    BENITEZ''S BABES MARCH ON
    Steve Hunter 03 December 2004
Liverpool''s Academy graduates were on cloud nine at White Hart Lane when against all odds Rafael Benitez''s young side marched on to the semi-finals of the Carling Cup after a brilliant win over Tottenham''s first team.
Sure, captain Jerzy Dudek had to be at his best and made several magnificent saves and from the Pole in our goal to Florent Sinama-Pongolle in attack the team played for each other and boy did they work hard.

Despite Tottenham created good chances make no mistake Liverpool deserved this win and it now creates an interesting dilemma for Benitez in the semi-final. Does he continue with the young players for the game against Watford or will he mix it up by bringing back players like Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Milan Baros?

Benitez said: "We have time to think about that. We always say we take one game at a time and our next match is at Aston Villa. We have a lot of games to play before we think about picking a team for the semi-final.

"What I will say is I am very, very proud of what the players did at Tottenham. In the first half we didn''t play well but then in the second half and all through extra time we did much better and played with a lot of confidence. The lads were confident with the penalties as well and took them as well as the senior players could have done.

"We talked with the players before the match about Tottenham''s weaknesses and I knew we had a chance of winning. It was always possible for us."

Reports of the Academy''s decline in bringing young starlets through have been greatly exaggerated but as the Liverpool Chief Executive Rick Parry stated at the club''s AGM the only way you will know if young players are up to it at first team level is to give them a chance.

The manager deserves full cre*** for this. He is not undermining the competition, he is just giving youth a chance, and the young players deserve full cre*** for the way they have conducted themselves during the run to the semi-final.

The attitude and conduct of the senior professionals like Jerzy Dudek and Stephane Henchoz has been first class. Dudek has been given the captaincy for the Carling Cup run and he has found the form of his debut season at Anfield conceding just one goal in three games. Henchoz has been a tower of strength at the back and has been a great help to Zak Whitbread who has done extremely well.

At White Hart Lane many press and pun***s alike didn''t know who David Raven was when Benitez gave him his debut, but by the end of the game they knew who he was. Reserve regulars know all about the qualities Raven possesses and he didn''t disappoint.

The boyhood Liverpool fan swopped a potential career as a rock star to be a footballer and so far it looks to have been an inspired choice. Raven is captain of the England Under-20 team and has played a lot of games at centre half but Benitez sees his future as a right back.

The maturity he showed at Tottenham gave good hope for the future and the last ***ch goal saving tackle on Jermaine Defoe may not be bettered this season.

Benitez said: "I''ve been talking with Hugh (McAuley) about David Raven and his position. We talked about needing to see him play at a competitive level because he is a good player. He did very well."

Fellow England Under-20 international Mark Smyth, like Raven a big Liverpool fan, also made his debut and did well. He nearly got on the score sheet but for a good save from Paul Robinson.

Liverpool Reserve captain John Welsh came on in the second half and the England Under-21 international enhanced his reputation. He passed the ball superbly and was so unlucky not to score in extra-time with a brilliant effort that had Robinson beaten but curled inches wide.

Stephen Warnock had a great game at left back and set the tone for the victory with as committed a performance you will ever see. Benitez has been very impressed with Warnock and he is part of the first team squad this season on merit. Under the previous management Warnock would have been playing elsewhere.

Everywhere you looked at White Hart Lane on Wednesday there were players in red shirts showing that they can be a part of the club''s future. Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Darren Potter had another inspirational game and adds a touch of class with his passing and vision.

When Defoe had opened the scoring in extra-time many people probably thought that the game was over but Benitez didn''t think that.

Benitez said: "A game isn''t over until the end and I put Partridge on who did well for us. Even when Defoe scored I knew we would keep on fighting. The two penalties from Pongolle will do his confidence a lot of good.

"On Sunday it was Mellor who played well and scored and tonight it was Sinama. This is good for me as manager, because it gives me more possibilities in attack."

Florent Sinama-Pongolle ran his socks off up front and was the match winner with two brilliant pressured penalties. Previously he had missed one from the spot in a pre-season friendly at Aberdeen and scored his first goal in red colours with a penalty in the mini reserve derby against Everton.

When Frederic Kanoute had a moment of madness when he handed Liverpool a lifeline Sinama-Pongolle had the confidence to get the ball before anyone else and he sent Robinson the wrong way.

Penalty shoot-outs call for strong characters and Liverpool had them in abundance. Stephane Henchoz took the Redsfirst spot kick and like Jamie Carragher on previous occasions found the net with a superb and confident kick. Unfortunately on the statistics it will not count as Henchoz''s first official goal in a red shirt but it was an important one for Liverpool none-the-less.

Dudek was also a hero saving brilliantly off Kanoute and when Welsh gave the Reds the advantage it was left for Sinama-Pongolle to win the match for Liverpool.

The joyous scenes at the end of the game told its own story and it''s been a great week for Liverpool and good signs for the future.

Liverpool certainly will not underestimate Watford in the semi-final but the young lads will be hoping Rafa sticks with them as they are hungry for success. It would be wonderful if they were to go all the way to Cardiff and who would bet against it.
