Hôm nọ có bạn hỏi mình về vấn đề waiting list của Chevening. Hôm nay vào đọc và nghĩ có thể 1 số bạn khác cũng quan tâm nên mình trích lại 1 phần trả lời của mình gửi tới bạn kia (ko phải Vista_trader).
Có 1 số năm người vừa đc học bổng Chevening cũng đc học bổng Fulbright hoặc ADS. Thường mọi người chọn Fulbright, có 1 vài trường hợp chọn ADS. Kết quả là người ở waiting list của Chevening đc đôn lên.
Chị ko biết các năm khác. Năm của chị có 3 người vào waiting list của Chevening. Sau đó 2 người trong main list đc Fulbright, 1 chị bỏ Chevening chọn Fulbright, nên thằng bạn thân của chị đc vào danh sách chính thức. Sau đó Hội đồng Anh xin đc thêm funding và tống luôn đc 2 đồng chí còn lại ở waiting list sang Anh. Túm lại năm đó waiting list đi hết.
Nhưng năm đó đến tháng 9 Hội đồng Anh mới thông báo xin đc thêm funding, làm 2 người đàn ông may mắn kia cuống cuồng hoãn đám cưới và thay vào đó vội vàng đi đăng ký kết hôn.
Năm 2007 thì có 2 vợ chồng bạn học của chị đc Chevening, vợ đc full (nàng apply ngành human rights), chồng đc partial (hình như international relations, not sure). Cùng năm đó 2 vợ chồng đều đc ADS nên cùng bỏ Chevening để sang Úc. Chị đoán hẳn là có 2 người nào đó ở waiting list cảm ơn 2 vợ chồng nàng lắm đấy.
Theo chị biết về những năm trước thì người trong waiting list vẫn apply trường và chuẩn bị như người trong main list. Chỉ là ko chắc có đi đc ko thôi. Nói chung là giờ chỉ trông vào may mắn thôi em ạ.
PS: Khi nào mình có thời gian vào ttvnol sẽ trả lời những câu hỏi còn lại.

Theo như những gì chị quan sát về học bổng Chevening trong vài năm qua thì cửa của em ko rộng đâu. Nguyên nhân chủ yếu là em nằm quá xa target groups của Chevening. Em hoàn toàn có thể đc vào vòng phỏng vấn, nhưng để đc học bổng thì hơi khó.
Anyway ko gõ thì cửa ko mở. Nếu là chị chị cứ thử.

Vâng em cảm ơn chị. Em cũng nghĩ là khó. Nếu em làm cho công ty liên doanh trong khoảng 1,5 năm rùi sau đó chuyển về một cơ quan nhà nước nào đó thì kinh nghiệm làm việc của em có được tính là 2 năm và vẫn đảm bảo target của Chevening là làm cho cơ quan nhà nước ko ạ?
Anyway, em hỏi một chút là 2 tháng (đi làm cả ngày) thì mình có kịp để làm hồ sơ ko ạ?

Năm 2007 thì em biết tất cả 24 người trong list chevening.
Khẳng định 100% là năm ấy ko có ai dc mà lại bỏ cả, chỉ có những người (cuối list) ko dc thôi. Cũng chẳng có đôi vợ chồng nào cả.
Có lẽ chị gì nhầm năm roài.

Thứ nhất: Vấn đề còn là cơ quan nhà nước nào em ạ. Vì nhiều cơ quan nhà nước "hoành tráng" lại ko nằm trong là target groups của Chevening. Trong khi các NGOs như Oxfam và ActionAid thì lại có.
Thứ hai: Cơ quan nhà nước nhưng ở bộ phận nào nữa. Ví dụ nếu em làm cho Vietcombank nhưng ở bộ phận nhân sự thì...
Thứ ba: Nếu GPA của em cao vậy, lại đang làm liên doanh thì chị suggest em xem thêm học bổng ADS: www.ads.edu.vn.
Tuy bản thân chị ko đánh giá cao ADS, nhưng ko thể phủ nhận đc là overall ranking của nhiều trường ở Úc như Australian National Uni hay Uni of Melbourne cao hơn nhiều các trường tốt ở Anh có trong danh sách tham gia Chevening như Leeds, Durham.

