    Personal Goal Setting
    Find direction. Live your life your way.
    Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivating yourself to turn this vision of the future into reality.
    The process of setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know where you have to concentrate your efforts. You''ll also quickly spot the distractions that would otherwise lure you from your course.
    More than this, properly-set goals can be incredibly motivating, and as you get into the habit of setting and achieving goals, you''ll find that your self-confidence builds fast.
    Achieving More With Focus
    Goal setting techniques are used by top-level athletes, successful business-people and achievers in all fields. They give you long-term vision and short-term motivation. They focus your acquisition of knowledge and help you to organize your time and your resources so that you can make the very most of your life.
    By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals. You can see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind. By setting goals, you will also raise your self-confidence, as you recognize your ability and competence in achieving the goals that you have set.
    Starting to Set Personal Goals
    Goals are set on a number of different levels: First you create your "big picture" of what you want to do with your life, and what large-scale goals you want to achieve. Second, you break these down into the smaller and smaller targets that you must hit so that you reach your lifetime goals. Finally, once you have your plan, you start working to achieve it.
    We start this process with your Lifetime Goals, and work down to the things you can do today to start moving towards them.
    (If you want to fast-track your goal setting and get the most from it, then either join our Design Your Life program or talk to one of our coaches.)
    Your Lifetime Goals
    The first step in setting personal goals is to consider what you want to achieve in your lifetime (or at least, by a time at least, say, 10 years in the future) as setting Lifetime Goals gives you the overall perspective that shapes all other aspects of your decision making.
    To give a broad, balanced coverage of all important areas in your life, try to set goals in some of these categories (or in categories of your own, where these are important to you):
    *
    Artistic:
    Do you want to achieve any artistic goals? If so, what?
    *
    Attitude:
    Is any part of your mindset holding you back? Is there any part of the way that you behave that upsets you? If so, set a goal to improve your behavior or find a solution to the problem.
    *
    Career:
    What level do you want to reach in your career?
    *
    Education:
    Is there any knowledge you want to acquire in particular? What information and skills will you need to achieve other goals?
    *
    Family:
    Do you want to be a parent? If so, how are you going to be a good parent? How do you want to be seen by a partner or by members of your extended family?
    *
    Financial:
    How much do you want to earn by what stage?
    *
    Physical:
    Are there any athletic goals you want to achieve, or do you want good health deep into old age? What steps are you going to take to achieve this?
    *
    Pleasure:
    How do you want to enjoy yourself? - you should ensure that some of your life is for you!
    *
    Public Service:
    Do you want to make the world a better place? If so, how?
    Spend some time brainstorming these, and then select one goal in each category that best reflects what you want to do. Then consider trimming again so that you have a small number of really significant goals on which you can focus.
    As you do this, make sure that the goals that you have set are ones that you genuinely want to achieve, not ones that your parents, family, or employers might want (if you have a partner, you probably want to consider what he or she wants, however make sure you also remain true to yourself!)
    Starting to Achieve Your Lifetime Goals
    Once you have set your lifetime goals, set a 25 year plan of smaller goals that you should complete if you are to reach your lifetime plan. Then set a 5 year plan, 1 year plan, 6 month plan, and 1 month plan of progressively smaller goals that you should reach to achieve your lifetime goals. Each of these should be based on the previous plan.
    Then create a daily to-do list of things that you should do today to work towards your lifetime goals. At an early stage these goals may be to read books and gather information on the achievement of your goals. This will help you to improve the quality and realism of your goal setting.
    Finally review your plans, and make sure that they fit the way in which you want to live your life.
    Staying on Course
    Once you have decided your first set of plans, keep the process going by reviewing and updating your to-do list on a daily basis. Periodically review the longer term plans, and modify them to reflect your changing priorities and experience.
    An easy way of doing this is to use the goal-setting software like GoalPro 6 on a daily basis (you can download a free trial version of GoalPro from Success Studios web site.) GoalPro uses a similar set of categories to ones we recommend - either use theirs, or adapt the software to use ours.
    Goal Setting Tips
    The following broad guidelines will help you to set effective goals:
    * State each goal as a positive statement: Express your goals positively - ''Execute this technique well'' is a much better goal than ''Don''t make this stupid mistake.''
    * Be precise: Set a precise goal, putting in dates, times and amounts so that you can measure achievement. If you do this, you will know exactly when you have achieved the goal, and can take complete satisfaction from having achieved it.
    * Set priorities: When you have several goals, give each a priority. This helps you to avoid feeling overwhelmed by too many goals, and helps to direct your attention to the most important ones.
    * Write goals down: This crystallizes them and gives them more force.
    * Keep operational goals small: Keep the low-level goals you are working towards small and achievable. If a goal is too large, then it can seem that you are not making progress towards it. Keeping goals small and incremental gives more opportunities for reward. Derive today''s goals from larger ones.
