    The match is under way.
The game kicks off and we are under way with Scotland immediately on the attack.
2'' Already the Dutch look up for this one though, with Edgar Davids snapping at the heels whenever the ball comes into range.
3'' Ruud van Nistelrooij has just gone up with Gary Naysmith, who seems to be in a bit of trouble.
4'' Van Nistelrooij (Netherlands) is cautioned by the referee.
5'' Ferguson (Scotland) is shown a yellow card.
5'' Barry Ferguson and Van Nistelrooij have both gone in the book after a scuffle but there does not seem to be any bad feeling between the sides.
6'' There is an intimidating crowd here in Amsterdam, determined to give the home side all the support they can.
7'' Neither side has done too much attacking yet though, with both trying to get the measure of each other in a game that means so much.
8'' Rab Douglas is rushed into making an error, slicing the ball out of play near his own goal after a back-pass when under pressure. But Scotland hold their lines and recover.
    10'' Pressley (Scotland) is booked.
Stephen Pressley is cautioned for a very late foul on Davids.
11'' Andy van der Meyde did well there, crossing the ball but Rafael van der Vaart headed over from close range. That was the first real chance of the game.
13'' Van Nistelrooij just shot straight at the near post but Douglas was there. The Netherlands are strarting to take control here now.
    13'' ( 1 - 0 ) Sneijder (Netherlands) scores!
Ajax star Sneijder does brilliantly , picking the ball up just inside the Scotland half and shooting low past Douglas from 20 metres to give the Dutch the lead on the night and make the aggregate score 1-1.
14'' Ajax star Sneijder did brilliantly there, picking the ball up just inside the Scotland half and firing low past Douglas from 20 metres.
15'' So that makes the score level on aggregate and Scotland have some work to do if they are not going to be swept aside.
16'' The Netherlands are in total control and deserve their lead.
17'' Dickov (Scotland) is cautioned by the referee.
Paul Dickov was late there on Wilfred Bouma and that is the third yellow card for Scotland already.
18'' Dickov did well there on the edge of the box and then picked up a loose clearance from Davids so the Netherlands know they have to keep their wits about them.
21'' Gavin Rae wins the first corner of the evening for Scotland. This is where they could be dangerous.
21'' But Dickov commits a foul on Edwin van der Sar and the attack is wasted.
25'' Another foul there on Pressley and Scotland have a free kick.
25'' Lee Wilkie heads into the sidenetting from Darren Fletcher''s free kick. That was Scotland''s first real chance of the night.
28'' The game has evened out again now, but the Netherlands look content to take it easy and control the game patiently.
29'' Van Nistelrooij does well on the left and fires a shot against Douglas''s legs but is then punished for committing a foul on the Scotland goalkeeper.
    32'' ( 2 - 0 ) Ooijer (Netherlands) scores!
André Ooijer puts Holland into the lead on aggregate. Sneijder sweeps over the free kick from the left and Ooijer heads in from point-blank range.
35'' Sneijder goes close to putting the game out of Scotland''s reach. Van der Vaart lays it on to him after a good pass from Michael Reiziger but Sneijder shoots just wide with a fine effort.
    37'' ( 3 - 0 ) Van Nistelrooij (Netherlands) scores!
Ruud van Nistelrooij scores the home side''s third. Surely there is too much for Scotland to do now. Again Sneijder put in the free kick and the Manchester United FC forward was there to head in.
40'' Wilkie went close to pulling one back from Fletcher''s free kick, but van der Sar pushed the ball onto the post.
44'' Naysmith (Scotland) is shown a yellow card.
Gary Naysmith kicked out at Van Nistelrooij and Scotland may be a bit frustrated now.
45'' James McFadden was late on Davids there. Another case of frustration but it won''t get Scotland back into the game.
    The referee blows for half-time.
Half-time in Amsterdam and Dick Advocaat will be very happy with his team''s first-half performance. They are 45 minutes away from EURO 2004" while Scotland have to rue poor marking from two identical set pieces. Berti Vogts has his work cut out if his side are to turn this game around.
    The second half begins.
46'' Crawford (in) - Dickov (out) (Scotland)
46'' Ross (in) - Naysmith (out) (Scotland)
46'' Frank de Boer (in) - Ooijer (out) (Netherlands)
Advocaat makes a change, determined to keep things solid and ensure the Netherlands go to Portugal while Vogts has made two changes in a bid to turn the game around.
