NEAR AJDABIYAH, Libya, March 17 (Reuters) - Libyan rebels have fought back against Muammar Gaddafi's troops around the eastern town of Ajdabiyah, hampering their push towards the insurgent capital Benghazi.
Government forces captured Ajdabiyah, 150 km (90 miles) south of Benghazi on the Gulf of Sirte, on Tuesday after most of its rebel defenders retreated from a heavy artillery barrage.
One rebel officer said on Wednesday the town had been lost and the fighters who remained had handed over their weapons. But some apparently refused *****rrender or flee.
By Wednesday evening, residents said the rebels held the centre of town while forces loyal to Gaddafi were mostly on its eastern outskirts.
Jibril al-Huweidi, a doctor at Benghazi's al-Jalaa Hospital, said he heard from ambulance drivers coming in from Ajdabiyah that they could shuttle back and forth without much problem.
"Only the eastern part of Ajdabiyahis controlled by Gaddafi's men," he said.
"There are a couple of tanks there that sporadically fire at the city. But Ajdabiyah's city centre and other access points are peaceful and not one man from Gaddafi's force wanders around."
Another Benghazi resident, Faiza Ali, said she spoke to relatives in Ajdabiyah on Wednesday evening. "They said they are fine."
Rebels had ambushed Gaddafi forces outside the city and were still battling them, she said.
Earlier on Wednesday, weary government soldiers returning from the frontlines told journalists that they were meeting renewed resistance from rebel positions near the city.

REBELS HOLD OUT
A rebel spokesman in Benghazi, Mustafa Gheriani, told Reuters by telephone that they were holding Ajdabiyah.
"But the fighting is fierce. His supply lines are stretched so he can't push on from Ajdabiyah. We've got some surprises in store. We're going to fight on and we're going to win."
Refugees from Ajdabiyah described the fighting to a Reuters reporter when they reached the town of Salum on the Egyptian border.
"I left Ajdabiyah last night after I saw jets bombing the city. I was terrified," Issam Abdul Sattar, 34, said.
The fighting around Ajdabiyah will slow the advance of Gaddafi's forces if they want to secure their rearguard and supply lines.
Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam earlier had boasted that his troops were about to deal a mortal blow to Benghazi, the seat of a provisional rebel national council opposed to his father's 41-year-rule.
He also scoffed at the protracted discussions among world powers on imposing a no-fly zone over Libya.
"The military operations are finished. In 48 hours everything will be over. Our forces are close to Benghazi. Whatever decision is taken, it will be too late," Saif told Euronews TV channel.
In Benghazi, the mood was a mixture of defiance and nervousness, with some citizens predicting a bloodbath and others confident the rebels would still snatch victory.

FOREIGN DOCTORS PULL OUT
Aid organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres said the violence had forced it to withdraw its staff from Benghazi.
"Security con***ions have made it effectively impossible for medical teams to travel safely to areas where the fighting has created the greatest need," it said.
The rebel army, made up largely of young volunteers with little training and defectors from the government military, has been hammered by the artillery, tanks and warplanes of Gaddafi's troops and looks now to be relying on guerrilla hit-and-run tactics to stay in the fight.
The capture of Ajdabiyah, an important road junction, would give Gaddafi forces several options in a region where a British army led by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery fought major battles against German General Erwin Rommel in World War Two.
As well as heading north up the coastal highway to Benghazi, loyalist forces could strike east through the desert to Tobruk, 400 km (250 km) away, to isolate the rebel capital.
On the road between Tobruk and Salum, rebels manned several checkpoints. The border was still under their control.

AJDABIYA, Libya – Libyan rebels battled to hold a strategic eastern city against a punishing offensive by forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi on Wednesday, voicing anger and frustration at the West for not coming to their aid. At the same time, government troops heavily shelled the last main rebel bastion near the capital.