    * Set performance goals, not outcome goals: You should take care to set goals over which you have as much control as possible. There is nothing more dispiriting than failing to achieve a personal goal for reasons beyond your control. In business, these could be bad business environments or unexpected effects of government policy. In sport, for example, these reasons could include poor judging, bad weather, injury, or just plain bad luck. If you base your goals on personal performance, then you can keep control over the achievement of your goals and draw satisfaction from them.
    * Set realistic goals: It is important to set goals that you can achieve. All sorts of people (employers, parents, media, society) can set unrealistic goals for you. They will often do this in ignorance of your own desires and ambitions. Alternatively you may set goals that are too high, because you may not appreciate either the obstacles in the way, or understand quite how much skill you need to develop to achieve a particular level of performance.
    This is something we focus on in detail in our "Design Your Life" program, which not only helps you decide your goals, it then helps you set the vivid, compelling goals you need if you''re to make the most of your goal setting.
    SMART Goals:
    A useful way of making goals more powerful is to use the SMART mnemonic. While there are plenty of variants, SMART usually stands for:
    * S Specific
    * M Measurable
    * A Attainable
    * R Relevant
    * T Time-bound
    For example, instead of having ?oto sail around the world? as a goal, it is more powerful to say ?oTo have completed my trip around the world by December 31, 2015.? Obviously, this will only be attainable if a lot of preparation has been completed beforehand!
    Achieving Goals
    When you have achieved a goal, take the time to enjoy the satisfaction of having done so. Absorb the implications of the goal achievement, and observe the progress you have made towards other goals. If the goal was a significant one, reward yourself appropriately. All of this helps you build the self-confidence you deserve!
    With the experience of having achieved this goal, review the rest of your goal plans:
    *
    If you achieved the goal too easily, make your next goals harder.
    *
    If the goal took a dispiriting length of time to achieve, make the next goals a little easier.
    *
    If you learned something that would lead you to change other goals, do so.
    *
    If you noticed a deficit in your skills despite achieving the goal, decide whether to set goals to fix this.
    Failure to meet goals does not matter much, as long as you learn from it. Feed lessons learned back into your goal setting program.
    Remember too that your goals will change as you get older. Adjust them regularly to reflect growth in your knowledge and experience, and if goals do not hold any attraction any longer, then let them go.
    Key points:
    Goal setting is an important method of:
    *
    Deciding what is important for you to achieve in your life;
    *
    Separating what is important from what is irrelevant, or a distraction;
    *
    Motivating yourself; and
    *
    Building your self-confidence, based on successful achievement of goals.
    If you don''t already set goals, do so, starting now. As you make this technique part of your life, you''ll find your career accelerating, and you''ll wonder how you did without it!

    Planning your future
    by Erin Malone on 2004/02/26 | [10 Comments]
    ?oIt?Ts not the plan that is important, it?Ts the planning.?
    ?"Graeme Edwards
    I have been thinking a lot about career growth lately, and as a manager, have been generally concerned with making sure there are growth opportunities for my staff, regardless of their level or the point they are at in their career.
    This often means rearranging teams so that a staff member might be stretched to grow in a new skill?"as a designer, as a mentor and leader, or just in a new domain (i.e., moving from a music product to a mail product). In ad***ion, I am always looking for networking, conference, and classroom opportunities that would benefit not only me, but my staff as well.
    But not everyone has a manager that is concerned about her career growth, and there are even times when day-to-day work concerns are a priority and career growth needs are far in the back of my mind. As a matter of fact, for most of my career, I never had anyone watching out for me. For the first part of my career, I don?Tt even think I thought much about my long-term career. I just seemed to happen into new opportunities that taught me new skills and kept me growing and challenged. But there was no plan, no goal other than to stay challenged.
    The point is, in the big picture, no one is going to look after your career for you, but you.
    A few years ago, a manager of mine gave me the assignment to work on a five-year career plan. I had never created a career plan before (not even to plot out goals for the coming year), so I was completely unprepared for how and why I should do this. Luckily, she shared her own plan as a guide, but I still agonized through the exercise. Over time I have become aware of how important this was for me to do. Looking and assessing where I was at the time, really thinking about what I wanted to be doing in the future, gave me the tools to make the right decisions to make things happen.
    After I was done, I realized that most of what I put down for a five-year plan could be done in a year. But it took writing it down to see that and to make it happen. This also was a good tool for working with my boss to craft training and work opportunities for me to meet my goals. I also made sure that these goals included life and personal goals as well as career goals. The older I get the more I realize that these are intertwined and success in one space brings success to others. Work/Life balance matters.
    In an effort to make this anecdote meaningful to you, I?Td like to share the steps and some resources I used to help me prepare my five-year goals.
    The Template:
    1. Your Name
    2. Today?Ts Date
    This is important as you reflect back on this document. This will become a touchstone for your growth and a reminder of who you were as you look back at what was important to you in this point in time.
    3. 3?"6 Months
    * Start small.
    * Think about short-term goals that are easily achieved but will also help move you towards the longer-term goals.
    * Include some tangible goals (i.e., ship a product that I acted as lead designer for).
    4. 6?"12 Months
    * Start thinking bigger here?"this is planning for a year out.
