Dear all friends, I hope you had a good morning because it''''s pretty late to say so now.
I hope today won''''t be as hot as yesterday so that we''''ll feel better surfing the net.
Somethng about the question of Vietnam economy yesterday, I think our economy is doing well and i believe that it''''ll be better in the future. We just have to be more confident to open ourselves to receive new professional instructions from other countries so that we''''ll be able to form our Vietnamese style economy.
And something for Huy, I thought about your question last night, when I couldn''''t sleep and I think that''''s a whale, right? Am I a good student?About your good intention to form a speaking club, I''''m so sorry but I think I can''''t because I''''m living and working in HCMC and I guess most members here are living in Ha Noi, we''''re so distant. But just don''''t worry, if there''''s a chance I visit Ha Noi, I would say to all of you that I''''m gladly to meet and talk with you, diretly. Please forgive me.
OK, I won''''t let you guys waiting anymore. The discussion for today related to Maths. As we know, Vietnamese students are among the most intelligent students in Maths of the world. So I hope this question will hotten our club with many many excited ideas, many ways of solving the problem. The question below is pretty long, please read it carefully:
There is a hotel called Chocolate hotel which offers you chocolate pieces in every room depended on the room number. There are 5 members of club PRO get together in Chocolate hotel for a meeting: Huy, Akira, Bella, nhinanh and gaming. Akira is so hurried that he entered room 1 and got only 1 piece of chocolate. Bella entered room 2 and got 5 pieces of chocolate, (just like the firue below). Similarly, gaming got 13 pieces in room 3 and nhinanh got 25 pieces in room 4. Huy is so smart that he quickly entered room 99. When he opened the door he shouted: Oh my God!The question is:
Please tell me how many pieces of chocolate in room 99?
Note: The manager allow customers to take all pieces of chocolate in their rooms.

Hi Huy, who didn''t care about your suggestion? I mean I''m very concerned about it and may be some members in this club are also interesting in talking with a native-speaker, right? I think some of us just want to keep silent because we''re Vietnamese.
I remember once talking with a friend in my workplace. I told her that I saw her contact with many foreigners but why she talked so rarely? I asked her if she understood what they said. She surprised me with her deep knowledge in English but the reason made her keep silent was because she''s so shy( she said so).
She just listens English and does her job but does not say it out in English. Since then I realized that the weakness of some Vietnamese students related to their frightening of expressing themselves in Western style, not their language ability only and I changed my attitude toward them. I don''t think that we have to speak everything out as the Western people and their culture but when we speak something out, it''s understandable. That''s the most important purpose of any language, right?
Anyway, that''s the situation for some working people. With students, i always think that we should speak out everything that we can and want to though it''s wrong or right, just to practice English. I don''t want you guys to lose the chance offered by Huy to speak with a Canadian so I also contacted EFO, the English for Older club in Ha Noi and if possible, I hope Huy will generously introduce this native speaker fellow to this club. In fact, members in club PRO who wanted to have a speaking opportunity can join in this club ,too. I''m sure you guys will have very fun time gathering together.
And one more thing, thanks Huy for your big support and the answer about Maths. i wasn''t wrong when thinking that Vietnamese students are among the most intelligent in maths of the world. So you guys, do we have some more ways to solve this problem? Surely the vote will reach each of you.
Enjoy studying and thanks for reading.

i''''ll call the number of pieces of chocolate in each room An, and the number of room Bn. so we have a formula
    A1= 1
    An= An-1 + 4*Bn-1
    ---> A99 = A98 + 4*98
i think this formula is right. but i cant think more about the general formula. i lost all my knowledge about high-school math ! so ashamed !

hi cham i got your point . but once u learn a language , that means ur also learning another culture , that requires the learners to get used to its habits & customs . look at the japanese-learners! they r much influenced by the jap culture .
for english lang , as far as i''m concerned , spoken eng is the most important . look at the indians , the phils ...., they all speak eng well , althought only a small percentage works with written english . we r almost contrary....
2 be honest , i rarely do the chat-chit ol . thats so slow and i dont wanna spend hours typing . so do the western . and how can i introduce ''em to the topic if the members keep speakin'' viet . btw , my ym is groovyfox3001 that ''s already in yr buddy-list
i better go out for a midnite walk . thanks
    cheers

