The mechanical engineering department offers one MEng/MSc studentships by way of full time research in the area of biomedical engineering with the potential of continuing to PhD level. The successful candidate will be joining an already established research team based in the Galway Medical Technology Centre (GMedTech) on the main GMIT campus. The priority of this research is the development of a Surgery Evaluation Tool for Intracranial Aneurysms (SETIA). It is estimated that between 1.5 to 6% of the general population have or will develop an intracranial aneurysm. At present, intracranial aneurysms are treated either by an invasive surgical clipping or by a minimally invasive endovascular procedure. For a specific aneurysm case, clinicians have little or no guidance in selecting the required treatment method.
The main aim of this research is to further develop a testing facility capable of replicating physiological type flows in the cerebral vascular system (circle of Willis) with the inclusion of intracranial aneurysms based on medical images obtained from local hospitals. This system will help address clinician?Ts needs on the optimum intervention time and preferred surgical procedure for a given patient.

Note: In the recently standardized European System of higher education (Bologna process), a master''s degree corresponds to a one- or two-year postgraduate program (60 to 120 ECTS cre***s) undertaken after at least three years of undergraduate studies. It provides higher qualification for employment or prepares for doctoral studies. In general, though, the structure and duration of a program of study leading to a master''s degree will differ by country and by university. In France, the master degree corresponds to a two-year program. The Computational Biology program requests that the first year (or equivalent) is completed in your home institution.