    47'' Davids (Netherlands) is booked.
Davids goes down in the box but the referee waves away appeals for a penalty. Wilkie got the ball and Davids is punished for simulation.
50'' Holland are retaining their shape and it is hard to see how Scotland will get back into this game.
    51'' ( 4 - 0 ) Van Nistelrooij (Netherlands) scores!
Van Nistelrooij lofts the ball over Douglas to make sure the Netherlands are going to Portugal. Van der Vaart played the ball to him and he kept his cool as Douglas rushed in.
53'' Van der Vaart goes close to adding to Scotland''s humbling, firing at the near post but the shot is just wide.
56'' Scotland need three goals to go through now and that is a tall order. The Tartan Army is still in full voice but that will not be enough for them.
58'' The Netherlands have given away a couple of free kicks but Scotland have not got the guile to break them down.
60'' The game has not got any real flow to it at the moment. Neither side is showing much cohesion but the Netherlands do not mind at this stage.
61'' Steven Crawford does well on the edge of the Netherlands box, but he slips and when he recovers, his shot is tame.
63'' Miller (in) - McCann (out) (Scotland)
63'' The Wolverhampton Wanderers FC forward Kenny Miller comes on but the Netherlands have been inspiring tonight.
64'' Davids did well there in his own area, turing away from trouble when he looked trapped and then starting an attack that has led to a corner.
    65'' ( 5 - 0 ) Frank de Boer (Netherlands) scores!
Frank de Boer heads in from the subsequent Sneijder corner and Davids can take a lot of satisfaction for his part in initiating the attack. Scotland have not been a patch on the side that won at the weekend. This is turning into a humiliation.
    67'' ( 6 - 0 ) Van Nistelrooij (Netherlands) scores!
Van Nistelrooij gets his hat-trick and it was so easy. Van der Meyde pulled the ball back and Manchester United''s leading scorer had all the time he needed to pick his spot.
69'' Seedorf (in) - Bouma (out) (Netherlands)
Another change for the Netherlands, as AC Milan''s Clarence Seedorf comes on.
70'' Van Nistelrooij goes close again.
72'' It could not have gone much worse for Scotland.
72'' McFadden pushes forward but tonight is not a good night to be a Scotland forward. The Netherlands defence has done very well and restricted the visitors'' opportunities to half chances.
76'' The Netherlands are stifling any Scotland attack and the Amsterdam ArenA is in full song.
77'' FC Barcelona forward Patrick Kluivert comes on for Van Nistelrooij, who has done his job for the evening and goes over to celebrate with his team mates.
78'' Kluivert (in) - Van Nistelrooij (out) (Netherlands)
80'' The Netherlands are content to wind down the clock now and there is nothing Scotland can do.
81'' Kluivert went close there. He curled the ball with his left foot and was just denied by Douglas. He will be determined to get on the scoresheet.
81'' Sneijder hits the bar with a curling shot that had Douglas beaten. The home side are enjoying themselves now.
84'' Sneijder hits a free-kick at the Scotland wall but he too has been impressive tonight.
85'' McFadden does well on the left and wins a corner but anything Scotland get now will be a consolation.
86'' Wilkie fouls Van der Sar from the corner and the Netherlands hold firm. They have been impressive tonight.
89'' Marc Overmars goes close to getting a seventh, Douglas blocking well after the Barcelona winger shot from the edge of the area.
90'' Van der Vaart shoots just over after good work from Clarence Seedorf.
90''+2'' The referee''s whistle brings the game to an end to confirm an emphatic win for the home side, and their progression to next summer''s finals in Portugal.
90''+2'' Scotland win a couple of corners. They deserve some cre*** for keeping going when all is lost.
    The final whistle is blown.
Scotland came into this game hoping to keep a clean sheet or nicking an away goal that could have been so vital. But the visitors have been humbled here by an outstanding Dutch display. After talk of discord in the camp, Dick Advocaat''s men have silenced anyone who questioned their team spirit in emphatic style.
The Netherlands are celebrating, the Amsterdam ArenA a sea of orange shirts and confetti now that their place in EURO 2004" is confirmed. They were just too good for Scotland tonight.
    IN HOLLAND WE TRUST !!