Hy vọng bạn mypleasure và các bạn Chevening scholars khác có thể có thời gian tham gia thread này. Nói thật là mình luôn ngại trả lời các câu hỏi về Chevening vì mình ko có first-hand experience (và mình luôn nói rõ điều đó), chỉ là quan sát của cá nhân qua nói chuyện, tán gẫu với bạn bè và người quen. Nhưng ko trả lời thì cũng chẳng thấy bạn Chevening scholar nào trả lời cả. Đến khi cung cấp thông tin chưa chính xác thì có người vào sửa ngay mình cũng thấy ngại.

Trả lời: Vế 1 chị ko trả lời đc. Theo như chị nhớ (có thể nhớ sai) Chevening ko nói rõ (như học bổng ADB) về trường hợp này.

Tùy em thôi. Nếu em quá thích (có vẻ ko phải vậy) hoặc rất tự tin (là mình chắc chắn) đc 1 học bổng nào đó thì chẳng cần mất công + tiền apply các học bổng khác làm gì.
Với học bổng nào chị ko biết, chứ với Chevening thì em có tập trung toàn lực cũng khó mà chắc chắn là sẽ trở thành winner.

Về việc có phải xin lại LoRs ko?
Trả lời: Có, đương nhiên.
Về việc có phải đổi người giới thiệu ko?
Trả lời: ko phải, nhưng nếu tìm đc người giới thiệu xịn hơn, phù hợp hơn thì nên.