As being said, my votes have been sent to Bella, Akira and nhinanh as small gifts to encourage their subjective efforts. Thank you so much for sharing with us your knowledge.
In fact, I''d like to have some further adding to their answers just to share with you my experience as well because such types of questions are for discussion. There''s not only 1 correct answer but we can expand our knowledge base on what we know.
Question 1: to you, what is a real defference between skimming and scanning when you''''re reading?
    Answered by Bella09:
--> Skimming means reading very quickly. It involves selective reading of the most important parts of the text in order to find out how the text is organised and get a general idea of what the text is about.
The way in which a text is organised gives us a clue as to what is the most important part to read.
--> Scanning means moving your eyes over a text very quickly in order to find something specific and easily recognisable. When scanning you are looking for particular information (e.g.names, places, dates, specific phrases).
Chambres'' adding: i would like to share with you some experiences.
Scanning - useful to do first, before you read more deeply, as it encourages you to take a systematic approach to reading critically.
Skimming - when you''re looking for particular things within a text, or trying to find out whether a text will be useful.
Questions 2:How to realize the difference between metaphor and synecdoche?

Answered by nhinanh05: I''ve read this two-page forum, and I dindn''t find the answer to the first question: what''''s the difference between metaphor and synecdoche?
So let me try to do that:
    - Metaphor usually consists of 2 parts that are called respectively the compared one (1))and the one that we use to compare (2), or academically the tenor and the vehicule. And normally they are linked by the preposition "of" or they are just juxtaposed.
EX: "That throws some light on the question." Throwing light is a metaphor because there is no actual light.
    - Meanwhile synecdoche just comprises 1 part. Furthermore, this part is one aspect of something and it is used to represent the whole thing, and vice versa we use the whole thing to represent one aspect.
EX: His parents bought him a new set of wheels (car
Use your head [brain] to figure it out."
I like this forum very much, so I have a proposal. To be honest, when i read this forum, I came up with the idea for enhancing not only writing skills but also speaking ones. Why don''''t you gather together to find out a new method to reach the said target. For instance, we can create a speaking club just here in HANOI and have a real english-speaking club atmosphere filled with interactions.
I am now a student, and in my humble opinion, the summer 2-month vacation will be meaningful if we can do something useful to "upgrade our language abilities.
Chambres'' adding: I would like to share some theoretical knowledge so that we can easily clarify the difference.
Metaphor: a figure of speech comparing things that are basically unalike to make the reader see them as similar in some way; metaphor is Greek for "transfer" (meta means "across," and phor/pher means "carry")
stated (direct) metaphor: stated directly (The thief was a fox. She is a doll.); metaphors may follow linking verbs such as become or remain (The boy remained a rock for his family during the tragedy. The offensive line became an effective wall to run behind during the game.)
implied metaphor: the connection between two things is suggested rather than stated (He strutted across the room.)
extended metaphor: a comparison developed in detail, i.e., throughout an entire poem
Synecdoche: the use of part of a thing to stand for the whole, or vice-versa
Give me a hand with this, please.
I got pulled over by the law.
Enjoy studying & thanks for reading.

I''m so busy this week pals, i will try to be more active in coming days.
As Cham said, this club is for English learners who get professional qualified English skill. I must admit I''m not anyway close to the so-call ''professional'', I learn English *****pport my work.. and to watch Friends series
So much talks, here''s my answer for the Chocolate Hotel problem , we have 19405 pieces of chocolate in room 99. Huy must have hundreds of girlfriends to spend all that chocolate on Valentine!
For those who curious about how I find that number. I just noticed the square that bounds all the pieces. The number of pieces is size of the square minus size of 4 corners.
The sides'' length of that square is room number multiple by 2 and then minus 1: N*2-1 (N is the room number). So we''ve got the size of the square: (N*2-1)*(N*2-1).
    Each corner has size: 1+2+3+...+(N-1) = N*(N-1)/2
    Hence the formula is: (N*2-1)*(N*2-1) - 4*N(N-1)/2 = 2*N*N-2*N+1
You can use it to calculate for room 99.
Good puzzle Cham, so sad that I cant find any question for our club, I will try!
So late, I have to take an exam early tomorrow morning! god saves me!

Good afternoon everyone, hope you had a good day. I''m off today due to the eclectricity, once again.
Thanks for your support, gaming, don''t worry about the word "professional". It means that the questions here are related to different professions, not because they are hight quality ones. Once again I repeat that this club weclomes everyone, not just the excellent ones, because everyone learn from each other. Thanks for your Maths asnwer, your time and good luck with your exam.
OK, let''s return to our discussion for today. I realized that you guys are pretty interested in Maths just like what they called Vietnamese students, the Maths genius. So, let''s try one more Maths challenge if you''re still attracted to this aspect. I hope you will find out more scientific and basic rules for your personal professions based on Maths which you can apply into your real life development. Below is the challenge for today:
By plane geometry, prove that the quadrilateral formed by joining the centers of fours squares theirs sides are sides of a given parallogram is a square.
