School violence rising, students not given adequate counseling

Violence at Vietnamese schools has been on the rise, say educators who argue that a lack of on-campus counseling could be part of the problem.
Speaking at an international conference in Hanoi last week, Dr. Phan Mai Huong from the Institute of Psychology said school violence in Vietnam was getting more complicated and dangerous.
Campus violence is now more diverse than ever, Huong said, explaining that recent cases ranged from verbal abuse to murder. She said it was now common for high school students, and even those as young as 13-14 years old, to form gangs or team up with gangs outside of school to bully or control other students.
Hoang Ba Thinh â?" director of the Center for Population Studies and Social Work at the Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities, said recent research on violent behavior in schoolgirls showed that 64 percent of 200 surveyed students between 15-18 years old had been involved in fights.
The research found several recurring causes for the fights, including revenge for romantic disputes, hate for each other, and even no reason at all, according to Thinh.
He noted that over 50 percent of schoolgirls exhibiting violent behavior said their parents donâ?Tt show much care for them, while nearly 15 percent said they received no care from their parents.
Tellingly, nearly 85 percent of the schoolgirls who had been in fights said violence was employed in their families, Thinh said.
A 2007 student mental health survey conducted by the Hanoi Health Department with the University of Melbourne showed that nearly 20 percent of 21,960 surveyed students between 10-16 years old had mental health issues.

The threat does not help prevent pupils from fighting. In school bags, naughty pupils sometimes carry knives, swords and water guns.

Pupils do not fight during lesson time, they fight after school time, therefore, teachers sometimes do not hear about fights.

Most of the fights were found as the ?obattlê? of not only two individuals, in many cases, the ?~main actors?T in the fights were gangs and groups. There were a lot of reasons that led to fights, and sometimes, pupils fought for? nothing.

Recently, the HCM City Peoplê?Ts Court judged a case, in which two pupils in the same class stabbed each other. The pupil, who was the culprit in the case, was always bullied by the other. One day he hid a knife in his school bag and stabbed the other pupil. Before the court, when the victim was asked why he always bullied the friend, he said: ?obecause his face looks hateful?.

Not only schoolboys, but schoolgirls also fight each other. A video clip which has been recorded recently showed the fight between two groups of 5-6 schoolgirls, which took place after the school time, and on the street. In mid September 2007, pupils of Q.T school witnessed the dogfight between three schoolgirls and one schoolboy with bricks, stones and pipes.

Analysts said that one of the reasons behind the increasingly high school violence is that it is now so easy to buy the tools for fighting. It takes me VND40-50,000 and 30 minutes only to get a fighting instrument. The tool which is being used by most of pupils in fights is a knife, 40-50 cm long, used for paper cutting.

This type of knife is being sold everywhere on many streets of Hanoi. They are made by the trade villages in Hanoi or imported from China. Many instruments for fighting have been imported from China through border gates. However, as they are expensive, pupils like using simple and cheaper ones. Bricks, stone, glasses and bottles all can become the instruments of violence in the hands of naughty pupils.

Analysts have also pointed out that the indifference of people is also the main reason behind the increased violence at schools. The fights outside schools were not reported to school rectors, and the stories were only transmitted among pupils.

The video clip of fighting schoolgirls clearly showed the indifference of people, who stood around at that time. No one intended to interfere the fights, they just kept the wait-and-see attitude.

- Thay vào đó, nên tập trung vào 1 hoặc 2 điểm, phân tích đào sâu. Tránh dàn trải. Tránh nói lại ý nhóm trước.
- Diễn thuyết cần ngắn gọn, cô đọng. Qúa dài người nghe sẽ ko còn chú ý.
3. Thảo luận nhóm 45.
- Nhóm nào cũng hòm hòm 6 chú, chẳng nhẽ ko cho nổi mỗi chú 7 phút?