    Euro 2004: ''here we come''

    20 November 2003
AMSTERDAM â?" The Dutch national football team qualified for the 2004 European Championships on Wednesday night, sending the Scottish team packing with a sensational 6-0 victory at the Amsterdam Arena.
Needing to win by at least two goals after the disappointing 0-1 away loss in Scotland on Saturday 15 November, a young and rejuvenated Dutch team scored three goals in the first half as it took complete control of the last-***ch Euro 2004 qualification duel.
The team that lost to Scotland was the oldest in Dutch football history, newspaper De Telegraaf reported and coach Dick Advocaat opted for a youth policy on Wednesday night and 19-year-old mid-fielder Wesley Sneijder did not let him down.
He scored in the 14th minute and assisted Andre Ooijer (32nd minute) and Ruud van Nistelrooij (37th) to extend the lead out to three goals before the second half.
But the Dutch party did not end there, as Sneijder assisted again for the fifth as Frank de Boer headed the ball off the Scottish goalkeeper''s gloved hand into the back of the net. The goal was a good reward for the record international â?" who surprisingly started on the bench â?" and his loyal service in years gone past.
Van Nistelrooij â?" given the nod ahead of top Dutch international record goal scorer Patrick Kluivert, who also started on the sidelines as part Advocaat''s bold gamble â?" scored goals number four and six to end a remarkable evening for the Dutch team while 50,000 people looked on from the stands.
The Netherlands will now travel to the European Championships in Portugal, which will be held in June and July next year. The qualification comes after the Dutch miserably missed out on the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan and will go a long way towards silencing critics of an aging team full of stars once hailed as heroes.
But after recent bad press, the Orange players refused to talk with the media after the match and as way of explanation, Advocaat said in light of what had happened in recent days, the decision was entirely understandable.
Meanwhile, before the match started, thousands of Scottish fans streamed into the centre of Amsterdam, many wearing tra***ional kilts. The Scots gathered at Dam Square, in and around Nieuwmarkt and the Wallen area, while the Dutch fans assembled at Rembrandtplein.
Fans tried to hoist the Scottish flag at the National War Monument on Dam Square and a bagpipe player played the Scottish national anthem, Dutch associated press ANP reported.
Few problems were reported, but shortly before the match started, the doors of a Metro train were forced open at about 7pm by passengers trying to board the carriage and a group of fans took to walking on the track.
Amsterdam transport authority GVB cut the power to prevent any injuries and police were called in to clear the Waterlooplein station. Trains resumed operating 30 minutes later.
And thousands of Dutch fans â?" interspersed by a few Scottish fans â?" who did not have tickets for the match assembled in Amsterdam cafes and bars to watch it on TV and as the Orange lead was extended, both the disappointed Scottish and jubilant Dutch fans celebrated alike.
No resentment or bad feeling was noticed among the crowd. "We had tough luck, you had good luck. We are now for Holland," Scottish fan Barrie Neilson, of Glasgow, said.
Police had expected few problems before the start of the match and a spokeswoman said the championships qualification match went off without a hitch. "Perhaps it helps if men put on a skirt," she said.

    ADVOCAAT: LAY OFF BERTI''S KIDS
    Nov 20 2003
HOLLAND - Manager Dick Advocaat admitted that last night''s powerful performance was the one his team should have produced at Hampden on Saturday.
Advocaat, who won''t now be resigning his post in charge of the team, said: ``The difference was that we played this time.
``On Saturday we didn''t do what was asked but this time I made changes in personnel although not in tactics.
``I feel very sorry for Scotland because I had good times there, but the Scottish press shouldn''t ask too much. Today we saw the way the Dutch should have played last Saturday pressing from the start.
``In the first half on Saturday the players did not do what I asked them to do but this time they did and that made all the difference.
``It is difficult to say whether the changes I made were the reason for the win. But I must say thenewcomers in the team were excellent.
``Wesley Sneijder is able to move the game on very quickly and has a fantastic pass to the strikers.''''
Earlier in the week Advocaat had indicated he might not stay on as manager even if the Dutch qualified but he made it clear he would be picking the team in Portugal.
He said: ``I will be staying until the end.''''
Despite the victory the Dutch players refused to speak to the media following reports that some of them had partied on arrival back in Amsterdam on Saturday night.
Advocaat said: ``I can understand that. They all have families at home and had a lot of explaining to do there because of that.
``I can understand why they didn''t want to speak to the media who have treated them so badly.''''