    * What new skills do you want to learn?
    * What new ideas do you want to share with others?
    * What changes do you want to make? Put them down here along with the steps needed to take to make them happen.
    5. Beyond 12 Months
    * Capture specific plans that you know may take more than a year to get to or accomplish. For me, it was to work on my Dr. Leslie book. I discussed the idea with a writing partner 3 years ago, but it is only now coming to fruition with an actual proposal in hand and a potential publisher.
    * Be realistic but not afraid to reach. Visualize success in areas you may have little control over. Don?Tt be afraid to write down a desired goal that may be a stretch.
    6. Longer-term Goals
    * This is the area to think out for the next 3?"5 years, including life beyond the company or situation you are currently in. For me, I listed ?oteaching again? as a goal. This reminds me that I want to do this and I need to make certain decisions and changes in order to make it happen.
    If I decide at a later time, that I don?Tt really want to do this, I should remove it off the plan.
    7. Opportunities to Explore at Your Company
    * List all the training and coaching opportunities relevant and currently available at your company.
    * Note relationships that need to be cultivated at your company in order to meet success.
    Note: This obviously may not apply if you are an independent consultant. Think about other opportunities that might be available through professional associations and networking instead.
    8. Skills to Develop
    * Project what skills you need to develop to reach the goals you listed in the first part of this exercise.
    * What other skills do you need, besides the ones you have now, to attain your goal?
    Since I am a manager and this is the area in which I have been growing, I listed things such as Confidence and Effectiveness?"along with ideas on how to master these more intangible skills.
    Over the last couple of years, I have purposely put myself into situations to gain confidence?"especially when giving presentations. Think about starting slow and building on your successes.
    In ad***ion, I also listed skills of associated/allied roles that I would like to learn in order to make myself a more well-rounded and effective manager in my company.
    9. What I Care About in a Work Environment
    * This may seem frivolous or not important to the task at hand, but it serves to remind you of the values you need to share with the company you work for. As you grow or the company changes this can help guide you when you need to make a change.
    10. Personal Goals
    * Don?Tt forget the personal goals that you need to weave into your life. It never hurts to write these down as a reminder of work/life balance and of the things that are really important to you as a person.
    You can use the finished plan as a tool when working on performance goals with your boss. Letting her know what you want out of the job is as important as your manager being clear on what is expected of you. Reminding her regularly of your goals is also important, as we tend to fall into patterns of behavior that may not be best for our long-term career plans.
    I pull my career plan out periodically to check off what I have accomplished, and have begun adding to the long-term section. I see how I have grown and what areas I still need to work on in order to reach the goals I have set. I can also see that some things that were important to me three years ago are no longer important, and that there are new areas of growth I am cultivating.
    The point of this exercise is to come up with a realistic plan within the framework of your interests and career path. The list should be visited regularly and modified as you reach goals or when goals are no longer important to you. The plan should help you shape a vision towards reaching a future destination and remind you that success does not happen by chance.

    Thực tế là như vậy boyhn81 ạ. Vì CLB hoạt động được hơn 2 tháng rồi nhưng mới chỉ thu phí 1 lần = 20.000 VND/ người. Nhưng khoản phí đó không phải là để in ấn tài liệu, nước nôi cho CLB thời gian vừa qua đâu. Khoản phí đó được sử dụng để tổ chức cho các bạn nữ ở BE hôm 20 tháng 10 vừa roài đó, để mua quà, tổ chức 20-10 và ăn uống đập phá vào hôm outdoor 20-10 đó.
    Ngay cả tài liệu WTO mà hôm rồi tôi phát cho mọi người là do tôi in ra đấy ạ. Và tôi cũng là người bỏ tiền túi ra để copy tài liệu đó đó chứ không phải tiền quỹ của CLB đâu ạ.
    Thời gian tới sẽ tiến hành thu phí hội viên, nhưng việc thu phí này là để phục vụ cho chính các bạn. Khoản phí sẽ không nhiều, 15.000 VND gì đó. Mục đích là để mua giấy bút, in ấn tài liệu, mua quà sinh nhật cho các thành viên và nếu có dư rả, thì có thể tổ chức ăn uống, karaoke hoặc các hoạt động ngoài trời như dã ngoại, tham quan gì đó...
    CLB BE có một thuận lợi rất lớn hiện nay đó là chúng ta không phải trả tiền thuê phòng off. Đây là sự hỗ trợ của trung tâm anh ngữ Việt - Anh. Và trong thời gian tới, trung tâm còn tiếp tục hỗ trợ nhiều hơn nữa cơ ạ.

    Oài, ở đời làm gì có cái gì free hả bạn. BE chúng mình thu phí để in ấn tài liệu và mua một vài thứ lặt vặt:giấy, bút, phấn, nước... phục vụ cho những buổi off được tốt hơn.
    Fee chỉ có khoảng 10-15k/người thì cũng không phải là nhiều ấy nhỉ
    Nghe bác Vĩnh nói sắp có thêm tài trợ về projector mà máu quá
