Hôm qua tớ có đi tham gia câu lạc bộ tiếng anh chuyên ngành ở ký túc xá bách khoa. tớ thấy mọi người tham gia rất đông, không khí thực sự sôi động. Các hoạt động đố vui tiếng anh, thảo luận theo chủ đề, giao lưu... thực sự rất lý thú và bổ ích.
Tớ cám ơn những bạn đã tổ chức buổi sinh hoạt này và chúc cho câu lạc bộ ngày lớn mạnh, giúp ích được nhiều cho những ai có quan tâm đến lĩnh vực môi trường.

Trước tiên, gửi lời chúc mừng các bạn đã tổ chức buổi lễ ra mắt thành công tốt đẹp. Các bạn hỗ trợ thành viên trong CLB học tập, chia xẻ kinh nghiệm mà, không bổ bề dọc cũng bổ bề ngang đấy.
Tớ đã biết có rất nhiều bạn khi tìm kiếm tài liệu rất bị trở ngại do không có khả năng tiếng Anh. Điều này rất đáng tiếc, vì nguồn tài liệu bằng tiếng Anh chắc chắn sẽ rất nhiều, bổ ích, luôn được cập nhật. Nên trên lý thuyết, tớ hoan nghênh các cậu, còn phương thức tổ chức mới là điều tiên quyết.
Tớ có dịp gặp một số bạn gặp khó khăn khi học môn tiếng Anh chuyên ngành. Bài tập các bạn làm là dịch 1 chương sách cho thầy/cô. Vừa cho học trò đọc sách, vừa có được có sách dịch luôn Và các bạn ấy chia xẻ rằng chưa thấy hứng thú với môn học này.
Nhiều lúc tớ nghĩ, nếu bài tập được xoay chuyển nhiều hơn, ý nghĩa hơn. VD: cho các bạn đọc các bản tin Môi trường, bài báo cáo khoa học MTr, rồi tập tóm tắt, lấy ý chính, trả lời câu hỏi, trắc nghịêm ... (giống như thi reading của IELTS đấy). Liệu như vậy có cải thiện được không ?!?!?!
Sau đây là 2 bài tớ mạn phép trích từ EandM, bài trích dẫn từ anh thiennhien. Trong EandM, có rất nhiều bài viết trao đổi, bài giới thiệu chia xẻ thông tin đa số bằng tiếng Anh, các bạn có thể sử dụng cho CLB đấy (quảng cáo giúp mod bên ấy ). Tớ sẽ hỏi ý kiến bác mod để trích dẫn các bài tiếng Anh trong EandM sang đây cho các bạn khác quan tâm tham khảo.

