Not so tough to understand it.Let's me try to explain my thinking about some verses of the song.
The underlying meaning of this song probably is a warning about frivoulous relationship bt boys and girls and all the prejudice against women. A song to call for women liberation i guess

HE THINKS HE'LL KEEP HER (But HE CAN"T)
    Mary Chapin Carpenter
She makes his coffee, she makes his bed
She does the laundry, she keeps him fed
When she was twenty-one she wore her mother's lace--> She seemed to be mature early
She said forever with a smile upon her face
She does the carpool, she PTA's---> Parent Teacher Association---> this girl is so hectic with her life
Doctors and dentists, she drives all day---> Doctors for her prenancy? Dentists for her children?
When she was twenty-nine she delivered number three---> 3 children when she was 29.
And every christmas card showed a perfect family----> Ironic huh, a family with a bunch of kids.
Everything runs right on time, years of practice and design
---> The SOB knows how to drag this miserable girl along
Spit and polish till it shines, he thinks he'll keep her
-->Nice expression, just imagine about shoe polising. This verse implies that their relationship is on and off all the time.
Everything is so benign, safest place you'll ever find
--->This poor girl is not determined about ending the relationship yet. After all women usually consider their partners as their greatest support.
God forbid you'd change your mind, he thinks he'll keep her
--->See, she can't get off that mindset. "God" here stands for the old-fashioned ideologies that have been established in the society for a long time.
She packs his suitcase, she sits and waits
With no expression upon her face
When she was thirty-six she met him at the door
She said, I'm sorry, I don't love you anymore
---->Brave move, yeah dumb him my girl
    [CHORUS]
For fifteen years she had a job and not one raise in pay
Now she's in the typing pool at minimum wage
----------> Look how she suffered in her life and the society seemed not treat her fairly.
Everything runs right on time, years of practice and design
Spit and polish till it shines, he thinks he'll keep her
Everything is so benign, safest place you'll ever find
At least until you change your mind, he thinks he'll keep her ....

----Mama mia Here I go again----
    [/quote]

It's not wealth one asks for, but just enough to preserve one's dignity, to work unhampered,to be generous, to be independent

Very very cool johntrung You explained a lot of things that I didn't know . How could you know the meaning lying between lines ?
Well, not because she wants to, but because her lazy lovely husband doesn't want to. It sounds like women in early days, when men are to do work, earn money and be a pillar in the family, while it is the responsibility of women to be in charge of all housework and stuff that relates to their children.
How on earth am I so dumb ? It seemed like she became a postwoman when she was 29, as the first time I listened to the lyrics. (Hence she delivered letters, cards and paper stuff )
    Perfect
Hmm, I reckon this implies that she'd rather have her own job, even with a minimum wage, and be as free as bird, than tie herself in the invisible prison...

Anyway, wanna give a go in translation, people ?

    The 3rd test result :
    Congratulation JOHNTRUNG ! You're the winner .
( Both Johntrung and NNHN had good translations . It's so difficult for us to choose the winner. At last, we choose Johntrung 'cause the way he use vocabulary is a little bit better.)
    -----------
The industrial sectors must work to retain the lion's share of the national's investment capital to hasten the economic growth, Minister of Planning and Investment Ministry Tran Xuan Gia said. The investment should focus on the development of the industry on plains and in midland areas . The industrial enterprises take 10% of the state budget and 45% of the total national investment . These proportion must be guarded to spur development.

( Translation with Comment and Feeling Expression if possible )
    TIẾNG THU
    Em không nghe mùa thu
    Dưới trăng mờ thổn thức
    Em không nghe rạo rực
    Hình ảnh kẻ chinh phu
    Trong lòng người cô phụ?
    Em không nghe rừng thu
    Lá thu kêu xào xạc
    Con nai vàng ngơ ngác
    Đạp trên lá vàng khô

    Fall Feeling
    I don?Tt feel the fall
    Under a dim sobbing moon
    I don?Tt feel being moved
    With an image of warriors
    In a lonely woman?Ts heart
    I don?Tt feel fall jungle
    Although fluttering leaves are rustling
    As a little bewildered deer
    Stepping onto the dry leaves
I remember I had heard the author's name several times years ago. Hoverever, this is the first time I read this poem, and it's given me a great emotion of fall. In fact, fall is coming. So I really enjoyed reading it. Thank Di for posting this wonderful poem.