Charred vehicles, bullet-riddled pickup trucks and an overturned tank littered the desert highway where pro-Gadhafi forces had fought up to the entrance of the key eastern city of Ajdabiya. An Associated Press Television News cameraman counted at least three bodies by the side of the road, evidence of fierce battles. Government troops were bringing in a stream of truckloads of ammunition, rockets and supplies – signs of an intensified effort by the Libyan leader to retake control of the country he has ruled with an iron fist for more than four decades.

The rebels lashed out at the West as the latest international effort to impose a no-fly zone over Libya stumbled along. Supporters in the U.N. Security Council were trying to push through a resolution to impose such a move along with other measures aimed at preventing Gadhafi from bombing his people, but Russia and Germany have expressed doubts.

“People are fed up. They are waiting impatiently for an international move,” said Saadoun al-Misrati, a rebel spokesman in the city of Misrata, the last rebel-held city in western Libya, which came under heavy shelling Wednesday.

“What Gadhafi is doing, he is exploiting delays by international community. People are very angry that no action is being taken against Gadhafi’s weaponry,” he said.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged all sides to accept an immediate cease-fire. He warned Gadhafi’s forces against a march on Benghazi, the opposition’s de facto capital in the east, saying that “a campaign to bombard such an urban center would massively place civilian lives at risk.”

Ajdabiya, a city of 140,000, is the gateway to the rebel-held eastern half of Libya and if Gadhafi troops take it, Benghazi would likely be their next target. A regime force advancing from the west has been relentlessly bombarding Ajdabiya the last two days, raining rockets and artillery and tank shells on the city, sending most of its population fleeing.

Libya’s deputy U.N. ambassador Ibrahim Dabbashi, who is supporting the opposition, told reporters in New York on Wednesday he expects a no-fly resolution to be adopted, hopefully “within the next 10 hours” and with a provision that will also allow air strikes.

He said according to information the Libyan Mission has received, Gadhafi is preparing for two operations: One against the eastern city of Ajdabiya, which already is under siege using mercenaries in more than 400 vehicles that already are en route, and one against mountain villages in the west where tanks, heavy artillery and other weapons are being gathered for an assault.

Dabbashi said according to his information, Gaddhafi has given instructions to “destroy everything and kill whoever you find in Ajdabiya, and don’t spare any lives,” and to destroy all the Berber villages which Dabbashi said would constitute “ethnic cleansing.”

Habib al-Obeidi, a doctor at Jalaa Hospital in Benghazi, said that a colleague in Ajdabiya had told him 25 people were killed when pro-Gadhafi forces struck civilian cars fleeing the city. That report could not be independently confirmed.

Hundreds of pro-Gadhafi troops were lined up with dozens of tanks and other heavy equipment at the arches over the highway marking Ajdabiya’s western gates. The AP and other journalists brought to the scene by government escorts saw regime forces bringing in large truckloads of ammunition and equipment – a sign that that the troops were gearing up to try to sweep through Ajdabiya and likely beyond.

As journalists arrived, the troops at the gates fired automatic weapons and anti-aircraft guns in the air, waving green flags and chanting, “God, Moammar, Libya: That is enough.” Graffiti on nearby buildings that read “Moammar the dog” had beam painted over with new graffiti of “long live Moammar.” Some buildings had bullet holes, and a bloodstained green army jacket was left on the ground along with discarded ammunition boxes.

Rebel fighters, however, continued to hold out in the city, 480 miles southeast of Tripoli, even using their meager supply of antiquated aircraft to strike Gadhafi’s troops.

Rebels in Benghazi had sent reinforcements, moving in within a few miles of Ajdabiya and battling with government forces on the eastern side of the city, said a local activist, Abdul-Bari Zwei, and another activist in Benghazi in touch with fighters on the ground in the city.

Đến khi bọn phiến loạn này thua chổng vó, căn cứ cuối cùng sắp bị oánh tan thì lại kêu gào ngừng bắn...
Thế giới bây giờ loạn hết cả rồi, bao nhiêu thứ được gán cho mỹ từ "dân chủ", "tự do", "độc lập","nhân quyền"... đúng là chỉ mang tính hư ảo, là món đồ mà mấy thằng sen đầm "xài xong rồi bỏ"...
