took to the air from Bien Hoa Air Base carrying an armament of three 7.62mm General Electric SUU-11A miniguns, each capable of firing 6,000 rounds per minute. The ''Spooky'' was an instant success in breaking up enemy attacks on hamlets and other defensive positions, and within a year substantial numbers of rehabilitated ''Gooney Birds'' were in action throughout the combat area.
In Sep. 1967, the USAF''s prototype AC-130A gunship was sent to South Vietnam for combat tests. However, its commercially-built fire control computer failed almost immediately so an urgent telegram was sent to the U.S. for a replacement. It was needed for installation in the AC-130A at Okinawa within 10 days.
Wing Commander T.C. Pinkerton, a British Royal Air Force officer on exchange duty at the Avionics Laboratory at Wright Field, immediately designed a replacement computer, and Mr. Herman Lafferty of the lab took on the priority task of building it. He worked two days to construct it, with Wg. Cmdr. Pinkerton finishing the job on the morning of the third day. The RAF officer then packed and shipped the computer to Okinawa without being able to test it. Upon its arrival in Okinawa, the unit was installed in the AC-130A and it worked perfectly. During the following two years that it was used in South East Asia (SEA), it was cre***ed with aiding in the destruction of more than 400 enemy supply trucks.

Tiền thân của AC-130 là chiếc AC-47 Spooky Gunship:
    Douglas AC-47 "Spooky" Gunships
    The Record
From 1964 to 1969, the AC-47s successfully defended 3,926 hamlets, outposts or forts. They fired over 97 million rounds and killed over 5,300 enemy soldiers. No outpost or village under gunship protection was ever lost to the enemy. Typical was the defense of the embattled DUC LAP compound in Quang Duc Province. Major Daniel Rehn, pilot of Spooky 41, observed:
When we arrived, the buildings in the compound were all afire and the men were grounded in a blockhouse below the burning operations center. I set up a quick orbit of the area and began firing on targets about 200 to 300 meters from the camp. Almost immediately we began receiving intense AA fire from four points. I began by firing a long burst at a target from my mini-guns but when the tracers started to fly close to us, I moved to another altitude to peck with short bursts at the enemy locations.
For several days, the gunships shot 761,044 rounds and dropped 1,162 flares. Up to four AC-47s worked the area simultaneously. The AC-47s not only devastated the attacking enemy troops but stiffened the confidence of defenders, particularly at night. As the men at DUC LAP put it, Spooky truly became their "Guardian Angel."
During a night defense of a hamlet in the Mekong River Delta, a reporter from the Stars and Stripes watched an AC-47 attack from inside the fortitfications.
Upon witnessing the wrath that the AC-47 brought down on the VC attackers that night, he reported that visual effect of the tracers, 1 in every 5 rounds or 20 per second, gave the appearance of dragon''s breath. He also tied the roar of the guns into the description. Upon reading the account in the Stars and Stripes, the CO of the 1st Commando Squadron exclaimed "Well, I''ll be damned! Puff, the Magic Dragon." from a child''s song recently popularized in the U.S. by the trio Peter, Paul and Mary. Captured VC documents later told of orders not to attack the Dragon as weapons are useless and it will only infuriate the monster.
The Puff carried 21,000 rounds and three 7.62mm mini-guns with a fast (6,000 rounds per minute) or slow (3,000 rounds per minute) rate of fire, with 7 crewmembers (2 pilots, 1 navigator, 2 gunners, 1 load master and 1 flight engineer), it operated typically at 3,000 ft., 130 knots airspeed, without armor or escorts and carried 24 to 56 flares, manually thrown out the door.
Later gunships included the Spectre (AC-130), Shadow (AC-119G) and Stinger (AC-119K) with increases in airspeed, armor, altitudes, and computer aided guns. The 57 AC-47s stripped away the enemy''s advantage of picking out friendly positions to strike and overrun at night.
    Medal of Honor Spooky
On 24 February 1969, Spooky 71 was hit by enemy mortar fire while defending Long Binh. Airman First Class John L. Levitow severely injured with shrapnel, saved the aircraft and crew by throwing an ignited flare through the open cargo door. For this action he received the Medal of Honor.