"Tài liệu luyện thi" này đc viết từ đầu năm 2004, do người Việt viêt, cho những người vào vòng phỏng vấn của BP/Leeds/Chev. Nhưng cách phỏng vấn của Chevening cũng giống như vậy và ko thay đổi cho đến nay. Năm nay có như thế ko thì cũng khó nói...
You are shortlisted, what to expect about the interview?
1. Overview:
The interview is the very final and decisive part of your bid for your scholarship and you must be well prepared for it. By no means should you be overworried or panic ?" always remember that your winning chance is high, so be self confident and wise.
Until this stage, you must have surpassed hundreds. There are about 12 candidates or shortlisters summoned for the interview out of which four will be selected. This is fair enough.
During an interview, a panel will judge you based on the various factors of impression and understanding that you may bring to them: appearance, answers and presentation skills. I will try to list out the things you should remember when dealing with this kind of interview.
3. The panel:
The panel usually consists of four members: The director of the British Council ?" David Cordingly (or the Director of the Cultural Section, in case the BC boss is absent); the cultural attache of the British Embassy in Hanoi and two representatives of BP (one will ask you questions and the other just take notes of what?Ts going on). Normally each member of the panel will take charge of certain topics according to their interests and responsibilities.
For example, the British Council will normally ask you questions about your thinking about education in the UK, how you will deal with new people and a new culture there, how you will deal with specific situations that migh arise in your college life, how you will explain to friends from around the world about Vietnam.
The Embassy will be likely to be more concerned about your political thinking: how do you think Vietnam has been moving forward (or backward) as a country, what do you think about democracy, freedom of speech or religion problems. They want to diagnose whether you agree with the Government lines or not, your solutions and expectations.
The BP company will ask you further on your career plans, why you want the scholarship so badly. Remember that your answerss should be in line with your statement of purpose you lodged to BP and British Council back in January. These are quite easy questions, usualy asked in the latter part of the interview and you you know some background about BP, what?Ts it doin in VN, and the BP scholars and even something about Leeds University.
4. Presentation, answering questions:
Throughout the interview you must show confidence, wisdom and persuasiveness. Because this is a mutual personal interaction between you and the panel, you must make sure that you can present your ideas well and convince them in the best way you can deliver.
When answering a question, listen carfefully to the question posed and think carefully about it. If possible, jot down the questions you hear on a blank note (you are allowed to bring a pencil/pen and a note). You do not need to quick answers to every question posed. Some reasoning, ?oa good pause? and eye contacts may be a good warm-up. Even if you can give a quick answer, pls slowdown and begin to answer the question in a solid, articulate way. It makes sense to the panel, who may think that you are thoughtful enough and have a better critical mind.
Pls sit comfortably (cross-legged where possible) and you can lean backward a little to show them that you are quite confident, laxed and self-collective.
Gestures and eye contacts are normally appreciated by the panel. Be a good presenter both verbally and physically! When you answer a question, make sure your eyes also meet not only the one who asks the question, but also the ones on the sides. Only by ensuring good eye contacts with all of them can you likely get approval from across the panel. Of course you should look at the main questioner most often, just look straight into his or her yes.
Of course your answers should match what you had written in your statement of purpose. But sometimes pls expect things beyond your essay ?" which means you will have to deliver brand-new answers ?" it requires your creativity, imagination and knowledge. In any case, keep them in a logical order, and try to epxress them convincingly. It will have lots to do with current affairs, your knowledge about social, political and economic matters ?" but don?Tt worry, be a positive thinker?.
After you answer all of their questions, you will be asked to ask the panel one question, so pls have a question in mind, whatever you can thin of. Normally people ask questions concerning the scholarship itself. You can also ask about what do they expect from BP chevening scholars when coming back to VN after the course?It?Ts all up to you what to ask.
Last but not least, when you are ready to finish your interview (which lasts for half an hour) don?Tt forget to thank the panel and smile. You are expected to say something like: ?oThanks for your questions and consideration?.? or just ?oThank you for your exciting questions.?
I list here some questions normally asked by the panel:
- Why do you want to study in the UK?
- What are the challenges for you personally studying in the UK?
- If you have a chance to study in a UK university, surrounded by other international students, what will tell them about your country?
- How will you deal with possible culture gap when studying in the UK?
- What do you hope to achieve through this course?
- What changes do you think you can make in your organisation after your study?
- How will the younger generation succeed the last generation of employees in your organisation?
- How do you define leadership? How can you exercise leadership in your organisation?
- Do you have a plan for your career in the future? Where will you be in 5 years? 10 years? Or 20 years?
- What do you think about the future of Vietnam? Do you think Vietnam should allow a multi-party system? What do you think about the current state of democracy? What will be the criteria for human rights and democracy in a transitory economy like Vietnam?
- Vietnam is bidding for a WTO membership and it has joined major groupings like ASEAN and APEC. How do you interpret the implications of Vietnam?Ts integration into the world?
- As you stated in your statement ASEAN is one of your main interests. Can you elaborate why you have chosen to focus on this topic?
There can be more questions they can ask. You can prepare beforehand, but remember, don?Tt be too wordy ?" sometimes words will kill you. So just answer every question in a briefway ?" you will see they switch fromn one question to another very quickly. Pls try to keep track of the questions asked and answer them one by one. You are not supposed to stop unless they move to another question.
Political questions can be a bit tricky. Be frank but also wise and flexible. All of the more successful candidates told me they showed an ambiguous attitude when touched on politics. That?Ts wise: if you answer the questions like a communist ?" it doesn?Tt make sense (know what I mean?) but don?Tt talk like a blind liberalist ?" they will really think you will not fit into any regime in Vietnam. The only think you can show off is your sympathy for UK-Vietnam relationship. Pls read somehting about this exciting r?Tship for example in the areas of cultural, academic exchange and business.
4. Attires:
Dress yourself up the best you can. Be smart! I would suggest business suits for women and shirts-tied for men. You should present yourself as a very smart business person. Unfortunately Brits do care much about your look and their judgements sometimes base entirely on what they see and feel.

Mình xin đính chính lại là những thông tin này viết về reserve list của Chevening chứ ko phải waiting list. Mình cứ nghĩ waiting list chính là reserve list. Hóa ra ko phải. Sozzi.

Dạ mọi ng cho em hỏi có phải là Chevening sẽ closed hạn nộp hồ sơ vào tháng 11 hàng năm đúng ko ạ. Có điều em băn khoăn như các anh chị nói thì nếu đi làm công ty liên doanh ko được nằm trong top priority của Chevening ạ. Và xin các anh chị đã apply thành công Chevening cho em biết min điểm GPA và IE của anh chị là bao nhiêu ạ để em còn biết hướng phấn đấu ạ. Em xin chân thành cảm ơn ạ
