Toshihiko Koga was born in Kurume City,Fukuoka Prefecture and his family moved to Kita Moyasumachi,Saga Prefecture in his elementary days.
Toshihiko and his elder brother,Motohiro, began Judou in his boyhood under their father who ran a steel mill.
Tosu jyudo club to which they belonged took part in all national judo championship.
In the championship, Tosu jyudo club won the championship with Motohiro appearing as the last fighter and Toshihiko as the first fighter.
Motohiko was a strong and brilliant existence for Toshihiko and younger brother couldn''t beat older brother in all phases.
Toshihiko exercised Judo everyday so that he could catch up his brother and surpass him.
In autumn 1985, the final match of all national Judo championship started.
The spectators viewed the match between Motohiro Koga and Toshihiko Koga with holding their breath.
Motohiro Koga recalled the final match then with his brother as follows.
"Some minute passed. We moved from standing work to ground work with falling down to the tatami mat tangling each other.
My brother looked filled with anger and my joint was strangled in the next moment.
I tried to escape from the position with all my strength.
I could hear the sound of beating of Toshihiko who tried to tighten my joint desperately.
The voice of judge "Ippon" was heard slightly.
I was defeatd.
At that night, I cried. I couldn''t tell whether I felt sad or pleasure then.
All I could tell was that Toshihiko surpassed me and that there was nothing for me to teach him.
Toshihiko Koga was defeated at the world Judo championship meet held in both Essen and Seoul Olympic in 1988.
However,he could eventually won a championship in the the world Judo Championship Meet held in Belgrade.
In 1992, he went to Barcelona with the determination of wiping out the blemish defeat in Seoul Olympic four years before.
However, soon after his arrival to Barcelona, Koga was injured on his left leg during the exercise with his junior fellow, Hidehiko Yoshida.
To be precise, it was the damage of ligament inside of left leg.
The injure was unexpectedly serious.
At this time,the stuffs of the coach supposed that the victory of Koga would be impossible.
Yasuhiro Yama****a who had experienced of fighting final match with an injury on his leg at Los Angeles Olympic supposed that the match wouldn''t be held judging from the con***ion of Koga''s injury.
Because Koga couldn''t even walk straight on the previous day of the match.
Koga went to match after having 6 shots injected on his knee for easing the pain just before the match.