Worldwatch Projects Catastrophe Will Be Most Costly Weather-Related Disaster in History
Washington, D.C. ?" The overwhelming human and financial impacts of Hurricane Katrina are powerful evidence that political and economic decisions made in the United States and other countries have failed to account for our dependence on a healthy resource base, according to an assessment released today by the Worldwatch Institute.
Alteration of the Mississippi River and the destruction of wetlands at its mouth have left the area around New Orleans abnormally vulnerable to the forces of nature. According to many scientists, the early results of global warming?"90 degree Fahrenheit water temperatures in the Gulf and rising sea levels?"may have exacerbated the destructive power of Katrina.
?oThe catastrophe now unfolding along the U.S. Gulf Coast is a wake-up call for decision makers around the globe,? says Worldwatch President Christopher Flavin. ?oIf the world continues on its current course?"massively altering the natural world and further increasing fossil fuel consumption?"future generations may face a chain of disasters that make Katrina-scale catastrophes a common feature of life in the 21st century.?
?oThe appalling images from New Orleans demonstrate that the world?Ts richest country is not immune from the need to respect natural systems and to invest in their protection,? continued Flavin. "This will likely be the most expensive weather-related disaster the world has ever faced."
According to an assessment by Worldwatch researchers, the long-term lessons of Katrina include:
Maintaining the integrity of natural ecosystems should be a priority: Indiscriminate economic development and ecologically destructive policies have left many communities more vulnerable to disasters than they realize. This, together with rapid population growth in vulnerable areas, has contributed to worldwide economic losses from weather-related catastrophes totaling $567 billion over the last 10 years, exceeding the combined losses from 1950 through 1989. Losses in 2004 exceeded $100 billion for the second time ever, and a new record will almost certainly be set this year once Katrina?Ts damages are totaled.
Short-term thinking is a dangerous approach to policy: During the past few years, the U.S government has diverted funding from disaster preparedness to help finance the Iraq War, and has reduced protections for wetlands in order to spur economic development. Both decisions are now exacting costs that far exceed the money saved. Natural ecosystems such as wetlands and forests are often more valuable when left intact so as to protect communities from floods, landslides, drought, and other natural occurrences. Failure to protect ecosystems contributed to the massive loss of life when the tsunamis swept across the Indian Ocean last year and when Hurricane Mitch killed 10,000 people in Central America in 1998.
The links between climate change and weather-related catastrophes need to be addressed by decision makers: Although no specific storm can be definitively link to climate change, scientists agree that warm water is the fuel that increases the intensity of such storms and that tropical seas have increased in temperature by up to 2 degrees Fahrenheit over the past century. (Katrina transformed rapidly from a Category 1 to a Category 5 hurricane when it passed from the Atlantic Ocean to the much warmer Gulf of Mexico.) In the next few decades, water temperatures and sea levels will continue to rise, greatly increasing the vulnerability of many communities. Global warming and its anticipated effects on the hydrological cycle will make some areas more vulnerable as storms, floods, and droughts increase in frequency and intensity.
There is an urgent need to diversify energy supplies: The national and global economic impact of Hurricane Katrina is growing by the day, with consumers around the world now paying significantly more for energy than they were a week ago. Decades of failure to invest in new energy options has left the world dependent on oil and natural gas that are concentrated in some of the world?Ts most vulnerable regions?"the U.S. Gulf Coast, the Persian Gulf, and the Niger Delta in Africa. Biofuels and other renewable resources now represent viable alternatives to fossil fuels, which are not only vulnerable to natural disasters but could have a big impact on the severity of future disasters.

Waste Management Indicators to Measure Quality of Good Urban Governance
Waste is a particularly good reflection of the dynamic nature of cities. The quantity and nature of waste generated in a particular location varies daily and seasonally. It can also be possible to predict coming economic changes in a city through careful analysis of municipal wastes. However, because of the dynamic nature of waste, care must be taken to ensure data is relevant and accurate. Good and consistent working definitions of different types of wastes are critical factors in measuring and comparing performance.
Municipal waste can be defined as those wastes generated from households and those wastes from institutional, commercial and industrial establishments similar in nature to household wastes.
Information in support of waste management indicators can be collected by simple visual observation, from first hand community experiences and/or from more detailed field surveys
Primary Indicators
Quantity of municipal waste (per capita, per household and/or in relation to GDP)
Percentage of the urban population and percentage of low-income communities provided with regular waste collection services
Percentage of waste disposed with effective control on health, safety and environmental impact
Percentage of waste recycled and recovered
Secondary Indicators
Number of government agencies (at each level) with responsibility for waste management
Total cost (or cost per tonne) of waste management services
Percentage of total service costs recovered from generators of waste
Percentage of waste management services carried out under defined service agreements
Percentage of waste management services let to the private sector meeting criteria of transparency, accountability and competition
Percentage of clinical and hazardous wastes treated to acceptable standards
Number of successful enforcement actions against waste management offenders
Degree of public/customer satisfaction
Number of awareness raising events and percentage of population reached

Các bạn thấy đấy, CLB TALKING GREEN đã được thành lập vào ngày 25/12/2005, buổi lễ ra mắt đã rất thành công và để lại ấn tượng tốt cho người tham dự, đây cũng là buổi sinh hoạt đầu tiên của CLB. Vào ngày 08/01/2006, CLB TALKING GREEN sinh hoạt buổi thứ hai, đã có nhiều ý kiến phản hồi tích cực từ phía những người tham gia hôm đó, đặc biệt là trong phần luyện phát âm (The Pronunciation Section) với cách tiếp cận hoàn toàn mới và hwá hẹn sẽ mang lại hiệu quả cao. Đây có thể nói là một sự động viên khích lệ rất lớn cho Ban điều hành CLB.
