    Hi Mieumieu,
My fault . I should not digress from your topic . Here is what I''d say if a foreigner asked me :
    - Vietnameses are a hardworking people. We value academia over practical knowledge (but that is changing) . Family nucleus is the core of all activities .
I have tons of other values about Vietnamese but will let other forumers to voice theirs.

    Bro Hung,
You are always a gentlement in full senses of this word. How proud it is if that ''''s a typical Vietnamese character as well.
For your three comments about Vietnamese people, I just partly argree. Before I explain , let me make one point clear first. In my opinion, to describe about Vietnamese people and culture is to indentify what make Vietnamese Vietnamese. In other words, what make us different from other races, people and countries such as Chinese, Japanese, and Westerners.
In that sense, even I agree with you that ''''''''Vietnamese is hardworking, evaluated form over content and family system values'''''''' those points do not make Vietnamese Vietnamese. Chinese or Japanese (or most of East Asia) in those aspects are worth to mention than us.
You can check what I have said by considering their education systems and attitudes of their people to the system. Student in those countries must word very hard (overloaded ,espectially for children) because they must meet the superficial requirements of their societies in terms of certificate, or educated-performance, and family ''''s face.

    Buddy TaoLao,
Well, if all young Viet are like you , i.e. have breadth, depth, caring and intelligent , then no foreigner would ponder what Viet are . We''ll be a wealthy, humane and powerful country .
Anyway, most South Asian countries cherish the same value : education and family centric . But, we had been putting too much emphasis on academia like literature for too long, neglecting science and technology , thus we are lagging behind other neighboring countries . Well, we are changing and catching up ... thanks to young generation like you.
So, be the forefront force and take our country to catch up and get ahead with those Asian tiger nations.
Man, I sound like those bureaucrats .... Bad, bad me
I start to digress again - My apology to the owner of this thread , Ms Mieumieu .

    Bro Hung,
I think we should not complement each other any more. Otherwise, one more bad character of Vietnamese is included.
    To all,
Vietnamese people and culture are issues that I ponder and study for years. As a oversea Vietnamese frequently contact to foreigners , at least once you are asked '' how about Vietnamese'' or more directly '' what ''s identifies of Vietnamese''. And for me, my anwser is changed from time to time (from bad to worse). For the first time, it ''s optimistic one ''They are hardworking, friendly, good fighters, intelligent, beautiful ladies'' .
But the more I meet and understand other countries people the more I remove good characters of Vietnamese people in my answer. I found out that Chinese people word harder than us (or at least we are not hardworking than most of the countries I know, you can check by comparing the number of holidays in a working year of other countries to those of our countries). Indonesian are more friendly than us. For good at fighting, is there anything good to be proud of? No. Or are we intelligent? Not really. Or the last point, Vietnamese girls are very beautiful? Sadly, my answer once again is negative ( I must confess that the more I meet other countries ''s girls the more I do not believe in that point).
You can list more good characters of Vietnamese. But I believe that if you objectively observe and evaluate those comments(compare to other countries) , just a few points can stand.

''To emphasize on literature and neglect science and technology for long'' is your very sharp comment on Vietnamese character, Bro Hung. However, I believe that is a general character of people in the countries which have been affected by Confucianism from China ( such as Korea, Vietnam, Japan). That was one of main reasons pulling those countries back. Now the situation is different. We can conclude that all of them waked up and reconized when they contacted to Western countries : China from Opium War, Japan from Minh Trị dynasty. They have made a ''great leap'''' jump. Until now, no country in this world dares to look down them (Japan is second biggest economy, GDP of China climb up to 1000 bilion , will be a near future superpower ).
We Vietnamese also early waked up. However, we have continued sleeping after that. Even though all we have known the situation already what could we do? That ''s a big question for contemporary Vietnamese generation.
Let me return to literature point above. Every Vietnamese loves literature that makes us more romantic, richer in culture life. Generally, that ''s good point.
However, people overemphasize the role of literature. Everybody makes poems, it ''s almost everywhere. It is so common that sombody made a joke ''Vietnam ''s a superpower in producing poems''. But we must remember that poetry ''s just for entertainment (not in avant-garde sense), not for food and anything else.
There seem a paradox. We all love literature (everybody can make a poem and write), but never win such Nobel prize while our neighbors got that: Japan with A personal matter (1994), China by Cao Hành Kiện (2001) with Soul Mountain (Linh Sơn), India by Tagor (1914). As a matter of fact, that target ''s out of our reach in near future (waiting for you).
